INTRODUCTION
Leadership is about leading any particular group, organization or company. It has
important role in motivating people or follower to achieve organizational goal. Operation
management is part of company that deals with supervision on production. It has role of resource
management and production procedure. This case study is based on British steel company which
is situated in Scunthorpe, United Kingdom. It was established in 2016. British steel company
provides products like construction steel, railing, wire rod etc. This report is about roles of
manager, leader and operation management in British steel industry. This report will discuss
impact of technological changes happening in the external environment and different forms of
operational challenges. This report will also describe value of operation management in
achieving business objectives.
MAIN BODY
LO1:
P1 Role and characteristics of leader and manager:
Role of leader: Leader plays role of providing clear vision to its people or its followers. It takes
initial action to perform any task or work then its followers precede same (Chen and Lin, 2018).
A leader has role of inspiring and motivating its follower to achieve their goals.
Characteristics of leader: Leader is self-aware and focuses on self-development. They are
innovating, and always focuses on new ideas to work on. It has effective communication to
address its followers. Leader has desire to influence its team. Leader has relevant knowledge of
everything he works on.
Role of manager: Manager has role of making decisions for organization or company. Manager
has role to give productivity to its company. Leader commands its co-worker to perform
organizational task and achieve its goals. Leader has role to analyse its company's market
position.
Characteristics of manager: Manager makes work culture comfortable to ensure employee can
work efficiently. Manager handles pressure well when it has goals to accomplish. They
communicate to employees directly and honestly. They always monitor the task assigned to its
employee.

Organizational conflicts may arise any time within the organization due to several reasons and
because of which organizational working is often affected. Following are different role of
leadership and function of manager in situational context (Carsten, Uhl-Bien and Huang, 2018).
Managers, tend to change the department of the responsible employees or tend to actions
according to the organizational policies to eliminate the chances of facing organizational
conflicts.
Leadership tend to utilize its effective relationship with the employees and then try to reach the
core value which is source of conflicts through this it can ensure that team work spirit is
maintained and high productivity is achieved.

Implementation of change in the working procedure-
Organizations like British steel company has to ensure that it is able to implement changes in its
work culture as per the requirements through this it can ensure high work productivity and
achieve competitive edge (De Smet, 2018).
Managers tend to develop work procedures and utilize their power to motivate employees for
implementing changes in the procedure through which high work productivity can be achieved.
Leadership, motivate employees to learn new through which they can achieve their personal and
professional goals, through this steps it tend to ensure that employee retention is also improved
and high work productivity is also achieved.
Loss to company-
Loss to company may arise at any point of time and due to which overall working is affected and
following are different manager and leadership approaches for case of loss to company (Hajro,
2019).
Managers tend to reduce or change the responsible staff and make new recruitments through
which it can ensure that company is fill with new skills and high work capability.
Leadership tend to motivate employees to increase their work productivity so that loss can be
overpowered.
P3: Different theories and models of leadership
Following are the different approaches which organizational leadership has to follow in order to
maintain efficient working with the departments and thus through which chances of goal
achievement can be increased.
Situational leadership- The situational leadership states that organizational leadership must
improvise its working strategy according to the arising different organizational situations through
which it can influence employees to implement changes in their working capability such that
overall work productivity can be established (Zaid, Jaaron and Bon, 2018).
Thus this type of working procedure of the leadership will be highly beneficial for British steel
company because the company tend to implement changes in the working procedure according
to the changing market trends. Thus changing work procedure of the leadership will influence
employees to implement changes through this high work productivity can be achieved.
Contingency- The contingency theory of leadership trend to showcase that there is no fixed way
or procedure of leading individuals through which high work productivity can be achieved.

Therefore it tend to implement different working measures according to the raised situations and
organizational requirements through which it tend to ensure that company is able to work
according to the organizational requirements.
British steel company is having large number of employees workforces because of which this
type of leadership will not be beneficial for the organization because in order to achieve high
work productivity it has to establish synchronism between different departments and due to
which continuous changing work procedure will affect the working capability (Hasibuan
and .et.al., 2020).
System leadership- System leadership is the set of capability and skills which are required by
the organizational leadership for maintaining an efficient working procedure within different
departments and organizational levels. Through this it can ensure that employees are able to
collaborate their efforts for the achievement of a common target and achieving a desired target.
This type of leadership will be highly beneficial for British steel because the leadership tend to
influence the employees working in different departments that to implement appropriate chances
and improve their problem solving skills (Jang, Zheng and Bosselman, 2017). Through this it can
ensure high work creativity and problem solving.
M2: Strength and weakness of different approaches according to different situations
Contingency-
Strength- Organizational leadership is able to implement new and trendy work procedures in the
working.
Weaknesses- Employees are not able to implement continuous changes in work process makes it
difficult for employees to implement change.
System leadership-
Strength- Focuses on individual achieving their allot tasks because of which is highly work
productive.
Weaknesses- Due to long chain of command within organization makes it difficult to analyse the
working capability of each employee.
Situational leadership-
Strength- Leadership ensure that company is able to surpass the current situation and achieve its
targets.
Weaknesses- Departmental synchronism is often affected due to changes in command.

