Fundamental British Values
There are a few fundamental British values as per Ofsted. They are –
• Democracy
• The rule of law
• Mutual respect for everyone in spite of having different faiths and believes
• Mutual respect for people without faith
• Tolerance for various people without any discrimination on the basis of
colour, religion, gender or creed

Values that need to be taught
• They need to be taught to develop self knowledge, self
confidence and most importantly self esteem
• They should be taught to distinguish between right and
wrong and respect the civil and criminal laws in England
• They should be taught to accept responsibility of their
behaviour and work towards the betterment of the society
• To respect the various public institutions located in England
and respect everything

Schools Promoting British Values
• The schools must promote British Values rather than teaching something, hence keeping the
scope of respectful disagreement
• The Department of Education stressed upon promoting democracy, individual liberty, rule of law,
tolerance.
• The phrase British Values for different people has different perspectives and this can create
confusion among students.
• British Values are different for people with conservative, traditional mindset and people with
tolerance and broadmindedness.

• For promoting British Values it is important that teachers understand Britain
as a nation of ethnic cultures of different kinds.
• There is the scope for teachers to involve in continuous professional
development as well.
• Individuals have different perceptions due to age and perception.
• Teachers must need to make sure that stereotyped views are eliminated from
the equation

• British values help to create a disciplined and mannered
environment under which the children are able to grow

which would help in the education of the students
