Introduction:
Communication is the process of transferring ideas, information and data between masses.
For a business to work efficiently and flawlessly it is necessary for the concerned
organisation to have a fair and effective mode of communication among the workers and
employees. The management and the executives are expected to produce a workplace where
there is a transparent communicating area and a simple yet advanced medium. The
organisation should be able to introduce ideas which help to motivate and support the
employees which eventually increase the work efficiency (Adekola and Sergi 2016).
Tesco Plc being a retail organisation there is a greater need to install a advanced medium of
communication in the system. Tesco is a UK based company which conducts business all
over the globe and clear and open medium of communication between the team and the
employees is mandatory to have a stable and progressive business. Effective modes of
communication will lead to a better work environment, increases the efficiency of the work
setting, will provide motivation to the employees and more importantly will provide a
transparent network of communication in the system of the organisation (De Maio et
al .,2016).

Discuss the role of effective communication within management.
Effective communication can be defined as transfer of information and data between
individuals and organisations. A transparent medium of communication is necessary for
every organisation or company for better efficiency in work. The management of any
company is bound to certain roles and functions on which the system works. One such role is
to form a firm medium of communication between the executives and the employees. It is
necessary for a management to build up a strong mode of communication for the perfect
functioning of the company or organisation. Effective communication among the members
and employees of a system leads to a better workplace.

confusion and disturbance within the workplace is bound to occur which eventually reduces
the efficiency of the work.

firm and effective team. Co operation among the workers will eventually produce a better and
efficient workforce. It is the management which works on the factors necessary and ideas
which should be implemented by the team for a better work environment. I witnessed regular
brief and discussion that the executives and the managers provided us so that we had a better
understanding of the work (Korschun et al ., 2014). Frequent meetings and group discussions
on company matter and product details helped me understand the company policies and
procedures which in turn helped me to work efficiently.
Communication between the executive and management department along with the
employees is needed to make serious and important decisions on company issues and
projects. The participation of employees in the strategic planning of promotion and
development of products makes the network between the management and the subordinates
more transparent and strong (Taskov and Mitreva 2015).
Good leadership qualities include performance, the zeal to adapt, to lead but most importantly
to understand the employees and deal with their issues eventually. I was a part of a team
where my team leader used to have discussions on a regular basis about the issues we have
within the company or the changes the company needs to make with respect to the benefits of
the employees.
An effective mode of communication among the team members or the whole company where
there is no biasness or misbehaviour with the subordinates and the workers will provide a
kind of moral support to the employees and the workers and this will eventually motivate
them to work with better efficiency. For any company to thrive there needs to be a positive
ambience present in the work setting. A just and supportive management department will
help motivate the employees and make them believe in the ideas and theories of the company.
The management department of Tesco has a open medium of communication system which
the management follows in order to gain maximum efficiency and work output from the
employees. There were certain situations where my co worker was having a issue with the
structure of the product she was working with and questioned the management regarding the
doubts, in these kinds of situation verbal or face to face communication is effective the most.
The management cleared her issues and were open to her ideas which were later used for the
development of the product (Geppert et al .,2016).

Impact of different methods of communication within a business and managerial
context
Communication begins with a person initiating a conversation with the other. The process of
communication can be explained as the act of sharing messages, ideas or information with
one another (Berger, 2015). Communication is a two way process, first being the initiation of
the information and the other being accepting or receiving. It involves a constant flow of
messages or data. Organisations prefer methods of communication which are easy to deliver,
time saving and have an effective impact. With the advancement of time, all organisations are
looking for more efficient ways of communication to ensure productivity at work (Hatch,
2018).
The organisation focused upon in this journal, Tesco, UK, prefers to use email, instant
messaging, video conferencing and other efficient ways of business communication to
communicate in its corporate environment to increase productivity and efficiency at work. I
have observed through my research that if the correct method is not selected for a particular
type of communication, it may prove to be a waste of resources and time. This journal further
will shed light on the different methods of communication and the impacts they have in the
business and managerial context:
Direct Verbal Communication
Direct verbal or face-to-face communication is one of the most popular methods. It is one of
the oldest methods of communication and remains a widely accepted one. It helps the person
to make the other understand the importance or the level of urgency of the message being
shared or communicated. The speaker can use facial expression and body language while
communicating, which becomes an added advantage and helps in communication. The
impact of it is great and has always proved to be effective. It is still considered as one of the
best methods because of its direct interaction and simplicity.
Indirect Verbal Communication
Indirect verbal communication involves telephone calls and teleconferencing. This method is
considered by my observation as one of the most easiest and time efficient methods of
business communication. It helps to save time and also be able to make one’s self clear to the
person to whom the information or message is being is shared. It eradicates the need of being
present at any meeting or discussion and still be a part of it. It enables members of the

organisation to save on travel expenses as well as valuable time and get the work done
efficiently saving on precious resources.
Written Communication
This method of business communication is more explanatory and can be used as valuable
proofs for future references. It consists of notices, letters, hand-outs, circulars, memos and
everything which is written on a paper. This method is selected to reach out to a large number
of members within an organisation. The instruments of written communication are posted on
common platforms so that everyone can view them. It is generally used in performing
technical tasks in the business organisation, which need clear information (Reason, 2016). It
also used in business assignments where attaching some additional information is required.
The legal actions taken and the related communication done within the business environment
are all in the written form.
Emails
Emails changed the way the corporate structures viewed business communication. It helped
increased the efficiency and productivity by shortening the time taken by previous methods
and ease of delivering a message. It has become a globally accepted and practiced method of
communication at work and has proved to be extremely reliable with time. Emails are much
faster than traditional posts and can be sent and received instantly. These help in increasing
the organisations business, efficiency and readiness. Emails revolutionised business
communication and changed the way how business data or information were shared and
exchanged previously.
Video Calling
The video calling or video conferencing method of business conference can be done at any
time without the need of all members to be present at the site of discussion and still be able to
view each other. It connects people who need to communicate face to face with each other in
real time but being far apart. Videoconferencing method of business communication helps in
removing the time and distance barriers to get the work done at any point of time as required
(Hair et al., 2015). This further leads to increased productivity and achieving organisational
goals. Videoconferencing also helps cut down expenditure of overseas business meetings and
can be done from anywhere with ease.

Other New Methods of Communication
The latest web based applications enable people at work to communicate instantly. An
example of such method is the instant messaging (IM). IMs help in saving time which have
would been wasted in conveying short but important messages. Many other applications are
available today which allow us to share data and information instantly. The corporate
organisation of the current times is incorporating the use of such technology to make their
business operations efficient and save on valuable resources.
Conclusion:
Business communication is a complex function which when delivered effectively and
efficiently can prove to be rewarding for all corporate organisations. The communications
between departments within an organisation need to choose the most suitable way of
communication to achieve clarity amongst the members and teams (Laudon and Laudon,
2016). I have tried to assimilate the learning and the knowledge I have acquired about
business communication. All the critical areas of the role of business communication and the
methods and their impacts involved are explained in this journal. It also sheds light on the
contribution of the technology of the modern times towards business communication and its
application.
