Assessment Task 1.
Provide answers to all of the questions below:
1. Identify one internal information source and one external information source that can be used
to identify sustainability improvements that a company could make. For each source, explain
how this source can be used to develop the sustainability policy.
= The following internal sources can be utilised to discover relevant concerns for this policy:
Internal compliance review of current procedures and systems: the review will assist the
organisation in identifying areas that require improvement. The evaluation will also help set a
baseline for the new policies and assist management in deciding which way to take the policy.
Obtaining information from employees such as operators: This data will assist the organisation in
analysing the efficacy of present policies and how they might be improved. Employees will be
polled for information.
Human resources and training policies: The organization's human resources will give the finest
policy review.
External sources of information that can be utilised are as follows:
National, state, or local regulators: The regulators will assist management in determining if policies
are in accordance with national, state, and local rules. If the policies are deficient,
modifications must be made to bring them in line with the rules.
Industry associations: Industry associations may assist organisations in learning about industry
standard standards and making modifications to such policies as needed.

Environmental/sustainability websites: These websites are also a valuable source of knowledge for
comprehending the issues in current policies concerning environmental concerns and
sustainability. These websites are constantly updated with new information that might benefit
the organisation.
2. Outline the purpose and scope of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation
Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Give an example of how a business would have to modify its business
practices to conform to this legislation.
= The EPBC statutes are essentially the environmental legislation of each Australian state. It
includes environmental assessments and permits, as well as the preservation of significant
biodiversity and the upkeep of vital environmental and historical assets. The EPBC Law
enables Australia to work with provinces and territories to develop a genuinely national
environmental and historical protection framework. The EPBC Law established a legislative
framework for the conservation and management of nationally and globally significant animals,
flora, and species, as well as heritage fields, which are classified by the EPBC legislation as
issues of public environmental interest. The main purpose of the EPA is to repair, conserve,
and promote public wellbeing of NSW's air while simultaneously guaranteeing ecologically
sustainable growth.

3. Outline the purpose and scope of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme.
Give an example of how a business would have to modify its business practices to conform to
these regulations.
= The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) is
an important piece of environmental law enacted by the Australian Government
on July 16, 2000. The EPBC Act allows the Australian Government to collaborate
with the states and territories to provide a genuinely national plan of
environmental and historic preservation, as well as biodiversity conservation. The
EPBC Act concentrates the interests of the Australian Government on concerns of
national environmental significance, with the states and territories responsible for
topics of state and local relevance.
4. Describe how complying with the Australian Packaging Covenant voluntary code of practice
could affect the way a company does business.
= The Australian Packaging Covenant ('Covenant') is an agreement among supply chain firms and
all levels of government to eliminate the environmental implications of consumer packaging.
This will be accomplished by:
designing more resource-efficient and recyclable packaging increasing the recovery and recycling
of used packaging from households and away from home sources taking steps to reduce the
prevalence and impact of litter

5. Describe how complying with the Australian Ecolabel Program voluntary code of practice
could affect the way a company does business.
= Supply-chain partners are an essential external source since they collaborate with a
company for mutual gain and to build a stronger commercial connection. Internal business
meetings with management or supervisors can be a valuable source of internal information for
a company. A company's management and organisational structure are internal information
sources that contribute in the creation of its sustainability plan. Maintaining strong
relationships with supply chain partners allows value-added services to achieve consistency in
company performance, service quality, and overall favourable brand reputation (Jeong, 2015).
6. List at least four environmental and resource sustainability measurements that a company
could use to establish sustainability benchmarks.
= The Clean Air Act of the Environmental Protection Agency controls air pollution from both fixed
and mobile sources. This statute, among other things, empowers the EPA to set National
Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) to safeguard public health and welfare and to control
hazardous air pollutant emissions.
Goals:

The goal is to reduce carbon emissions from the electricity industry by 30% from 2005 levels.
The idea would also reduce pollution that causes soot and smog by more than 25% by 2030.
By 2030, the Clean Power Plan will result in climate and health benefits totalling $55 billion to $93
billion.
7. Describe three purchasing approaches that can contribute to sustainable work practices.
= 1. Make Sustainability a Priority
Sustainability must be included into company plans and reflected in business objectives. This
entails making it a top priority in all aspects of organisational operations.
As with any other company endeavour, you must develop a strategy and assign responsibilities.
Hold people responsible and track their progress.
After that, repeat the process. This will give your sustainability efforts a boost.
2. Collaborate with Employees
Invest time in educating staff about the importance of environmental sustainability and sharing what
the firm is doing to preserve resources.
Solicit further suggestions for resource conservation from staff.