P4: Key approaches to operations management and the role of leadership and management
Operations management in the organization is the systematic overall organizational operation
through which overall operations are done and organizational goals are achieved. Following are
the key approaches for the operations management.
Six Sigma- Six sigma is an methodology which is being used by organization to reduce the
chance of errors by which it can ensue high level of work productivity and also tend to ensure
that customers will be having best in class products (McAdam, Miller and McSorley, 2019).
Thus in order to achieve this organizational leadership can influence employees to analyse the
work process which is required for achieving a common target. Management tend to develop
additional job centric department through which it tend to ensure that the final quality of product
is high.
Lean & Agile manufacturing- This is a modern approach which consist of integrated approach
of specific buying and use of technology for minimizing the wastage generated through which
the company tend to minimize the cost established in the development of products.
Organizational leadership tend to analyse the working capability of the employees and then
motivate them for implementing changes in their work process through which targets can be
achieved. Managers tend to evaluate the current market working process and then develop
working plan in such a way that it is able to increase the work productivity of British steel.
TQM- Total quality management is the continuous process which include process like detecting
and reducing the errors during the process of manufacturing and tend to steam line the supply
chain. Since efforts are made for the improvement of quality of developed product, for which
leadership tend to segregate different levels of working among employees as per their work
capability and tend to achieve desired target. Whereas managers manage the overall work
productivity and evaluate the difference between required work capability and develop improvise
working process accordingly.

It is very important for organization that it efficiently manage its organizational operations
because through this it can ensure that it is able to work according to the required work rats and

External factors:
Political- The political instabilities of the UK is making a direct negative impact upon the
working capability of the company and this can be seen in the present time of COVID-19 in

which the government has to put lockdown within the country and because of which the
organizational working is affected.
Economical- Company has to establish its product pricing in such a way that it is able to achieve
high profit margin but also at the same time it has to ensure that pricing is not set high enough
otherwise it will make a negative impact upon the organizational sales (Tran, 2017).
Social- British steels has to implement appropriate changes in its product development according
to the latest market trends and thus through this can ensure that it is able to attract new and
trendy crowd towards the organization. But this is not as easy as it is being said because
company has to analyse the current market trend and customer requirements.
Technological- Company has to make a high amount of capital investment through which it can
ensure that high level of work quality is being achieved and also the same time it has to make
sure that synchronism in the work productivity is also achieved. Through this improvisations it
the work process it can ensure that company is able to achieve its desired target.
Legal- Organizations like British steel has to develop its organizational working planning
according to the legal legislations provided by the government because if the company is not
able to work according to the legal laws then it have to face penalties which will make negative
impact upon its economic growth.
Environment- British steel has to develop its organizational working in such a way that it is able
to minimize the negative upon the environment and thus has to make appropriate changes

the environment company can also be able to develop a positive for the customers will increase

Ethics- Company ethics is one of the main consideration which affects the decision-making of
leadership and managers this is important because it tend to make a concentrated effect on the
operational management. This the operational planning for the British steel has to be done in
such a way that it is able to fulfil all the employee requirements and provide high level of work
productivity.
Culture- Operational planning have to developed in such a way that it empower organizational
employees to collaborate their ideas for effective problem solving and also at the same time

can ensure it is able to achieve high level of work productivity.
M4: Effect of factors which affect business environment
Company has improvise its working capability according to the changing external factors
through which it can make sure that it is able to achieve desired target. With that it has to
develop operational working in such a way that internal working is synchronised and chances of
goal achievement can be increased.
CONCLUSION
This report has concluded that a company runs smoothly by team work of manager,
leader, operation management and employees. There are multiple roles of leader and manager in
a company and multiple situations they handle. BSC has production of steel wire, construction
steel etc. and operation management looks after its production and makes sure that production
has no error in it. Manager and leader looks after increasing productivity. This report has also
described external factors impacting on company and how company deals with it. Overall it has
concluded that a company faces multiple types of situations and how it handles with those
situations.
