There is no one who begins to try in order to change the world on their own. However,
there are certain people whose journey and work have changed the world. The paper aims to
discuss on one of the personalities that have made possible to bring change in music across the
world and considered as one of the significant figures in the popular culture.
One of the most influential singers and songwriter of the 20th century is Bob Dylan.
Robert Allen Zimmerman is widely recognized for his songs that chronicle political and social
issues. Bob Dylan born on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota. He began performing folk and
country songs while attending college with the name Bob Dylan. He is an American singer who
moved from folk to rock music in the 1960s through the infusion of rock and roll. Dylan is hailed
as the Shakespeare of his generation with the intellectualism of classic literature and poetry. The
legendary songwriter and singer have received Academy and Golden Globe awards and Grammy
along with some extremely prestigious titles such as the Nobel Prize for literature and the
Presidential Medal of Freedom.
According to Green (2017), the time period of 1960s ushers an entirely new era of music.
It was a time of upheaval in society, fashion and attitudes giving the lead to the rise of popular
culture including the genre of music as well. Before 1963, a reflection of the sound, style, and
beliefs was traced in the music of sixties. Many of the hit music was from the artist who was
successful in the fifties such as Dion, Elvis Presley, and Ray Charles. Several social influences
were followed after 1963 which lead changes in popular music. The melody began changing, and
the songs started to carry powerful social messages. Bob Dylan was not only the paramount to
this new movement but also change agent of music as well as music.
According to Inglis (2017), the 1960s is recognized as one of the most innovative and
chaotic eras for the drastically dramatic changes that took places during that specific time period.

the Vietnam War, President Kennedy’s assassination and the Civil Rights Movement that had a
large impact on America’s mood with the choice of music that reflected the changes. Dylan’s
1963 release of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan marked the beginning of his emergence, and he was
perceived as one of the poetic voice in the American popular music history. From 1965 onwards,
he began releasing more song that presented Dylan at his most innovative, combining literature
and music together. Dylan was involved in the Civil Rights Movement that is often credited to
his then girlfriend, Suze Rotolo. She was the daughter of union organizers as well as a volunteer
of Racial Equality for the Congress. Dylan was inspired by her political zeal and made him
introduce his very first protest song The death of Emmitt Till.
Since then, Dylan has been an active voice for political and social changes. Anyone who
listens to his music will certainly find his connection with the changes that was called by his
music. His songs have helped change the society over the course of history with powerful lyrics.
Music has the power to change the course of history regardless of the fact that it influences the
life of a single individual or an entire nation or the whole world. The living proof of this bold
statement is none other than Bob Dylan who has impacted the mood of America with his music
during the 1960s (Dylan et al., 2017).
The social changes of the 1960s is bone of the ley factor of music history. It was an era of
change that brought significant influences to the society with the sparking of new wave of music
and social activism. Bob Dylan is one of the significant and prominent personality that have
contributed majorly to this movement with his unique literature poetry music. Therefore,
certainly he is one of the personality who have not only changed music but also changes to the
world (Cran, 2016).
