AI Summary
This report presents a literature review for a major individual project (ITNET312A) focused on developing a Bluetooth-controlled digital name board. The project utilizes an Arduino microcontroller, 8x8 LED dot matrix displays with the MAX7219, and a HC-06 Bluetooth module, controlled by an Android application developed using Thunkable.com. The review examines existing literature on LED displays, wireless communication technologies, and mobile app development, including research on GSM-based LED displays, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth E-Notice boards, and user-friendly mobile app design. The report also explores future modifications, such as multi-user authorization and the display of date and time. References to relevant research papers and conference proceedings are included to support the project's design and implementation. The project aims to provide a wireless and easily updatable display solution, particularly for educational and manufacturing environments.

Introduction
In our day-to-day life we have seen many digital sign boards and these digital LED displays are commonly
visible as advertising strategies, information display mechanism in public places, safety instruction
mechanisms, commercial aspect to display data and in certain sectors of medicine and science. In this project
I mainly focus on the information display mechanism in educational institutes and production floors in
manufacturing industry. The most commonly used digital sign boards are the wired LED displays and the pre-
programmed memory chip installed LED displays. It has a major disadvantage when it comes to changing the
display program.
Therefore, I proposed a wireless mechanism for change the data that could be displayed on the sign board. It
is a Bluetooth controlled LED sign board display based on Arduino micro controller using set of 8X8 LED dot
matrix display with MAX7219 microcontroller. For the Bluetooth feature in this project, I’ve used a PC-06
Bluetooth module and android Bluetooth application that gives the display board accessibly through any digital
device that has Bluetooth facility developed through the Thunkable.com online mobile application
development website. It makes the switching process from several devices very fast and accurately.
Literature review
A considerable amount of theories and experimental researches are published on LED displays with wireless
Communication. As per the International Journal of Computer Applications (0975 – 8887) on Design and
Development of GSM based Multiple LED Display Boards in June 2013 has suggested a solution to overcome
the drawbacks of previous text message moving display showcases using wired entries via computers,
keyboard or remote-control entry (small distance).
The solution was presented as a connection of both wireless technology with LED Display Boards which are
formalized in terms of design and integration of the hardware and software with AT89S52 microcontroller,
GSM module, LCD, moving LED display. (Kamboj, R. et. al 2013)
“WIRELESS NOTICE BOARD Our Real-Time Solution” presented at the National Conference on Recent
Trends in Engineering & Technology, May13-14 (2011) is also based on the GSM technology. (Dalwadi, D.
C et. al 2011)

According to the solution presented in the conference, in this Device, received message is transfer into
Microcontroller. The display of the message on LCD screen will be done after the authentication. Further it
is capable of real-time announcements by interfacing voice data recording IC with Microcontroller. (Dalwadi,
D. C et. al 2011)
A SMS driven automatic display board using serial to parallel communication from WIFI/Bluetooth module
to a microcontroller and from the micro controller to matrix display is described in the research paper
“Wireless E-Notice Board Using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Technology” Published in the Journal of Network
Communications and Emerging Technologies (JNCET) Volume 6, Issue 4, April (2016).
To gain a clear picture on developing user friendly mobile app literature in the relevant area was referred. In
the research paper of “Retrieving and analyzing mobile apps feature requests from online reviews” by Jacob
C. and Harrison R highlights the importance of the direct app user feedback analysis to improve the app to
be user friendly and efficient. MARA (Mobile App Review Analyzer) is the analyzer tool described in this
publication. (Iacob, C et. al 2013)
The challenges of usability in the mobile context, proposed definitions along with the methods for evaluation
are examines according to the state of the art of mobile application usability evaluation Published in 2012
25th IEEE Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE).

To identify and understand app developing platform and their features to select the best option for this
specific project different available options were taken to notice.
The conference paper on “Mobile development tools and cross-platform solutions” Smutný, P by deals with
available frameworks, cross-platform solutions, mobile development tools, summary of mechanical
engineering apps and development of mobile dictionary of the English-Czech automatic control terms.
(Smutný, P 2012)
Future Modification
✓ Multiple users are authorized to update notices on the electronic display boardremotely
✓ Thus, save time, energy and finally environment.
✓ Prevents unauthorized access to the display board.
✓8*8 LCD module can be replaced by other LCDs which can display more characters Accordingto the
need.
✓Along with the notice messages, date and time can be flashed timely.
✓ Currently only one message can be displayed at a time this can be overcome by using many.
