Memorandum
TO: Supervisor Kim Johnson
FROM: Dedan Thompson
DATE: 10th April 2018
SUBJECT: How the business can best utilize social networking to create competitive advantages
for the company
Today, the social media plays a critical role in organizations by helping bring businesses and
customers together in modern ways (Hatter, n.d.). Thus, the firm can use the social media and
social networking in various ways to create competitive advantage for itself.
First, the company should begin by utilizing social media as a way to achieve better engagements
with its clientele. Today, social networking allows the business to differentiate its goods and
services that the company offers. As such, it helps the business differentiate the customer
experiences that the company offers (“Ten Ways,” n.d.). Thus, this way the firm will be able to
build new relationships with their social media base and engage better with its customers,
thereby gaining a significant advantage over its competitors in the market.
Secondly, the company can obtain a competitive advantage over its rivals through the use of
crowd sourcing. As such, it should augment knowledge management and web self service
systems with new sources of information (“Ten Ways,” n.d.). In turn, this will ensure
augmentation and integration of information across every channel of information, thereby
gaining an upper hand over its competitors.
Finally, the company may capitalize on the multiple advantages of social networking to help it
gain an upper hand over rival companies in the industry. These advantages include the improved
understanding of unmet needs of the target market, reduced switching costs, and lower call
centre costs through faster client engagement on social media platforms (Gabrielle, 2011). In
turn, this reduces the overall cost of production and helps the firm gain a competitive advantage
over other firms in the industry.
