Introduction
In this assessment, human resource management is regarding handling the human resource of the
British Airways city flyer is the way that rather maximum or optimum use of the HRM. Brit9ish
Airways is the largest international airline that routes over 550 destinations worldwide. It also
provides excellent service and a commitment level of work. This study is about a famous service
organization that is related to airways. Additionally, it describes essential aspects of human
resource management like recruitment, human resource planning, selection procedure, training
and development etc. in the British airways. There is a comparison also between the selection
processes of the Airways and different service industries for the information and knowledge
about the selection procedure in various industries. It will define how it can make the staff
properly trained, their compensation, measures etc. There is also discussion about the training
needs and what is the procedure of choosing the candidate in the British Airways city flyer.

This work is depicting the role of employees in the organization by the analysis of demand and
supply and British Airways is provides some benefits in the comparison of other organization to
the employees. So, the demand and supply and the purpose of human resource planning are
briefly described in this report.
1.1. Analyse the role and purpose of human resource management in a selected
service industry
Human Resource Management (HRM) is a field in almost every organization which functions to
the hiring of the employees by testing them on some levels like group discussion, written test,
interviews etc. that can develop employees through incentives, benefits etc. This is managed by
Human Resource (HR) manager and is naturally plays a centric role in any business strategy.
Recently, British Airways had contracted the agreement for the flights from Heathrow to
Madeira. So, a Human Resource Officer (HRO) has been appointed in order to manage the flight
related queries. The purpose of an HRM is to coordinate with people in order to achieve
organizational goals within an organization. The human resource department communicates with
the employees and make them comfort with the organization’s culture (Swain, 2019).
Some of the HRM functions listed below:
Go through the laws of an employee.
Listening and answering the employees to satisfy them in the perspective of an
organization.
Resolve employee problems in order to achieve the organizational goals
HRM binds people with the organizations by various policies and the processes that lead to the
development of both i.e. an organization and an employee (Krishnani, 2015).
In British Airways, the flight duration from Heathrow to Madeira is of four hours and there are
four flights are available in the peak summer season and three flights in the rest of year. So, these
timings are illustrated by the Human Resource manager to employees in order to develop
coordination between the organization and an employee. In order to approach the management of
HR in British Airways there are two main functions:

Hard HRM
Soft HRM treats an employee in an organization as an important part in business whereas Hard
HRM treats the employee as a simple resource for an organization as the soft HRM here
concentrates upon the needs and reward of an employee and on the other hand, hard HRM
mainly identify the organizational requirements. In terms of pay structure, soft HRM
concentrates on providing the rewards/profit shares to the employees of an organization whereas
hard HRM focuses mainly on providing enough pay to the employees that can give a little
empowerment to the employees. Hence, both approaches and functions are good at their place
with their different functionalities. Overall, the role of the Human Resource manager is to create
and implement the policies for an organization that is mandatory for every employee to follow
appropriately (Ghodke, 2017), (Das, 2017).
1.2. Justify human resources plan based on an analysis of supply and demand for a
selected service industry business
Human resource planning used to forecast the future human resource requirements by the
organization in order to fulfil the organizational requirements in the perspective of human
resource capacity. This is the way the human resource capacity of organization can be analysed
under the economic concept of demand and supply. This management helps the organization to
meet future requirements.
Internal labour cost: It is an effective approach for human resource plan in which experts are
appointed earlier and also for employees, special training programs are organized in order to
improve the hospitality knowledge which is done through the experts. So, it is important to
analyse which employee is beneficial for organization in gaining profits and which are not so,
effective action plans are taken in organization.
External labour cost: In British Airways, external labour cost is also one of the major factors
because, in organization, the rate of retirement of employees is greater than the rate of
recruitment process. So that there are various resource plans such as written, interviews take
place.

Both the above factors show the demands of British Airways and in order to fulfil the demands,
human resource management is required. So, supplies of skilled labour in organization is
required is required. Many factors aim for the supply of labour in British Airways listed below:
The main factor is competition between the organizations in the perspective of the salaries of
employees offered by organization. Mainly, British Airways provide more salary to the
employee that they are talking of. Employee is free to switch in any organization that’s why
British Airways provide more compensation to the employee than any other organizations. The
other factor is unemployment when there is an excess need for employees in the organization.
Transport facility in British Airways is provided to the customers by bus from the airport gate to
an airplane because flights are running 24 hours so the customer must need good facilities every
time.
So, overall the supply and demands are needed to be analysed for the benefits of employees as
well as the organizations by the use of some human resource plans (Bruce, 2015).
Conclusion
As per above discussion, the supply and demand in organization for the employees are increasing
so the human resource planning is compulsory as in order to meet the organizational and
employee requirements proper planning is required. So, British Airways propose the best plan
than other organizations by adding more compensation to the employee salary. Hence, it can be
seen that human resource planning is an essential part of the demand and supply of the
employees in British Airways.

advantage and disadvantage of employment laws within the airline firm are explained for
providing comprehensive information about human resource management.

The employment relation is defined as the indulgent and co-operation within the organizational
members within the organization. Proper employee relation helps the manager to work in
collaboration in the firm for eluding conflicts and breaches in the working scenario. The present
state of employment relations in the airline industry are mentioned below:
Unionization and Structure of Trade Unions
The World Federation of Trade Unions- The World Federation of Trade Unions was
recognized in the year 1945. The main of this employee relation is to bring composed with the
trade unions of the world (Kaufman. 2018). The trade union international of labors in the airline
industry is the international trade which is linked with the World Federation of Trade Unions.
The trade union is the union group of a worker who linked with each other for attaining a
common goal in an effective way. It can be seen that the trade unions of British Airways work to
unite the staff of an organisation for protecting their interest while working and tries to solve
their grievances.
Culture- It is to be seen that the culture and corporate standards at British Airways requires the
entire membership to wear their formal uniforms. The culture and working scenario of British
Airways are different from other airline company.
Collective bargains and Negotiation- The collective bargains is simply defined as the
procedure in which the trade union members and management transfer upon the organizational
scope statement (Lee, et. al., 2018). In British Airways, the staffs and labors are able to transfer
and make a charitable agreement on different topics like as salaries, benefits, raises, and others.
Reconciliation and Consultation: The Settlement and Discussion process for employee
conflicts in the organization is made with the help of firms such as counseling and others.

Employee Participation and Empowerment- The workers in the organization consists of the
pilots, air hostess, staffs who are allowed to contribute in the organizational planning process for
fulfilling the stated goals and objective of the firm. It can be seen that the involvement of
employees in the organizational meeting will be helpful in reducing the conflicts and issues
within the organization (Huang, et al., 2018). Also, the employees will come to know their

costs are reduced and employees retrenched from their current job position. The organisation can
fairly handle this situation by taking payment of fines, recompense due to economizing and
others.
The employment contract between the company and employee needs to be strictly followed by
the organisation for protecting and supporting the employees in a better way. The Employment
Act 2002 provides new rule and policy related to the maternity, adoption or paternity leaves
which are made mandatory by the organisation (Villajos, et. al., 2019). The changes are only
done for reforming the current labour law in the UK.
Hence, it is to be seen that the advantage of employment law is higher than its disadvantage. The
employment law and rules are required to be followed properly while developing the
organizational policy. This will be helpful in attaining the aim and current market trends in an
effective and efficient way.

As per the discussion made in the above section, it is clear that the employment rules, legislation
and its present state in the airline industry will be obliging in preparation of human resource
management. Hence, it can be considered that human resource management is an essential part
of the success and development of the airline industry like British Airways.
