Subject: Analysis of the Bachelor of Commerce core units data
Dear Claudia,
This mail is sent on the basis of your request to understand the cohort of the students, their
performance in various core units as well as their performance on various other activities
such as their attendance. The analysis conducted will hopefully be helpful to understand
whether the institution is in the right track to reach its strategic goal.
From the analysis, it has been observed that the average scores for all the 8 core units is
68.52. From the data provided on the scores, it has also been observed that 50 percent of the
students have secured above 68.63. This indicates that higher number of students have
secured higher than the average score. Two students have also been observed to have scored
very less.
It has been the belief of the University Board that the performance of the students in the Core
Unit 4 (Business Analysis) is not different across gender. From the analysis, it has been
observed that there has not been much of difference in the scores secured across gender.
However, there has been one male student who have secured much less than the average
score.
The next interest of the university board was to determine whether the proportion of the
student origin differs across gender. It has been observed that the proportion of local students
are 68% and the proportion of local female students is 31% out of all the students. There is
not much difference in the proportion of the origin of the students across gender.

Further, as mentioned, it has been the belief of some of the board members that the
attendance of the students has been a major factor in affecting the grades of the students.
From the analysis, it has been seen that the higher the attendance, the higher the grades.
Though, it has been observed that most of the students have average attendance. On the other
hand, it has also been observed that the highest number of high attendance students fall under
the High Distinction grade category. Thus, it can be said that the higher the attendance, the
higher the grades. The lectures and the tutorials does have a positive impact on the grades.
The more the students have attended the lectures and the tutorials, the higher the grades they
will acquire.
From further analysis, it has also been observed that there is a positive relationship between
the number of core unit 4 scores and the number of attendances. The relationship between the
two attributes is not very strong. 15% of the variability in the Core unit 4 scores can be
estimated with the help of the number of attendances. On the other hand, the relationship
between the attendance in tutorial and lectures are both positive, but the relationship between
tutorial attendance and core unit 4 scores are stronger than the relationship between lecture
attendance and core unit 4 scores.
I hope all the information required has been covered in this mail.
Sincerely,
Sam Mannix
