Budget
What is the central goal of a budget?
A budget is a financial plan organized to depict expenses against income. The main
purpose of a budget is to provide a formidable forecast of future revenue and expenses. A budget
ensures that a comparison is possible between the expected revenues, expenses and the actual
figures. Budgets provide a reliable guideline ensuring that money never goes to waste1.
What issues and processes are important to create a budget?
The budget allows an individual, a group, an organization or even a country to keep track
of its expenditures and forecast on its future money transactions. There are issues to consider
when creating a budget. For instance:
a) The source of income – if you are an individual, are you employed, self-employed or
what is the source of your money?
b) The frequency of these incomes – How often do you receive incomes; weekly, monthly
or annually?
c) Spending –The scarcity of money as a resource and the ease to spend it brings the need
for budgeting2. Before you include spending on your budget, one has to make sure that
the list of wants is made in order of priority. Items or services that are of high priority are
allocated budget before luxuries and other tertiary needs.
However, even the best-planned budget may fail due to reasons like emergency occurrence. For
instance, a person might get sick and may be forced to alter the budget.
