Burberry, various situations can arise when day to day business operations and managerial
activities are performed (Thanasekaran, CommVault Systems Inc, 2019). In this regard, leaders
and managers are required to apply different theories and concepts for achieving better
performance within a business enterprise. Some of the situations which has arisen in Burberry
and the managers and leaders role in this regard are elaborated as follows-
Conflicts- In a large business sector like Burberry, there are large number of workers that
work towards achieving common business goals. But each of these employees have personal
desires and needs which can give birth to conflicts between workers. The reason behind these
conflicts are poor management system, lack of communication, unfair treatment, inadequate
training and development programmes, and so on. Leaders and managers of Burberry plays a
significant role for resolving conflicts in business functions and operations.
In order to deal with following circumstance, manager of this enterprise elaborates
responsibilities and job roles of workers for reducing confusion which will reduce the chances of
conflicts. Here, leader's responsibility is to develop an appropriate communication channel to
give necessary information to its workers which will give an opportunity to workforce to put
their opinions. The role played by leader in this context is to develop an effective channel of
communication for providing relevant information to workers which helps the employees in
sharing their views and opinions (Zijm, H and et. al., 2019). This will help to establish effective
coordination between interest of an organisation and individual which will result in reducing the
chances of conflicts in an organisation. Leaders of Burberry help in providing guidance and train
its workforce for reducing conflicts among employees. Manager of Burberry can utilise
behavioural management theory for understanding the behaviour and interest of workers so that
conflicts can be resolved. Leaders can utilise the situational leadership approach for resolving
conflicts in order to provide accurate description about every situation which makes it easy to
understand conflicts reason so that appropriate solutions can be made.
Implementation of change- Whenever any kind of change made in a business enterprise,
it helps in bringing up competitive strength in an organisation. Implementing a change is
determined as a complex procedure that includes appropriate analysation of merits of changes,
developing an effective strategy of communication, and providing adequate training and
development programmes to workforce.
Document Page
In Burberry at the time of implementation of changes, both leaders and managers plays a
significant role. Manger of this enterprise has the responsibility to analyse the overall benefits of
changes for this organisation and decide the workflow for implementing a change. Manager of
Burberry can use Scientific management theory to improve labour's productivity and efficiency
for properly implementing a change. In establishing an effective channel of communication,
leaders plays a significant role to motivate workers by providing them training and development
programmes (Le and et. al., 2019). In this context, Burberry's leader is using system leadership
theory for reducing the level of complexity by appropriately defining flow of changes and
developing a condition that provide high productivity level.
P3.
Leadership can be defined as an approach or style to provide direction, implementation of
plans, and motivate people in an organisation towards achieving business goals and objectives. It
includes implicit and explicit actions that are performed by a leader (Davidson and Olsen III,
United Parcel Service of America Inc, 2019). There are different leadership's approaches and
style which are used by Burberry's leader in different situations-
Situational Approach- In this leadership approach, leaders acts as per the situation and
development level of workforce of an organisation. It is considered as an effective form of
leadership as it adapts the needs and requirements of a team. Burberry uses this approach when
its managers are required to bring certain changes in its approaches in order to fit into employees
level of efficiency to provide them motivation and inspiration. It has certain advantages and
disadvantages as follows-
Strengths Weaknesses
This form of leadership is flexible in nature
and it do not form up specific set of rules that
are required to followed by each worker of an
organisation (Nainar, Pignataro and Kumar,
Cisco Technology Inc, 2019). It generates a
comfortable environment to workers by taking
care of their needs and desires.
This approach pays attention towards the
immediate needs and not on the long term
needs and requirements. It does not focus upon
development level of relationship between
leaders and workers.

Systems leadership theory- This leadership approach helps leaders of an organisation for
developing such circumstances in which different levels people work productively as per their
capability and potential (Walthers and et. al, 2019). It is utilised by Burberry for creating best
models for formulating strategy of an organisation, system designing and other social processes
by using principles about behaviour and attitude of individuals for influencing them towards
achieving organisational objectives.
Strengths Weaknesses
It enhances the adaptability of an organisation
towards changes taking place in a business
environment. It focuses upon both individual
as well as organisational goals of an
organisation.
This approach of leadership is not always
practical and it can delay in decision making
procedure. Moreover, this theory is not
appropriate in case of small scale enterprises.
Contingency leadership theory- It determines that the leader's effectiveness is contingent states
that effectiveness of a leader is contingent upon the way in which the style of leadership
matches to the situation. In this leadership approach, leader of Burberry first analyse a specific
situation to motivate and inspire employees in accordance with the present conditions (Dai and
Tayur, 2019).
Strengths Weaknesses
This leadership approach is dynamic and it
helps in allowing the managers in changing as
per the situations arising in a business entity. It
also helps the managers in enhancing their
decision making and leadership skills.
This theory of leadership is complex in nature
and it is reactive in nature as sometimes
handling of various situations becomes tough
task for managers of an enterprise (Li and et.
al., 2019).
