What do you understand by CRAAP test and how would you use it for your studies?
The CRAAP test is taken in order to check the objective reliability of various resources in
academic disciplines. It stands for currency, relevance, authority, accuracy and purpose in the
sources. There are vast number of different resources which are present online and it is really
difficult to check whether these resources can be trustworthy or not. The test is aiming it to make
it easier for students as well as the educators in order to determine whether the resources can be
trusted or not. Using the test researcher can easily reduce the chances of using the information
from resources that are not reliable enough. The CRAAP test was designed by Sara Blackelsee
in California State University. It is used in a number of different libraries at different
universities. It is a great way to criticize the sources that are used by researchers. Currency
explains the timeline of the information and whether the information is updated or revised
correctly or not (Portillo, Johnson and Johnson, 2020). It also helps in understanding the current
information when compare to the older information available about different topics. Relevance
helps in understanding how the resources do and information which is available can be linked to
the topic on which the studies conducted. It also successfully explains whether the information is
meant for relevant audience or not. Authority dictates the source of information. It explains about
the credentials of authors as well as organisations to which the information is affiliated. The
qualification of writer of information and their contact is also described in authority. Accuracy
helps in understanding the reliability, correctness as well as truthfulness of the content that is
available. It refers to whether the information has been reviewed properly or not and the
language which is used or unbiased and free of any emotion. Purpose helps in explaining the
intentions of the writer and the propaganda behind writing. In this way CRAAP test is effectively
used in order to successfully conduct a study by students and educators.
