INTRODUCTION
Business communication means the communication which occurs at workplace. Effective
business communication can lead to organizational success. Business united is the college at
London. This report will discuss various organizational communication theory. Further it will
discuss that what are the barriers of communication in business united. Study will also discuss
strategies to overcome the barriers.
MAIN BODY
Theories of organizational communication
Organizational communication:
Organizational communication refers to the communication which takes place within the
company. Effective communication should be there in organization so that company's objectives
can be achieved. Communication barriers can lead to conflicts and which can hinder
performance of workforce (Rosenberry and Vicker, 2017). Proper Organizational
communication can lead to employee engagement, collaboration, trust, cooperation which help in
smooth business functioning. Effective communication is helpful in decreasing misunderstanding
between employees. Employee gets motivated by getting good experience and which helps in
increasing their productivity. Employees start helping each other and which builds trust within
them at workplace.
Some theories of organization communications are as follows:
Communication accommodation theory:
Communication accommodation theory refers to that when communication style is
adjusted by people for others. Changes can be made in verbal or non-verbal communication both.
Divergence is used by the groups who have strong ethic whereas convergence are used by those
people who are powerless and always think about person's comfort with whom they are speaking
with.
Adaptive structuration communication theory:
It refers that rules which are created by organization and resources which are used by
them are said to be structures. Further social systems are formed form the structures which is
helpful in developing life. Decision making is affected from structure's quality.
Social exchange theory:

This theory says that it is the economic exchange in the relationships (Mowlaee and et.al.,
2017). Relations in business united between students and teachers can be improved by fulfilling
each other's interest. Here self-interest is not considered as selfish thing but rather it is seen that
relationships are build with it.
Cultivation theory:
Cultivation theory does argument that media is shaping reality of the person. Nowadays
people are taking information from media only rather than having personal experience with
them. Views and ideas of people are getting impacted from the sources. Viewer believes that
what is showed, and they do not imagine world beyond that.
Deployment communication theory:
The theory believes that without communication there should be no development. If
business united have to attain success then effective communication is must. Communication
barrier will take birth because of lack of communication and that is not good for any
organization.
Barriers of communication at business united
Due to covid 19 students are facing issues in communication some of them are:
technical barrier:
Students at business united have to face problem because of poor wifi. Due to this students miss
out impotent part of lectures and due to that they did not understand that part of lecture which is
taught in the future (Shin and Hecht, 2017). Many professors are using old computer system, so
it takes time in loading pages. It is the biggest barrier when it comes to online teaching because
without proper technical support students will not understand the lecture.
Physical barrier:
Due to constant looking at screen while studying students now are feeling uncomfortable. Some
students even got headaches, eye irritation and backaches. Students are not able to concentrate
like earlier they were doing. Daily sitting for so many hours in front of computers are damaging
health of students. Students are also not able to see gestures and body language of professors
which is also making communication less effective. Face to face communication is more
effective as compare to effective communication.
Emotional barriers:

Students of business united now are not getting chance to interact with their batch mates. Often
listening to long lectures of teachers, this had became boring for students. They are getting
feeling of isolation and also demotivated because in online class having discussion with teachers
are not easy. Due to this students are not able to focus on their studies and also reducing
concentration of students.
Noise barriers:
Some students interrupt lecture in short interval which facilitates difficult to have focus on
lecture. As a result time is wasted on irrelevant discussion rather than study material or course.
Noise also break concentration from topic and which decrease interest from it.
Cultural barriers:
Now students cannot communicate in their native language with their friends. Emotions are not
properly expressed by them.
Barrier of jargon:
Sometimes teacher uses such technical or unfamiliar words which does not understand by
students which can lead to confusion within students. In online class students also cannot ask
again and again and thus confusion never get solved (Zerfass and et.al., 2018). Students, they can
face difficulty in exams if the concepts are not cleared in lectures.
Psychological barrier:
The mind of sender and receiver is different which affect the meaning of communication. It is
possible in online class that what teacher wanted to convey to their students but Students are not
understood actual meaning of it. It can further lead to poor retention by students. It causes
communication failure.
Personal barrier:
Some students don't have confidence in the lecturers that what teachers are teaching is right.
Those students do not concentrate in class because they believe that teacher is teaching wrong. It
increases difficulty in online class because in virtual class teacher cannot see that every student is
concentrating on the class or not.
Strategies to overcome the barriers
Chose tone of voice:
Tone of voice plays vital role in improvising communication. Teachers of college should start
using soft tone when they are teaching. Teachers should try making lecture interesting so that

interest of students can be maintained. During online class due to lack of physical presence
students have start loosing interest but if teachers make efforts to make learning interesting then
students interest can be regained.
Feedbacks:
Teachers should request their students to provide feedback. This practice will help teachers to
know that in what area they are lacking and by making improvements, lectures can be made

will not go directly to lecturer and give them suggestions but if feedbacks were asked then they
will definitely give.
Practice empathy:
Teachers should understand feelings and emotions of students. As students cannot get classroom
teaching feeling. It is virtual teaching and students will take time to adjust in this. Teachers
should teach small portion every day rather to complete major part of course. This will help
students to understand much better and students will also get time to get comfortable with online
learning.
Limit distractions:
Effective communication can take place only if there is limited distractions. Students who are
making unnecessary noise in class teacher should warn such students because due to them others
are not able to concentrate in class (Seyed Naghavi, Poorbehroozan and GhorbanAlizadeh,
2020). Teacher should make sure that there should be no irrelevant discussion which will hinder
course work.
Follow-up communication:
If communication want to make effective then teachers should try to know problems associated
with communication system. In that manner teachers can find out that what is better formal
communication or informal communication.
Improvising technical errors:
College should provide new laptops to their teachers so that problem which takes place in page
loading can be avoided. Wifi problems should also be fixed so that students does not miss out
important part of lectures.
Give them break:

Teachers should give break to the students so that students will not face constant problems of
headache, eye irritation, back pain etc. nowadays these problems are very common because of
online studies. So if break is given then students can relax in break time and will also helpful in
increasing concentration power.
Conduct interactive sessions:
Students are missing their face to face classes so teachers of business united should start
conducting interactive sessions. So that students will not feel isolated through online classes
(Ramlan and et.al., 2018). Small session will motivate students, and they will enjoy online
classes rather considering as a burden.
Recommendations
It is recommended that teachers should strengthen relationships with students. They
should work on maintaining good relations with students. Teachers of business united should
also use such tools which can encourage student to connect with the class. If students has
performed good in class then teachers should appreciate them and that will motivate other
students to work hard. Conduct activities which can facilitate interactions between teachers and
students. Creating workbooks which can help students in learning lessons. In the middle of class
teacher should show funny content which can help in lightening the mood of students.
CONCLUSION
Through this report it can be concluded that effective communication is important
everywhere whether it is educational institutions or the organization. Report has discussed
organizational communication theory which are Communication accommodation theory,
Adaptive structuration communication theory etc. study has also evaluated communication
barriers which are technical barrier, physical barrier, noise barrier etc. Strategies are identified in
the report so that communication barriers can be overcome.
