Role play as a key stakeholder in Wesfarmers
Background information
Wesfarmers is found to be a diversified corporation that has grown into one of Australia's largest
listed companies. The headquarter is situated in Western Australia and includes many important
business operations such as home improvement and outdoor living, office supplies, apparel and
general merchandise, energy and fertilizers, health, beauty and wellbeing, etc. It is found to be
one of the largest employers in Australia. They have approximately 484000 as a shareholder
base. The main objective of this companies to provide a satisfactory return to its shareholder.
The situation
In this role play, I am playing a role as a stakeholder in the success or otherwise of response
commitment towards ethical sourcing in modern slavery policy and reconciliation action plan.
The current situation of the company is to achieve the objective and their commitment should
be accomplished. It is not new that corporate social responsibility becoming one of the most
important and necessary activities. CSR is found to be fully filled by each and every organisation
because it becomes to need of society as well as people. In order to achieve the organisational
goals and objectives, a company should not forget that there are some responsibilities towards
society and this is the reason that waste farmers are focusing on eliminating modern slavery as it
becomes very tough. For the purpose of removing and dedicating modern slavery in today's
environment, they are focusing on an application of important policy which name is ethical
sourcing and modern slavery policy. Every day the situation of the natural environment is getting
worse and this is the main reason that they are required to take the necessary course of action.
Wesfarmers is continuously focusing on social development and for that purpose they are
investing and important policies which help to improve the economy and society. There is a
demand for immediate action towards the achievement of economic and societal development.
Current issue
There are many issues that identify by stakeholders in the corporate in which one of the
important issues is modern slavery. Slavery defines as the duty performed by people under
8 | P a g e

pressure. It is important to respect and promote human rights and also eradicate modern
slavery. The reason behind this is it is continuously growing and becomes a complex problem.
This can be tackled only with the help of collective commitment and responsibility. As a
stakeholder, it becomes necessary for every person to fulfil their commitment towards the
common goal. Modern slavery is really very bad for society as the individuals are exploited by
others for any purpose such as personal or commercial gain. It is illegal and covers a wide range
of abuse and exploitation which includes domestic servitude, organ harvesting, forced labour
and criminal exploitation. It is also found in Australia that Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders
are found to be known as indigenous Australians. In Australia, the people are separated into two
different cultures and on the basis of that scenario, they get unfair. It is an important and
fundamental right for every person to get equal rights and in order to solve this issue, the
Wesfarmers are required to take the necessary course of action.
Solution
After identifying and understanding the issue, the company took the right action for the
purpose of removing all types of inequalities. They also do this because they know it is an
important part of corporate social responsibility. There are two important documents found
in which they take immediate action.
Ethical sourcing and modern slavery policy
2022 elevate reconciliation action plan
These are important documents on which Wesfarmers are focused as they are moving towards
sustainability. It is important to understand that sustainable behaviour should be present in each
and every organisation as only companies are able to fulfil corporate social responsibility.
Ethical sourcing and modern slavery policy
It is important to understand that businesses are required to remove modern slavery from
society because it is continuously growing and becomes a complex problem. For that purpose,
Wesfarmers is focusing on the application of this policy which can be tackled with the help of
collective commitment and responsibility. If the policies are breached then they will take quick
and practical action.
2022 elevate reconciliation action plan
It is found to be an important action plan that focuses on formal commitment to reconciliation
and represents their first elevate RAP. It has five important core areas which include career
progression, sustainable employment, community partnerships, celebrating Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander cultures and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander procurement.
These are the two important actions taken by Wesfarmers and now they require to consult and
communicate with relevant stakeholders to ensure CSR objectives and policy align with
organisational goals. In addition to this, they also require to negotiate with stakeholders to
integrate CSR practices into policies.
2. Once the role play is performed you need to review the operations of Wesfarmers for the two (2)
documents over the past twelve (12) months, from the outcomes of the role play. In your review,
make sure to detail the following:
I. Processes and procedures that were followed to conduct the review of corporate social
responsibility integration with all its stakeholders.
It is important to understand that reviewing CSR integration with all its stakeholder is necessary.
9 | P a g e
Document Page
It is very sure that integration of CSR is necessary with stakeholders because only companies are
able to full fill the CSR policy. In order to fulfil the corporate social responsibility of the
organisation they need to make sure that every stakeholder should understand their responsibility
because, without the involvement of stakeholders, it is not possible for an organisation to full fill
it. For that purpose, they are required to follow the procedure and process which helps them to
conduct a review of CSR integration with all its stakeholders. With the help of conducting a
review company able to ensure that all stay holders are integrated with their CSR policy. The
process is mentioned below:
Review the stakeholder engagement to check the reach of the target audience:
In order to review the corporate social responsibility integration with the stakeholders, it is
necessary to check whether the stakeholder engagement reaches the target audience or not.
Wesfarmers' stakeholders have their target which they are required to reach with the audience
which helps them to achieve the organisational goal and full fill the CSR policy. If a company is
fine that they reach the target audience then they can say that there is an integration between
stakeholders and corporate social responsibility. It is the responsibility of the organisation that
the stakeholders should actively play a role in the process of full filling corporate social
responsibility.
The clarity in the message:
It is important for an organisation to make sure that there should be a clear message conveyed
to the stakeholders that what needs to be performed in the organisation and what are their
rules and how they will fulfil corporate social responsibility. They should be clear about their
duties that how they contribute to achieving a sustainable organisation by full filling corporate
social responsibility.
Review the response:
The company is required to take feedback to check the response and review them so that they
are able to identify the involvement of stakeholders in corporate social responsibility. It is
necessary to make sure that each and every stakeholder are integrated their goals with
corporate social responsibility. For that purpose, the company is required to take feedback from
outsiders as well as internal stakeholders which helps them to review the response.

