4PORTFOLIO
Using the Gibbs Reflective Cycle, I would like to reflect on my experience in the aged
care, while preparing for certificate 3 in 2007. I was instructed about the hand washing
protocol in the workplace. When dealing with the patient’s wound, I had followed hand
hygiene before dressing. However, I forgot to hand wash after dressing as I had to attend
another patient.
Feelings:
I felt guilty and sad for this event. I was afraid of spread of infection as the risk was
high. Since, it would have taken 5 minutes in washing hands with gel based solution, I should
not have neglected.
Evaluation:
Other than this worst part, the best part of the experience was learning my faults and
how to be more efficient in future with planning and time management. I need to be more
adherent to the workplace protocol.
Analysis:
Hand hygiene is one of the most factors in nursing practice. It is an important aspect
focused by the “National Hand Hygiene initiative” in Australia. The NMBA standards
emphasize the practioners to deliver safe and competent care
(Nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au, 2016).
Conclusion:

5PORTFOLIO
I need to adhere to the NMBA standards more strictly in future and therefore; I have
marked this event to my journal. I should have been more aware of the implications of the
failure to hand wash on patient’s well being.
Action plan:
My actions in future demonstrate strict adherence to the hand hygiene protocol. My
plan is to set alarm for every important event that requires hand wash. I also need to
coordinate well with my seniors to overcome this issue.
