1. Introduction
Personal development plan is defined as the structured and systematic process undertaken
by the individual in order to reflect upon their learning, achievement and experience with

the intention for making plans for personal, educational and career development.
Whereas, academic skills are concerned with the strategies and approaches applied to
learning (Roque, Raposo, and Alves, 2021) . These skills are also referred as study skills
or academic skills which are the collection of study habits, learning tactics and time
management tool which assist students in learning and absorbing knowledge from
learning institutes. These skills are essential for learners for acquiring good grades in
schools and also in the future as these skills helps the person in getting employment and
providing overall development through out the entire life. The further report is all about
understanding the concept of personal and professional development along with
discussing the value of short, medium and long term goals with the examples of my
personal goals for future.
2. Definition of the concept of personal and professional
development
The term professional development, as the name suggests, is concerned with developing one
self entirely in the job role with the aim of getting a deep insight and understanding of the job
the person is doing and ways to improve the performance level (Wimpenny and Orsini-Jones,
2020). Professional development consists of series of activities which is designed for
enhancing the skills required to perform the job role effectively and efficiently as possible
and essential throughout the one's life. Changes are taking place frequently in the business
environment whether it is a economical change, socio-cultural change or legislative changes
or even the technological innovations, thereby in order to remain competent and grow in the
career it is essential to enhance and develop few skill set. With the effective professional
development, knowledge and expertise of an individual related with his career is optimized to
the highest possible level. Professional development includes some of the vocational training
and education so that necessary skills and expertise is acquired. Examples of professional
development are: IT training, legal knowledge and expertise, HR policies etc (Hallsén and
Nordin, 2020).
Whereas personal development is related with acquisition of necessary skills in order
to attain the desired results for both in the job role and life in general. It is concerned with
maximizing the talent and potential both in and out of the workplace. With the help of
through understanding of what the person wants to achieve and the ways to attain them, it is
easier for developing the necessary skills so that desired results can be achieved. For instance,
there are two colleagues working for the same post and same job responsibility for designing
a marketing campaign. They both are creative and possess good communication skills, but
one of them is not good in coordination due to which conflicts arise at workplace. Thereby he
needs a personal training for coordinating with the other departments of the organization to
work effectively. Examples of personal developments are leadership and management
training, time management, and communication skills (Marinov and et. al., 2020).
3. Description and discussion of the value of short term goals
identifying at least 3 personal examples
Short term goals can be defined as the goals that leads the person towards their final
destination as these goals act as a stepping stone towards the long term goals. These goals are
achievable within a short span of time, say within a week or coupe of months (Han and Tong,
2021). Short term goals helps in avoiding procrastination and keeps the person focused

towards their long term goal. For attaining long term goals in timely manner, short term goals
are necessary as they provide clear path to be followed to reach final destination, enabling the
person to stay focus, motivate and doing one thing at a time. My personal short term goals
are:
Over a period of 2 months I want to enhance my time management skills which will
help me in organizing work and completing the task on time.
My second short term goals is to become a good listener which will enhance my
learning and decision making abilities.
And finally, my third goals is related with to improve my personal health and
wellness within 12 weeks which will help me in staying fit and healthy.
4. Description and discussion of the value of medium term
goals identifying at least 3 personal examples
The goals are which are attainable in a little more time than short term goals are known as
medium term goals (LIAO, 2021). Medium terms goals are essential measuring the path left
to be covered to reach final destination and how far it has been covered. Medium term goals
keep the person motivated and focused as it serve as the halfway for the final destination or
goal. Medium term goals are only attainable only after series of short term goals and helps in
evaluating whether we are on the right path or not towards our final destination. My personal
medium term goals are:
I want to complete a digital marketing course within a year which will be help me in
gaining competitive edge and grow in my career.
Within a duration of nine months I want to achieve a enhance my presentation skills
which will improve my ability to give effective and impressive presentation.
My third medium term goal is to become a good critical thinker and decision maker
based on facts and figures rather than based on emotions (Serrano Acero and Dejo-
Oricain, 2021).
5. Description and discussion of the value of long term goals
identifying at least 3 personal examples
Before starting a journey one has a clear destination in mind, in similar way while making an
effective plan it is essential to make a long term plans (Ehlers and Bonaudo, 2020). Without
long term goals or a final destination, an individual may wonder aimlessly or can get lost
altogether. Long term goals are made for the future and are time consuming therefore, for
making a future goals one needs to ponder and make decision wisely. Long term goals are
usually made with complete hard work, dedication and extensive planning. My personal long
term goals are:
In future I want to become a digital marketing expert with in depth knowledge of the
marketing and its tools and techniques.
Over a duration of 2 year I want to complete masters in marketing and business
management so that I could work for a reputed multi national company.
Within 1.5 years I want to develop ICT skills as this will help in sustain in
technological world and deal with millennial customers for the organization I am
working.

6. Description and discussion of the value of a Personal
Development Plan
Personal development plan is something that is prepared on account of self reflection and
improvement made by an individual with the intention to improve one self and prospects in
life (Caro-Gonzalez and Ferreira-Lopes, 2020). This detailed and objective personal
development plan will help the person in achieving his educational, career or personal goals.
Generally, this plan is created at workplace or place of learning while attending the session or
seminars. With the help of this plan, an individual comes across with their strengths and
weaknesses along with ways to improve or enhance the areas of improvement. There are
several benefits associated with the personal development plans such as it allows the
concerned person to bring necessary career change or enhancing the skills relevant to the job
profile and in general. Along with there are other benefits to for instance, personal
development plans helps in providing clarity to the personal vision as it gives the details of
what or where I will be in next few years. Having clear idea of the well defined vision helps
in making series of steps towards the long term vision and ways to achieve them.
Another significant aspect of the personal development plan is it helps in reinforcing
the core competencies of a person as this plan will keep the person focused or motivated
towards developing or improving the areas of weakness and contribute towards overall
personal and professional development (Thomas and et. al., 2021).
7.0 Conclusion
From the above stated report it has been concluded that academic skills and personal
development plan are the significant aspects for the enhancing the personal and professional
development of an individual. Study skills are acquired during the learning at schools and
college which serves as the basis for getting success in academics and are useful during the
entire course of life. Additionally, it has also been observed that short term and medium term
goals are essential for reaching the long term goals of a personal, academic and career goals.
Without setting up of these goals, an individual may get lost from the path or move aimlessly.
Furthermore, it has also been observed that there is distinction between personal and
professional development as professional development is related with acquiring the skills for
working effectively at workplace, whereas personal development is relate with developing
skills which are essential for general and work life both.