Achievement of objective:

of the objective is found to be an important tool in which the company requires to check
whether their company is achieving the objective or not. It provides a clear indication that the
company get successful in the integration of CSR with stakeholders or not.
Requirement of adjustment:
If the company found any requirement for adjustment then they can do this. It helps them to
make the situation right and achieve the organisational goals and objectives.
II. Strategies that were used to evaluate CSR against organisational sustainability objectives.
Evaluation of corporate social responsibility against organisation sustainability objective is very
important because there are many organisations which are not doing actually any sustainable
activity but they come under the organisation that full fill the corporate social responsibility.
This is the reason that company is required to evaluate a CSR strategy. There are some
important strategies are mentioned below that helps an organisation evaluate CSR against
sustainability objective:
Promotion of healthy and inclusive workplace culture: It is found to be one of the
important strategies which help an organisation to review whether their CSR is able to
fulfil the sustainable object or not. Sustainability is not only limited to the use of
products which provide less harm to the environment as it also includes the health and
safety of employees and ensuring an inclusive workplace. So company requires to review
the healthy and inclusive workplace culture.
Designing of goals with measurable impact: This is also found to be an important
strategy in which socially responsible organisation requires to set measurable goals so
that they can easily check and keep the organisation accountable to stakeholders as well
as themselves.
III. Recommended improvements to CSR policy and practices.
11 | P a g e
Document Page
IV. There are some recommendations mentioned below that help to improve a CSR
strategy:
V. The first recommendation is to be clear and transparent. It is important to
understand for every organisation they are required to be very clear and transparent
in front of their stakeholders whether they are internal or external. That means they
should not still have any relevant information which is necessary to know the
stakeholders because it is unfair.
VI. It is also recommended that the company requires to understand an important
concept which includes learning, responding and improving. This is found to be an
important mantra for success. It is necessary to understand the need to learn from
the environment how the activities are going on and how they should be performed.
After learning they are required to respond and then improve their activities
accordingly.
