Introduction
It can be said that innovation is the key to the sustainability of businesses in the long run.
It is the role of organisations to incorporate a considerable amount of innovation in their
operations in order to ensure that they can gain competitive advantage while operating (Wu,
Parker and De 2014). Bord na Mona has been recognised as organisation that has been
incorporating innovation in order to satisfy the ultimate motive of development of the Irish
economy (Bordnamona.ie 2019). The company excels in sustainable development of the
environment and has various divisions such as biomass, Power generation or recycling /
renewable resources, Resources Recovery, Fuels, peat and Horticulture. The current paper will
focus in an innovation that falls in the realm of the renewable or recycling division. The main
nature of operations of the division is concerned with the generation of energy that is aimed
towards meeting the energy requirement needs of the country in the future. The main nature of
operations of the division is concerned with generation of energy from wind and solar power
generations. The innovation that will be discussed in the following section will be concerned
with the development with an alternative form technology that combines both wind and solar
power generation with the additional advantage of paper recycling (Bordnamona.ie 2019). The
following sections of the paper will discuss regarding the proposal for innovation, a detailed
insight to the innovation plan for the concerned division along with a reflection regarding the
project that was undertaken by the team.

The innovation that is being catered to by the organisation, follows a structure as
mentioned above. Generation of ideas is one of the most crucial parts of innovation. Since the
division is concerned with generation of power and recycling, the innovation idea has been
developed while brain storming regarding the same. Furthermore, sustainability is the priority of
the organisation as a result of which the innovation will add up to the sustainability capability of
the organisation. The current practices of the organisation are focused of sustainability and
hence, the same will be viable as per the nature of operations of the organisation.
The plan for innovation is also focussed at developing energy for the future needs of the
country as a result of which the proposal for the innovation is likely to receive a nod of approval
from the diverse stakeholders of the organisation. Moreover, the latter should be approved as it

will help in the help in improvement of the capabilities of the organisation in generation of
energy and catering to the sustainable needs of the environment. There are no potential barriers
to innovation that has been identified at present and is expected to stay the same.

The strategy that has been chosen for the organisation has been characterised by the
developed by the clean technology that will help in improving the competencies of the
organisation in catering to the future needs of the company. The vision is to sustain the activities
of the
company and to create a strategy that is characterised by the development of the activities that
help of the development of activities characterised by achievement of the needs of the future. It
is likely to help the company in the achievement of generation of electricity by use of 100% of
renewable sources. The drivers of the innovation has been identified as factors such as pollution,
increase in consumption of electricity and wastage of electricity. Apart from these services, it
will help in protecting the interests of the diverse groups of stakeholders. Thus, favourable nature

are expected. This is the reason why a considerable amount of the innovation budget should be
allocated for the said innovation.
Innovation plan
The innovation that is to be developed by the company uses renewable sources of energy
as the main fuel. It will use the main competencies of the company such as generation of
electricity through the use of wind and solar energy. The idea that has been created will
incorporate power generation capabilities of wind turbines with solar panel. The idea is that 90%
of the energy that is sourced from the unit will be let out for commercial use while the remaining
10% will be used to supply power to the plants that are responsible for the conversions of raw
energy top electricity. Furthermore, the idea incorporates paper recycling. Half of the product
will be let off for commercial use and the other half will be used to develop exercise books and
sheets which will be supplied to the under privileged children across Ireland and rest of UK. It
has been found that contributing to social and sustainable causes helps boost the goodwill of the
organisation and helps the latter in gaining acceptance from the part of the diverse stakeholders
of the company. The following is a lean innovation model. Lean innovation is a process of
innovation that is characterised by the development of a certain innovation while eliminating or
reducing the wastage that is generated while development of the technology and offering
products or services to the customers (Aguado, Alvarez and Domingo 2013).

The lean innovation model that has been adopted by the organisation revolves around four
factors. They are Strategy and Performance (providing value to the end users, leadership and
commitment towards improvement and efficiency in performance), Collaboration and skill
(Collaboration of organisations and skilled workforce and engineering), efficiency and
knowledge management (Re-usage of materials, lean thinking and sustainable innovation), and
continuous improvement (proper communication, internal and external partnerships along with
continuous improvement).
Technology roadmap
The technology roadmap refers to a plan that communicates an organisation’s technology
strategy. At the particular organisation, technology is used in an effective manner. The aim of
express technological use is to maximise the use of innovative technology. Wind turbines, solar
power panels and other forms of technology such as the use of recyclers has been incorporated
into the firmware of the company. The innovative idea that is being discussed in the following
paper incorporates the use of all the three aforementioned concepts. The aim of the latter to
generate electricity. It has been found out that the rise of population and industries has resulted in
the increase of harmful substances into the air which degrades the quality of the environment as a
whole (Jerrett et al. 2013). Hence, the innovation that is characterised by the generation of
electricity focusses on the generation of electricity that caused no harm to the environment
(Mwasilu et al. 2014). Thus, it can be said that the technology that is being used by the company
uses technology to mitigate the adverse environmental effects that the latter is subject to. The
wind power turbines will have special attachments of solar panel which will allow increased
generation of power from a single unit. Maximum part of the output that is being generated by
the unit will be used for commercial purposes and the remaining will be used for running a
recycler that will convert used paper to new recycled paper. Furthermore, the aim of the latter is
to contribute to the needs of under privileged people of the society across Ireland and UK as a
whole. Thus, the strategic decisions can be taken upon analysis of the technological roadmap that

has been developed by the organisation so that decisions can be made regarding the portion of
the budget that will be allocated for the development of the innovative technology that has been
discussed above (Dhillon et al. 2017).
Reflection
While working in the project there were various ideas that were identified. There were
various ideas that were identified through brain storming sessions. It felt good as the idea that
was proposed by me. The finalisation of the idea was followed by discussions in focus groups. I
personally feel that the idea that I contributed would be viable for the operations of the
organisation. Following are the pros and cons of the idea;
Advantages:
 The idea caters to the needs of environment through generation of eco-friendly forms of
technology.
 It reduces that expenses that would be incurred by running separate wind turbines and
solar power plants.
 Solar panels can be incorporated into the same the wind turbines would be transformed to
the innovative for of technology that is being discussed.
 It will help to cater to the needs of sustainability of the environment and will also
contribute to the development of the under privileged societies.
 Will help in recycling the areal waste and mitigation of paper waste accumulation.
Disadvantages:
 Can increase the load of individual units due to high power generation.
 Prototype not developed yet.
 The idea might or might not be feasible to develop by the technology team.
 High numbers of tries will be needed to perfect the technology that is being proposed in
the following section.

On a concluding note we have found that there are loop holes in the idea however, proper R&D
can help in realisation of the idea into reality.
