Common challenges and barriers to effective communication
There are several barriers which occurs in communication. They highly impact on overall communication process and message. So, barriers are as follows :
Language barriers- It is most common barrier in communication. As not everyone speaks same language so it becomes difficult to understand language when it is different. Also, at
same workplace there might be employees who speak different language. So, it acts as barrier in communication.
Psychological barrier- These are some barriers which may occur due to people. Some people might have fear, speech disorder, depression, etc. Thus, in these conditions it becomes
difficult to interact with one another. Hence, it directly impacts on message sent and delivered.
Emotional barrier- In this a person may not be comfortable to communicate. It might be due to emotion such as anger, frustration, etc. that affect on communication.
Physical barrier- They are those barriers like noise, closed rooms, ineffective use of tool, etc. that might act as barrier in communication.
Cultural – In this there are those barriers such as caste, creed, colour, etc. due to which people are not able to communicate with each other effectively. The different culture highly
effects on interacting with one another.
Organisational structure – In organisation sometimes structure might not be flexible. Moreover, there might not be enough transparency due to which lack of info is passed to
employees.
Effective strategies for overcoming communication barriers
In order to overcome barriers, there are different effective strategies that can be used. The use of strategy depends on type of barrier. It is as follows
Use of simple language – It is common strategy that can be used. Here, there might be use of simple and clear words. Besides, jargons and ambiguous words should not be used. It
will be helpful in communicating properly.
Eliminate difference in perception- The organisation should eliminate difference in perception. They must hire right people for right job. Also, training program can be organised to
clear all policies of organisation to staff.
Avoid info overload- There should not be overload information that is shared with staff. So, info must be short and specific.
Take feedback – It is important to take feedback from other person to whom communication is done. From that it will be ensured that info is delivered to receiver or not. In this way
effective communication is done.
Importance of cultural awareness
In every organisation there are diversified people working. They all belong to different caste, creed, colour, etc. Cultural awareness refers to ability of understanding each
other culture, ethics, values etc and sharing it. It is necessary to do so that cultural differences are identified and reduced. Besides, it leads to cross culture interaction and developing
bond with one another. This results in effective communication and understanding perception of other people. In addition, when employees are aware it they determine human
behaviour easily. Thus, it creates a positive environment within organisation. Hence, there are less conflicts and more transparency in communication.
