Introduction
Business communication is an integral aspect of everyday life within organisation. There is a
host of communications that takes place within an organisation for daily interactions amongst
various stakeholder groups (Broadbent, 2013). Communication is used to deliver ideas,
thoughts, information, data and also for interacting. Any possible barriers in communication
needs to be overcome for establishing appropriate successful strategy in communication. The
scope of the current discussion covers three aspects, one a critical incident from organisation,
second is relevance to business and third is regarding business communication skills. All
relevant incidence are analysed using self-reflection and analysis (Miller, 2014). Insights
regarding intercultural communications in work based set up is also provided.
Week 2 The critical incident
In a workbased setting a critical incident experience in poor communication is regarding
manager communicating verbally to a new employee regarding job role. This experience had
been as an observer employee in organisational life. While joining organisation employees
are generally provided insights regarding the rules, regulations, standards and etiquettes, also
regarding specific organisational culture (Bambacas, 2008). As a new employee is not aware
regarding the various aspects of the organisational culture and work set-up, it is expected that
he be provided written communication documents as well as orally communication. Post such
poor verbal communication where the manager explained the employee in jargons, there was
poor results from the employee. The employee due to such poor communications was unable
to understand his role in the organisation and perform his duties (Walker, 2014). There were
several mistakes committed by him and errors were too many. As a results of such poor
communication, the employee started getting poor appraisal as he was unclear regarding his
roles and responsibilities in the company.
I felt extremely bad for the employee as he was my colleague. He could have easily
performed in a better manner but could not due to the poor communication of instruction
provided to him (Beebe, 2009). He could not approach the manager regarding his job roles as

the manager was out on his leave. This left him frustrated and he was left with no choices but
to give up striving to perform better.
This form of poor communication could easily be improved by the manager, by means of
better and clear communication techniques (Carey, 2008). If only the manager could have
provided a written price of document to the employee regarding his roles and responsibilities,
the easily the challenge from poor communication could be overcome. Such poor
communication can lead to greater challenges in future for the organisation, hence should
have been resolved on a priority basis.
Week 3 Relevance to business
Dialogic communication is a negotiated exchange of ideas and opinions. Communication
that, I have experienced in the past is a normal exchange of ideas and information (Crossman,
2011). Previous communications at workplace, social life, university, home, country have
been normal exchange of information or ideas. However, in case of dialogic communication
opinion are negotiated and exchanged to establish point of view. This form of communication
is different from other forms of communication as it does aim to establish something.
Within organisation, it is integral to promote dialogue from a business perspective to promote
negotiation of ideas (Eder, 2007). A concept or perspective within an organisation for
overcoming challenges is achieved through brainstorming sessions that can deliver solutions,
which is done through dialogic communications. Through negotiations in dialogic
communications brainstorming sessions can represent a variable set of ideas, and then can
establish them in organisations. Without negotiation of ideas in teams an appropriate or
suitable solution from varied sets of opinions cannot be established. Thus, organisations
practices dialogic communication for establishing new and innovative processes or ideas for
arriving at a solution to a problem (DeVito, 2007). As dialogic communication arises from
two key words namely, dialogue and logic. A dialogic communication is able to establish
relationships within theories or logic without any preconditions, or by fully understanding
others.

Week 5 Your business communication skills
Intercultural communication is steadily gaining immense importance in global scenario.
Development of intercultural communication skills in work-based settings has been
thoroughly taught in the course (DiSanza, 2016). The course encompasses diverse and
knowledge and skills so as to enable development of the concept related to intercultural
communication setting. As this is relatively a new field of study, however with multiple case
studies and theories in intercultural communication, concepts could be well understood.
I have gained tremendous inputs in knowledge and skills in intercultural communication from
this course. I feel I will be able to apply my learned intercultural communication skills learnt
in my course in the industry. With these insights will able me to apply communication skills
in work based settings. While communicating with people from varied cultures in the future, I
will aim to analyse their cultural aspects. Cultural communication aspects in verbal and non-
verbal communication will need to be clearly understood. Such insights will allow me to
maintain etiquettes in intercultural communications. In intercultural communications, a
positive approach towards listening will enhance effectiveness and efficiency. Further
intercultural communication suffers from various barriers that needs to be overcome. In
varied linguistic and cultural communication settings an effective communication by building
a communicative relationship needs to be established. It encompasses a varied range of
manifestations of human behaviour. Analysing and understanding relevant political,
economic, social, professional and institutional settings will enable effectiveness in
communication techniques. As intercultural communication includes concepts as well as
competencies and active possession by individual of qualities will provide effectiveness.
Individuals needs to learn intercultural communication skills due to increasing diversity in
businesses arising from diverse stakeholder groups as customers, employees, shareholders.
With globalisation there has been immense intermingling of individuals from diverse ethnic
groups. With such diversity, congruence is possible only if an individual is able to overcome
relevant challenges posed by intercultural communication. By gaining adequate insights into
a cultures ethnicity and diversity it is possible to overcome challenges and extend its benefits
for the purpose of application. There are various significant outcomes in businesses for

with immense learning from this course to apply the relevant knowledge.
Conclusion
Importance of business communication cannot be overemphasized in daily life. In business
organisations, communication has a large role to play that can render and impact
effectiveness of businesses. Any challenge in business communication needs to be overcome
by any means whatsoever. Prior to determining reasons for any particular issue, there needs
to be analysis of communication techniques and tools used. Training within organisations
with respect to effective communication techniques can render efficiency overall business
processes and create sustainability. Thus, organisations needs to evaluate effective tools and
techniques in communications for proper transformation of business processes. Intercultural
communication is a relevant importance in businesses today as globalisation has increased
immensely. Customers, employees and other stakeholders have origin from various countries
and origins, thus, it is integral that intercultural communication is studied and understood.
this course has provided immense insights into the topic and provided relevant inputs for
applying its concepts.
