Business communication can be defined as the process of information sharing to the people
associated with the business. To cater to the needs of all those people who are interested in
busienss information, there are mainly two forms of business communication. The forms are
given below:
Internal communication External communication
Internal communication is the form of communication in which the information is shared the
people inside the organization. It is important that all the decisions taken by the management are
conveyed to the employees and workers. At the same time, it is also crucial that the progress of
production must be regularly transferred to the manager (Goldman, et. al., 2015). In internal
communication, there are two ways in which the information flows.
Upward communication: In the upward communication, the information flows form
employees to the top level management.
Downward communication: Downward communication is the one in which the
information is transferred to the employees by the top level managers.
There are certain characteristics of internal business communication which are as follows:
Informal means: Generally, the internal communication in an organization takes place by
the informal modes of communication. The information is exchanged through oral
communication. This is because; oral communication is a faster way of communication,
and the feedback can also be taken at the same time. For example, to resolve a conflict at
the workplace, it is important to communicate with the associated parties and talk to them
personally.
Simple and economic: To carry out the process of internal communication, simple and
cost-effective modes of communication are chosen. The reason behind is that by the
simple method of communication, every person in the organization can understand the
information and make effective use of the information. For example, to share the
information about the changes in the rules of incentives provided to the employees, the
management can circulate notice or draft e-mails to the employees. These are simple and
cost-effective methods (Pavan, 2019).
