AI Summary
This business consulting project report focuses on developing a routing plan for Qantas Airlines to address market challenges and increase market share. The report provides recommendations for improving existing routes, particularly the Sydney to Cairns, Sydney to Darwin, and Sydney to Melbourne routes, while also suggesting an increase in aircraft availability. The project includes a detailed project management timeline, scope, resource requirements, and budget, outlining tasks from project initiation to delivery. The report also addresses project limitations, such as budget constraints and airport capacity, and proposes measurement and evaluation metrics, including customer feedback and safety standards. Finally, the report emphasizes the importance of review and follow-up processes to ensure the plan's success, including addressing issues like low passenger numbers and flight delays.

3. Recommendation:
3.1 Routing:
Currently, the Qantas airline of Australia is having various problems in their business
as they are facing challenges in the market due to increased market competition. There are
various organization which are providing better facility to the customers with an attractive
price tag. It has been assessed that routing can help Qantas airlines to overcome these
situations. Also, it will help the Qantas airlines to maintain and increase the market share in
the domestic market of Australia. Thus here some recommendation will be provided for
proper routing of the Qantas Australia.
The routes are having a big potential for the Qantas Australia; thus this it is
recommended to Qantas Australia to implement routing plan. In these aspects, some
recommendation is described below for the proper implementation of the routing plan.
In this aspects forecasting of the passenger, demand is very much important for
identification of the most important route and for that demand forecasting has been
recommended here. Demand forecasting is very much important as the airlines always
want to know the average number of passengers on the regular flight for a particular
route. This data can be gathered by the airlines industry from the airline industry
itself. Also, while considering an airline route, one of the most important aspects also
need to be considered which is the route cost. While the cost of the route is very much
high, then it will be not helpful for the airlines. So a perfect route and measurable
amount of fare are recommended in this case. While focusing on these identified
routes, Qantas must ensure that maximum satisfaction is provided to the customers
(Milosevic & Martinelli, 2016).

In this case, it is recommended to Qantas to focus on their current airline route and
improving them for gaining a better market share.
The main important air routes which need to be improved by the Qantas airline are the
airlines which serve Cairns city through the Cairns airport. This is the focus city for
Qantas airline due to the huge amount of tourism. This airport is the nearest airport
from the “Great Barrier Reef” due to the high amount of passengers travel on this
route. It has been assessed that most of the international tourist passengers prefers
Sydney airport when they are visiting to Australia and due to this Sydney airport is
one of the busiest airport also. After landing at Sydney they decides their further
plans. Thus it is recommended to Qantas to improve their route of Sydney to Cairns.
With the Cairns airport, another focus airport for the Qantas is Darwin airport. So that
in this case Qantas also need to focus on the routes of Sydney to Darwin as this also
attracts a large number of travellers as this is the nearest airport from the Kakadu
national park. Another important route for the Qantas is the Sydney to Melbourne
route. As Australia is famous for its cricket Qantas needs to improve this route as
Melbourne city has one of the most important cricket ground which is the Melbourne
Cricket Ground. This also attracts a high amount of tourists so this route need to be
improved. Thus the main three routes which need to be improved are the Sydney to
Cairns route, Sydney to Darwin route and Sydney to Melbourne route.
Another recommendation in this case for the Qantas airline is that they need to
increase their availability of the aircraft for the identified route of above. By
increasing the number of flights it can provide a reliable network of transportation and
will be able to handle more number of passengers (Kerzner, 2017). This will increase
the trust factor of the Qantas airline. Thus their market share will also increase.

Project Scope: Current project scope of this project is improving existing routes for the
Qantas airlines. For improving the most important existing routes first Qantas airline need to
purchase new some additional aeroplanes to increase frequency of flight services in the
identified important routes, and this is also under the scope of the project. Also, within this
project, the management needs to communicate with the airport authorities and air traffic
controllers for approval of additional flights in the three identified routes.
Required Resources and Budget of the Project:
Required Resource Budget
New Airplanes (Airbus A320) (6 pcs) AUD 900 million (Cost AUD 150
million/piece)
Hiring new Pilots AUD 157,500/Pilot/Year

The cost of the airlines is determined from the official website of the Airbus. Other
fees are estimated from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia.
6. Limitations:
In this project, there are several types of limitations, which can be faced due to project
sensitivities and risks. The main risk that is related to this project is its cost. For improving
the operational routes and starting new aircraft in this routes high amount of budget is
required. This is one of the prior limitation of the project as investing this huge amount of
money is currently not possible for the Qantas airlines, this project needs to be executed in
several of phases (Nicholas & Steyn, 2017). Thus the project will take a vast amount of time
for completion. This is one of the major limitations of the project.
As Qantas airline increasing the overall number of flights for all the three identified
routes in this segment they can again face a limitation (Kerzner, 2018). As the number of
flights will be increased the Qantas airline need to schedule all of its aeroplanes for arrival
and departure. It is not ensured that the airport authorities will be able to manage all of the
aircraft of Qantas due to the pressure of other airlines (Kerzner, & Kerzner, 2017). Thus the
Qantas airline may need to drop many of the aircraft due to the factor of extreme pressure on
the airports and on the air traffic control system. This is creating a risk as their invested
money on the routes will be not in operational condition.
8. Measurement and Evaluation:
In this aspect of the project, the project needs to be measured and evaluated properly.
In this aspect, perfect measurement is required for the determination of the quality of
achievement. High level of plan is required for the measurement purpose of initiated
planning. Here for the measurement purposes, some metrics need to be chosen carefully
(Larson & Gray, 2017). One of the important metrics is indicators. Here the indicators have

been chosen as it can detect the changes easily in the system. In this case for measuring the
project in terms of quality feedback program can be initiated which will be provided by the
customers who will be using the services of Qantas airlines. Through the feedback of the
customers, the Qantas can determine their new services on those three identified routes in
terms of quality. If overall positive feedback is gathered from the customer's side, then the
initiated improvements on the important airline routes are quite successful in terms of quality
achievement (Harrison & Lock, 2017). If negative feedback is gathered then very likely
organization need to revise their plans.
Evaluation of the project is also very much important in this aspect. The project
evaluation is considered as determining the quality achievement considering various
standards. Achieving the goal of the project is not always considered as a successful
implementation of the project (Fleming & Koppelman, 2016). This project implementation
also needs to satisfy various standards. While improving those three identified airline routes,
the main standard which need to be maintained is the safety of the passenger. This means it
needs to be measured how much safety is provided by the Qantas to the passengers while
they are increasing the frequency of the airlines. For this assessment history of the Qantas
need to be analysed, and current operations of this organization need to measure in terms of
safety precautions they follow (Young, 2016).
9. Review and Follow Up:
Review and follow up is also very much important aspects of the projects. It is one of
the final stages of the project which successfully leads the project towards a succession of the
project. Thus in this case of the Qantas airline review and the follow up is also very much
important (Heagney, 2016). As the Qantas airlines are improving three most important routes

delay, the cause of the delay needs to be reviewed. If it is occurring due to the congestion in
the air traffic then most likely the Qantas airline need to optimise their flight schedule by
proper follow up so that they can avoid the delay due to the traffic congestion.
