1BUSINESS COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Question 1: Summary
The Herald reported that the new strategy of the Australian government is to negotiate and buy a
huge amount of oil from the American government to avoid exposure to a major crisis.
Question 2: Summary
The NSW government is trying to encourage people to buy the houses rather than renting it so
that they can have saved for a lifetime. The challenge for the government is to manage the high
cost of the houses by encouraging developers to build new houses so that the supply and demand
can be balanced.
Question 3: Summary
The idea of critical thinking in the context of business is getting popularity in recent times. The
importance of critical thinking skills for the students passing from these business schools can be
understood if one evaluates its necessity. The findings of the Wall Street Journal states that most
of the managers think that critical thinking and creativity is at the heart of being successful in
any business sector. Another study by Kaplan University confirms this by stating that written
communication and critical thinking are the most important skills for the future workforce. Even
to get the employment sorted, the business candidates need to master their written
communication and critical thinking skills. The method of teaching CT in business schools is
being examined in this study.
The research in critical thinking shows that CT has its root in two academic disciplines. One of
them is in psychology and philosophy. Other than these two approaches, the educational
approach is also in fashion. According to Lai, all three approaches have some similarities and
differences in itself. The similarities are the elements like inferring, analysing, decision making

and evaluating. There is no clear definition of critical thinking. One of the most appropriate
definition is that CT is the systematic formation or evaluation of the beliefs and statements
depending on rational standards.
The education provided by the universities to the business students does not meet the
requirements of the employers. The companies often suggest what they want in the curriculum so
that the students can achieve the kind of critical thinking abilities needed. But most of the time,
their inputs are ignored in the design of courses. The researches show that the institutions must
work in collaboration with the real organisations to understand the nature of the CT required in
real companies. The suggestions of the managers and other personalities associated with the
organisations need to be incorporated in the course works.
The study has been done using the survey as a tool, and the sample was 32 faculties from higher
educational institutes. The questions were open-ended, and the data analysis has been done using
the content analysis method.
The research shows that there are huge necessity to review the standard of teaching CT skills in
business schools. The schools must review the CT literature to get an idea of how the CT courses
should be constructed.
