Executive Summary
The following report is aimed at managing the project and help in implementing the project
management plan. The case scenario is given to Burnaby Hospital. After the evaluation and
inspection, it was concluded through the government study that renovating the hospital is
expensive. The better option is to relocate the hospital to a new location which would be
more cost effective and feasible. The government has decided that Burnaby General hospital
will be constructed at the corner of Willingdon and Canada Way. The new hospital must be
built considering the need of the hour and in the estimated budget and time.
The project details of new hospitals are as follows:
Clearance of new location and site and preparing for the construction of the new building.
Instalments of water, gas, electricity, sewer system and enhancement of sidewalks and
roadways.
Construction and building of hospital infrastructure, roofs, walls, interiors and helipad and
instalment of electrical and plumbing appliance.
Instalment of all the equipment of health care
Purchasing of the furniture required for the hospital including medical or non- medical
equipment.

1 Project Description
Burnaby Hospital was founded by the local people aims at providing care facilities like
gynaecology, urology, surgery, and many other facilities to the other people. As it was built
in the year 1943, and the only upgrade took place in 1978, there is a huge requirement for the
renovation but as inspected by the government studies renovation will be more expensive and
hence reallocating to the new location will be more cost-effective. It provides 24-hour
emergency facilities contributing to around 61,000 patients yearly in the emergency
department. Hence the requirement of more advanced facilities and services are needed and
the government decides to reallocate the hospital which will improve the health services.
2 Project purpose
The reallocation of the project will lead to the enhancement of the patient experience and will
help to increase the impact in the health sector. Government with the help of Fraser Health
Authority raised a plan to reallocate the hospital increasing the capacity of bed to 500 from
295 beds. Burnaby Hospital is considered as one of the busiest hospitals in the area and the
new project will aim at upgrade of emergency department especially in the mental health
department, expansion of diagnostic and surgical services.
3 Project Scope Statement
The new project is expected to get completed in the coming 3 years with the total cost
estimation ranging from $ 517 million to $ 630 million. Increasing bed capacity from 295
beds to 500 beds. The existing hospital as 49615 sq. of the area and in the first expansion it
will lead to increase the area by 47505 sq. and adding 26 beds and the second phase will add
around 84,230sq with 179 beds. Hence the project is estimated to complete by 2020. It is
expected that the demographic of Burnaby will increase by 18 % up to 2024.

Before demolishing the old site all the medical machines and equipment must be transferred
to the safe zone. Areas around Canada way and Willingdon must be purchased for utilities

wastage, construction waste and noise should be taken into care. Planning, furnishing,
designing should be done in accordance with the project timeline and budget.
