Dasborough, Lamb and Suseno (2015) in the article entitled “Understanding emotions in
higher education change management” attempts a discussion on the emotional issues that are
demonstrated by the employees serving in the sector of higher education due to the
implementation of the structural changes within the concerned institution. The following paper
attempts an analysis of the given article on the lines of change management and the contribution
of the article in the domain of change management. The authors of the article attempt a
discussion on the influence of the perceptions of the concerned organizational employees on the
emotional factors related to the changes that are faced by the organization. The authors further
attempt a discussion on the variations that are observed within the organization in terms of the
collective emotions that are demonstrated by the employees of the organization before and after
the completion of the structural changes at the higher educational organizations.
The major research question that has been highlighted by the authors of the organization
refer to the influences of the perceptions that are demonstrated by the employees who have been
serving in the organizations that belong to the sector of higher education (Dasborough, Lamb and
Suseno 2015). The research question follows logically from the literature that has been reviewed
for the composition of the article (Gelaidan, Al-Swidi and Mabkhot 2018). The article aims at
the proper discussion on the matters that are related to the structural changes that are experienced
by the organizations that have been operating within the sector of the higher education. The
authors state that the concerned employees face a higher amount of emotional changes due to the
implementation of the structural changes within the sector of higher education within the given
territorial boundaries (Dasborough, Lamb and Suseno 2015).
The article implements the strategy of the phenomenography in order to deal with the
completion of the interpretative nature of the study that is used in the composition of the article

(Dasborough, Lamb and Suseno 2015). The strategy that is implemented by the authors for the
composition of the given article is one of the best suited strategies that would help in the
development of the organization (Specht et al. 2018). This in turn helps in the development of
the issues that are discussed within the given article.
The participants who have been chosen for the article were the administrative employees
within the given educational organization. The article was composed on the basis of the
interviews that were conducted on 12 employees of the educational institution (Dasborough,
Lamb and Suseno 2015). The authors of the article had conducted deep and well-informed
interviews of the participants of the interview. The interviews were conducted both before and
after the merger activities in order to deal with the proper understanding of the responses that are
recorded by the participants.
The data was collected through the interviews that were conducted by the authors. The
interviews revealed that the concerned participants who have been involved in the structural
change processes that are presented within the educational organization operative within the
higher education sectors (Dasborough, Lamb and Suseno 2015). The data was analyzed through
the phenomenographical analysis which helped in the proper understanding of the responses that
were recorded to have been delivered by the participants of the interview (Stensaker et al. 2014).
This has helped in the development of the proper analysis of the responses that are gained for the
concerned paper. The major strengths of the of the article lie in the recognition of the changes
within the experiences of the employees as is perceived through the interviews that were
conducted by the concerned authors (Vosse and Aliyu 2018). However, the article faces
limitations in the matters that are related to the smaller sample size of the interview which was
conducted by the authors. The article also faces limitations due to the temporal specificity and

the location that was chosen for the conduction of the study (Dasborough, Lamb and Suseno
2015).
The article contributes a significant amount towards the theory of the change
management. The article contributes towards the importance of the emotional factors within the
management of the changes that are incorporated in the structure of the organization. The article
helps in the discussion on the organizational variations regarding the collective emotions
demonstrated by the organizational employees due to the structural changes at the business
organizations. The article also helps the readers and the future researchers to develop on the
impact of structural changes within the organization on emotional intelligence of employees.