Assessment Task 2.
Complete the following activities:
Carefully read the following scenario.
You are the Administration Manager of a health resort and convention centre in the Blue
Mountains, near Sydney. The resort, Blue Healer, is made up of five areas: catering, spa,
meeting rooms accommodation, and administration. Each area has its own full-time
manager.
The kitchen is large enough to feed over 100 people three meals each day. There are two
full-time kitchen staff, and the rest of the staff are hired on a casual basis to cater for
functions and retreats.
There is accommodation for 80 people in twin and double rooms. Surrounding hotels
provide further accommodation when needed.
The spa has two saunas, a steam room, three warm water spas, four massage rooms and
two consultation rooms where naturopathic consultations and facial treatments are
performed. The spa runs continuously, mostly due to locals visiting, whether a course is
running or not.
There is also an office where the accounts are done, and records kept. It is an open plan
office with 5 staff workstations. Most staff prefer to work with their own laptops, connected
to the larger computer screens.
Much of Blue Healer’s administrative work is carried out in the office, but several staff work
from home several days each week.
There are four meeting rooms of various sizes, and these can be opened up to make one
large room for functions such as weddings and courses. There is also a reception and
administration area where computers and printers can be accessed.
As Administration Manager, you are responsible for the office area as well as the meeting
rooms.
Blue Healer has recently adopted a Sustainability Policy and Procedures and each area
manager has been requested to determine how these will impact their work team’s
activities.
The CEO has indicated that Blue Healer does not want to incur any additional costs in
implementing the Sustainability Policy and Procedures. If any additional resources are
necessary, management expects that an itemised budget will be submitted to them before
resources are approved and allocated.
Currently the organisation has the following issues and practices:
There is older style florescent lighting throughout the building. These lights are often
left on after the workday has finished, and the cleaners turn them off when they have
finished with their work.
There are no formal energy usage procedures for staff or signage to remind staff about

these.
The company does not have a policy for purchasing equipment and buys equipment
when required; often purchasing whatever is on special at the time.
There are two company vehicles. Both vehicles are now five years old and need to be
upgraded.
Staff buy stationary requirements on an ad hoc basis, often resulting in large stocks of
items such as notepads and A grade printer paper.
Kitchen waste is often thrown in the general refuse bin
There is a waste bin and recycling bins, which are often used incorrectly.
The office is cleaned once a week by contract cleaners who use regular cleaning
products.
Question.1. Develop a Sustainability Improvement Report.
Review the following websites and take notes on sustainability targets that would be
appropriate for the case study organisation.
https://www.business.gov.au/risk-management/environmental-impact/environmental-
management/environmental-legislation-licences-and-permits
http://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/services-and-advice/business/energy-and-materials-

Conduct further research using the Internet or any other source of information to identify the
company’s sustainability obligations and how these can be met.
Using your research and analysis, develop a report on your area of Blue Healer to
present at a senior management meeting. Your report should include the following:
An introduction: state the purpose of the report and summarise the current
organisational sustainability practices.
Identify the environmental regulations that apply to the organisation
Describe, and analyse, procedures that would assess Blue Healer’s compliance
with the environmental/ sustainability regulations
Explain at least five environmental and resource efficiency systems and
procedures that could be relevant for the Blue Healer.

Blue Healer: Sustainability improvement report
Introduction
Blue HealerReport on Sustainability ImprovementIntroduction The study's purpose is to draw
managerial attention to the importance of establishing sustainability policies and procedures in
order to close the gap generated by these conditions, which can help administration in the future
while also protecting and maintaining the environment for future generations. Older fluorescent
illumination is used throughout the power, and lights are usually left open after the workday is
ended, and cleaners shut them off after they're through with their duties, in accordance with
modern organisational sustainability rules. There are no specific energy usage guidelines for
workers, nor are there any reminder signs. There is no established system for procuring
equipment, and it is typically acquired as needed. A five-year-old vehicle is being used, resulting in
high fuel consumption and pollution.

