Running Head: CASE STUDY
John, faces serious key issues when it comes to managing his time while at work. He
constantly procrastinates what he is supposed to do and is forced to work overtime. With
procrastination, one dreads doing the work and brings a feeling of guilt for not starting. At work,
John is taking too much in terms of jobs and does what he is not required to do. Having too many
projects and commitments leads to poor performance, low morale and stress.
With too much workload, John forgets about a report that he was to do earlier. This 9is a
key issue in time management since every piece of work should be clearly spelt out. This results
in late submissions of projects. In order for John to be more effective with his time, a to do list
should be developed. The to do list is quite important when it comes to prioritizing one’s work.
When dealing with large projects, an action program is highly recommended to manage the
work. Action programs are basically “industrial strength” versions of To Do Lists (Michael
Bungay, 2018)
Learning to say no to projects intended for other employees will also be quite helpful.
This reduces one’s workload and enables you to concentrate on the important issues. This will in
turn reduce the stress that may be caused by doing their work while also saving time. John needs
to develop a list of all the projects and their intended deadlines. By putting the deadlines down,
he can constantly check on the most important issues and work on them. This goes a long way in
fulfilling the purpose one has been assigned to perform in an organization.
For John to meet the set time frame of a project he should break it down and tackle one
issue at a time. The project should be done in smaller steps and have a clear time estimate for
each step. There should also be a clearly defined outcome put in place for the project. This
makes it possible for one to meet the set objective and thus allowing a person to meet the set
deadline. To meet the set objective, the defined steps should be followed one by one. One should

not worry about the next step unless the current step is perfectly worked on. In order for John to
manage the store efficiently, wide range of tools and systems should be put into use. The tools
and systems will serve different purposes but save time and makes one more productive The
tools include:
Toggle tool can be used for time tracking instead of depending on spreadsheets. With this
tool one can check the amount of time an employee spends on a given project (Dipton Parmer,
2016). It is thus easy for an employee to focus on the projects that earn more profit to the
company saving them more time. This tools are important in that it enables a person to block any
distraction making the employees more productive. One does not need to check on employees
accessing different sites during work time as they are temporarily blocked.
John should also be strict with all the employees and set out clear defined penalties for
any wrong done. The employees must arrive to work at the required time and must be ready to
face the consequences of breaching this rule. When recruiting employees, an interview should
be conducted so that people are employed on merit. This will go a long way in acquiring the best
service from the employees. John can set up a meeting with the manager and together they can
set up the employee goals and objectives. The set goals may either be short or long term and
must be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound. There should also be a goal
alignment strategy put in place. By meeting with the manager personally, all issues that need
discussion will be directly addressed.
Providing performance feedback to the employees either individually or in groups is also
important. This can be done through awarding prizes to the best performing employees of the
company. Those who are underperforming can either be demoted, sacked or given a warning to
improve their performance. This warning should be done through personal meetings with the

employee. With this in place, each employee will work hard to meet the objectives set by the
store.
Stress is one of the things hindering John from performing his role effectively. John can
decide to ask the store for a leave so as to clearly understand the reason behind his stress. He can
also seek assistance from his friend who used to work with him on how to make the store better.
After discovering the source of stress, the necessary changes should be incorporate the business.
In order for John to identify personal learning, he should seek help from his friend who
used to work with him as an assistant manager. He can use the things his friend uses so that they
can be in the same level when it comes to customer satisfaction. Clients are also an important
part of any organization. Getting feedback from them enables him make the necessary changes
and ensure constant supply of the products
To reduce stress resulting from work overload, one can be advised to take short breaks.
This breaks will offer very big health benefits to the individual. One can even decide to go
outside for a few minutes or even fill a water bottle. Laughing plays a key role in reducing stress.
When laughing, a strong bond is created between workmates and eases one’s tension (Robert
Half, 2017)
One can also decide to seek for help if the work is becoming too much. In order for the
manager to give one assistance, it is advisable to speak up. You can also come up with solutions
to the problem, and assist the company in decision making. In order for a person to limit work
stress affecting family member’s strict measures should be taken. Asking for time off will make
one happier and also increase the relationship with family members. If this is hard, spending
some weekends with the family will ease the stress. Waking up really early also matters as one
can spend some time with the family. Eating breakfast at home will show how willing you are to

spend time with the family. It is also good if a different person assists in the projects especially
those that have a long time frame.
A person separated from the partner and spends more time at work can be advised to visit
a doctor. Being unhappy can make one do bad things either to oneself or other people. Mental
support offered by doctors will go a long way in restoring the mental state. Visiting the
psychiatrist with family members will also be good as they will offer support. Managing
development needs; beau procrastinates work given to him and is always in a hurry to go home.
This has made him leave without finishing some documents that are quite important to the
organization. Beau lacks confidence in himself even though the organization completely trusts
him. This can lead to poor performance especially when dealing with the accounting section.
Beau can attend training sessions in order for him to boost his morale. Having full
information of what is required in the accounting sector will make him work better without any
worries. Having action plans will also enable him finish intended projects in time before leaving
the work area.
