INTRODUCTION
Brexit is exit of United Kingdom from European Union which took place om 1st February
2020. Due to this, tourism around the world will get impacted and leave negative impacts upon
United Kingdom as it will increase restrictions for tourists to travel within the country and visit
the places that they want to visit (Burnett and Johnston, 2020). Present report is based upon
analysis of different articles that are related to assessment of implications of Brexit on tourism.
This report will be focusing upon various elements and impacts of it on travel and tourism within
and outside of UK.
MAIN BODY
Analysis of the way in which tourism will change after Brexit
United Kingdom exited European Union on 31st of January 2020 and it will leave impact
upon tourism around the world because it will affect the economic, social and political aspects.
Apart from this, in post transition period which will be ending on 31st December 2020 tourism
may get highly impacted. From the report of Deloitte, it has been determined that there are travel
and tourism flows between European Union and United Kingdom. EU is one of the main
destinations for all the tourists who are willing to visit UK and the main source of income comes
from UK and if it will be separated from EU then the income will huge challenge for EU. Apart
from this, the movement of tourists will also affect movement of tourists from EU to UK because
they have to follow instructions of government that are implied after Brexit. Because of it the
value of sterling will also get impacted and spending of tourists will be increased and due to this
the number of tourists in European Union will be increased (Lim, 2018).
Apart from all the negative implications there are several positive impacts of Brexit on
the nations. One of them is that it will increase the employment opportunities in travel and
tourism sector of UK. During the year 2014 it contributed almost 4.23 million jobs in UK which
is very high. On the other hand, more than 1.89 million individuals got direct employment within
the industry. Because of the pandemic situation most of the people are not able to bear their daily
expense but with the help of Brexit they will be able to get proper job which will make them
strong economically. Travel and tourism industry rely upon a significant number of migrants for
the purpose of employment. Due to shortage of employment and skills all around the world most
of the countries are dealing with weak economic position and because of Brexit some of them

may get impacted positively and others may get negatively impacted (Phillips, Page and Sebu,
2020). Some of the consumer and other impacts of Brexit could be understood with the help of
following discussion:
Air travel: In previous years due to open skies agreement between different countries
was very easy because it facilitated all the countries to reduce the regulations for tourist to travel
because Britain was the part of European Union. But as now United Kingdom is not part of EU
so the tourism within the country will get impacted. Now the tourists from various countries will
have to take permission to fly to another country. Apart from this, all the airlines will have to
take permission from the local authorities for the purpose of flying the flights. If they will be not
able to take permission on time then it may result in delays of arrival and departure of flights
from country to country. In order to deal with such types of situations it will eb very important
for legal authorities of UK as well as EU to assure that they are able to negotiate this specific
area (Sima, 2017).
Medical and insurance emergencies: All the individuals who are living in European
Union EHIC which is European Health Insurance Card which help them to access the local
health services. It was also available for all the residents of UK and now if it will get separated
from EU then the services that will be related to EHIC will not be no more available for all the
residents of UK. All these facilities could be availed by residents of EU and EEA countries and if
now any of the individuals will fly from EU to UK, they will not get any of such services. It will
also leave impact upon limit of local health access to the local traveller’s as their travel insurance
premium will get impacted. In upcoming months of the year travel and tourism industry will be
facing different types of issues and one of them could be an upheaval because of this event. Now
new regulations for using all the health care services will be imposed by EU as well as UK’s
government. If all of them will not be cope up by UK and EU then it will leave impact upon the
management of travel and tourism industry within the country (Implication of Brexit on travel

Freedom of movement: The legal authorities of United Kingdom retains passport
control and it is also outside the border free Schengen area. With the help of it all the travellers
are able to travel freely with continental Europe. But as now UK will not be the part of EU so
this policy will depend upon mutual settlement of the governments of both the regions. Apart
from this, for travelling outside the country EU and UK will have to seek new bilateral visa

agreements with each other as well as other countries. It will be beneficial for the tourists as well
as the local individuals of the country. If they will not be able to formulate new policies then it
will be leaving negative implications upon travel and tourism within the country.
By analysing all the above implications, it has been evaluated that travel and tourism will
get impacted if Britain will get separated from European Union. If the legal authorities of UK
and EU will not be able to formulate effective strategies to deal with negative impacts of it then
it will leave impact upon the economic growth as well as development of country. On the other
hand, travel and tourism will also get decreased when the legal authorities will not be able to
respond the issues in systematic manner then it will affect economic growth. All the changes that
will be taking place because of Brexit will not take place over night it will take time to
implement all the changes (Impacts of Brexit on Tourism, 2020).
CONCLUSION
From the above discussion it has been analysed that Brexit is the exit of Britain from
European union which will be leaving various types of negative implications. It will affect whole
travel and tourism industry in negative manner. Apart from this, some of the negative
implications of it will be deceased freedom of travelling, flying related issues and decreased right
to take health care in UK and EU. Because of all these issues all the individuals who willing to
travel from EU to UK or UK to EU will have to face various challenges. In order to reduce the
negative implications of all the issues it will be very important legal authorities of both the
regions to assure formulation of effective strategies.