• At the end of the day, switch off all lights. • Whenever possible, rather than keeping equipment on
standby, turn it off altogether.
• Place old paper, cardboard, aluminium cans, and plastic in recycling containers.
• Reduce water use by turning off the faucet after each usage.
• Only print papers that must be read or utilised as a tangible copy.
Benchmarks
Purchasing equipment with at least a 3.5 star energy rating.
• To save printing paper, utilise double-sided sheets whenever practical.
• Materials that may be recycled should be deposited in the proper bins.
Energy efficiency issues

Before concluding the meeting, ask for the participants’ approval of your report and
its action plan.
Use the following space to capture your notes for this meeting:
It is quite wonderful for us to discus the sustainability plan of our organization. Over the time, it is
seen that there were some issues pertaining to sustainability. With this regard, a well-structured
plan is made so can bring better practises to the organization.
As the made plan was approved by the participants so it is fair enough citing that now we are in
position to put our side forward and imparting the fabricated plans.
The strategy of building a good operational culture some strategies were made such as an
appropriate method of managing waste. Using beans in absolute manner, imparting strategy for
plan purchase etc.
these strategies would be helpful for the entity in making itself stronger in term of sustainability.
If your have any questions then may ask-
Q1 What would be cost of doing it all and how it would be recovered?
Responding- It is a fair questions but the plan is made for just 12 months and it would be based on
cost benefit model so before implementation both cost and benefit factors are to be taken into
consideration. If the cost is recoverable then only the plans are to be operationalized.

Question.4. Deliver a sustainability training session for your team.
At the outset of the presentation, indicate that the team will be able to ask questions during
and at the end of the presentation and may offer suggestions for additional strategies.
Clearly deliver your presentation content using the slides you have developed.
When you have summarised the Sustainability Policy and Procedures and your Sustainability
Improvement Report, discuss your findings from your inspection.
Ask the meeting attendees for their suggestions for improving their environmental and
resource efficiency management.
Encourage them to identify more energy efficient ways of doing their jobs, and evaluate these
strategies in the group.
When you ask the meeting participants about their own resource usage practices, keep in
mind that they are actually colleagues roleplaying members of your team, not Blue Healer
employees. So, when you question them, make it clear that you are also asking for an honest
reply to your questions as it applies to them in real life. As well as taking note of their
responses, open up discussion about why they use resources in the way they do and whether
they have considered changing this.
Your team members should understand their own role in achieving sustainability
improvements.
Take notes on these discussions to assist you in the next activity.
As well as present the information, you are required, in the role of Administration Manager, to
solve problems that arise during the meeting, so pay attention to the issues raised by the
group and try to find solutions to each.
During and after the presentation, demonstrate effective communication skills including:
Speaking clearly and concisely
Using non-verbal communication to assist with understanding
Asking questions to identify required information
Responding to questions as required
Using active listening techniques to confirm understanding
You will be assessed on the quality of your presentation skills as well as the presentation
itself.

Assessment Task 4 Instructions
Complete the following activities:
Carefully read the following scenario.
Assume that the Sustainability Improvement Report you developed has been implemented, as
well as findings from sustainability inspections and reports in other areas of the resort.
Sustainability initiatives that have been implemented include:
Energy audit and all recommendations implemented including signage about energy use
(e.g. switch off lights at night, turn down brightness, turn off taps)
Recycling policy introduced, and three more recycling bins introduced.
Green purchasing policy developed (on staff intranet, email sent to staff to advise).
Green transport policy developed and implemented (on staff intranet, email sent to staff to
advise).
Assume also the following sustainability targets:
Reduce electricity consumption by 20% within six months.
Promote awareness of sustainability initiatives amongst all staff members
A staff survey (results provided in Survey Results), as well as an energy audit have been
undertaken.
The results of the energy audit are as follows:
Actions implemented:
Replaced halogen downlights with energy efficient downlights and transformers.
Connected to natural gas, converting to an energy source with one-third of the greenhouse
gas emissions of electricity from coal
Replace electric storage hot water heater with instant solar hot water
Replaced air conditioner with a more efficient inverter unit.
All of the interventions cost a total of $4,800.
Prior to energy audit:
Annual energy bill: $2,415 a year

Annual greenhouse emissions: 18 tonnes a year
Six months later:
Annual energy bill: $2,275 a year
Annual greenhouse emissions: 14.3 tonnes a year
One year later:
Annual energy bill: $1,800 a year
Annual greenhouse emissions: 10.2 tonnes a year
Note: Four new staff members were employed in the last six months may account for increase.
Energy targets were not adjusted to account for the new staff.
Question.1. Develop a sustainability implementation report.
You are required to review the results of the staff survey and the energy statistics provided.
Based on your review, develop a short report that outlines:
Analysis of staff survey results and achievements against targets (see Appendix.1.)
Analysis of energy audit data and achievements against targets
Recommendations for additional actions that need to be taken based on the data above.
Recommend new efficiency targets
Summary of the success of the sustainability policy and procedures based on analysis.
Updates to the company’s Sustainability Policy and Procedures to account for
recommended improvements.

by changing employees' habits towards frugality as well as by using more
cutting-edge technology
f) Updates to sustainability policy and procedure to account for recommended improvements.
The following adjustments to the sustainability policy and procedure are possible:
