related to the hazards identification (Pescud, et. al., 2015). By this, we can analyze the harm
that occurs due to the hazards.
Risk control is the process to control the risks after they assessed. This includes the actions
taking to eliminate health and safety risks. When the risk cannot be eliminated when the
control measures are used to manage the risk for the safety of the workers.
Question8 Explain the purpose of the hierarchy of control and each of the options
available from most effective to least effective. Provide an example for each.
The hierarchy of hazard control is a proper system that used to decrease the hazards occurs
at the workplace. This system is mainly used by many of the organisations to control the
hazards. This hierarchy includes many factors which are discussed below-
Elimination
This includes the purpose to physically remove the hazard. It is the most effective control
use to control the hazards. Example- this control is used if the workers work at the height
above the ground so this is used to eliminate the working at height.
Substitution
It is also the second most effective hazard control. It involves replacing the things to produce
a hazard (Kim, et. al., 2016). It is similar to elimination that eliminates something that does
not produce a hazard. Example- Replace lead-based paint with titanium white
Engineering controls
These controls are used to control the hazards. They are used to eliminate hazards but
isolate the people from hazards.
Administrative controls
These controls are used to change the way of doing work. Example- employee training and
warning labels.
Personal protective equipment
PPE includes gloves, nomex, respirators, safety glasses etc. PPE is the least effective
means of controlling hazards because of the high potential for damage to render PPE
ineffective.
