Chapter One: Introduction
Employee retention introduces to the capability of business to retain its workforce. In an
organisational setting, main purpose of company is mainly to reduce employee turnover at
workplace, thereby reducing recruitment cost, training costs and loss of talent as well as
organisational knowledge. In order to retain talented employees at workplace, motivation is
highly important and significant for an organisation. Motivation is effective in talent
management. Talent management is the process of attracting and retaining high-performing and
talented employees for longer time period. For this research project, Boots UK limited is a
chosen British health and beauty retailer (Johnston and et. al., 2018). Boots limited was founded
in year 1849 by John Boot. There are different areas where Boots Limited serves their products
and services i.e. United Kingdom, Thailand, Norway etc. and headquartered in Beeston,
Nottinghamshire, England and UK. Company wants to increase their business operations at
international level and for this talent management is highly significant for them. Therefore, for
managing and retaining talent at workplace, company can use different types of motivational
schemes that turn to helps them in increasing of motivation that result in talent management and
retention.
1.1 Research Aim and Rationale
Aim of the research:
Main aim of tis research project is “To identify the importance of using motivation
schemes in retention of employees at workplace”: A study on Boots plc.
Rationale:
Main rationale for selecting this project is to determine the significance of using
motivational schemes in talent management and retention. Talent management is an important
aspect for the growth and success of company (Morshedi Tonekaboni, 2019). With the help of
talent management, come become able to attain competitive edge successfully and within less
period of time. Therefore, through this research project, it is clear for each and every
organisation to manage and retain talent by using motivational schemes.

A literature review contains a critical evaluation and the integration of information or
data from a different number of sources i.e. books, magazines, publication research, peer-
reviewed articles, journals etc. Literature review is a systematic process of secondary data
collection that is used for accomplishing research aim and objectives through research questions.
2.2 Main Body

According to Idowu (2017), there are major schemes used by Boots to increase
motivation level among employees because they are the people who takes company towards
success and development. It is the duty of organization to motivate employees time to time so
that they could do their work and operation more efficiently and effectively.
Paid time off holiday: It is the scheme that is used by Boots; in this employees are being
paid even in the situation of not working and away from their operations. In simple language
employees provided with leaves that are paid that means they would get their salary or
remuneration. This is the best way of motivating employees because through this employees
easily make balance between their professional and personal life.
Employee Assistance Program: This is the program adopted by Boots as it has great

Chapter Three: Methodology
3.1 Research Approach
Research approach has some set of actions that assist in evaluating and measuring gather
data. It is classified into deductive and inductive approach. In the present research report,
researcher has dependent on deductive approach because it helps in evaluation of numerical data
whereas inductive is not selected because it does not support numerical information and takes a
lot of time.
3.2 Research Strategy
Research strategy is defined as tool used by investigators for collection of relevant
information for conducting research. There are different types of research strategies case study,
survey, experimental research, grounded theory etc. Survey has selected by researcher because it
helps in collecting appropriate information in short period of time. The method is economical

information. So, sampling provides method through some participants act as representatives of
given large population (Retolaza and San-Jose, 2017). Probability and non-probability are
classified as types of sampling. Probability sampling is selected by researcher because it allows
selecting participants randomly and it also helps in taking large number of respondents. Non-
probability sampling is not selected because it selects samples with specific criteria.

The researcher has selected probability sampling for conducting research in successful
manner. 20 managers of Boots UK Limited are selected as participants and they act as
representatives of whole group of managers working in the organization.
3.5.2 Sampling Strategy
Researcher has selected simple random sampling in the current research because it is one
of the best probability methods that assist in saving resources like money, time and other
significant resources (Preser, 2016). In this technique every participant is chosen randomly
without any specific criteria and all the selected participants are treated equally when they are
