Environmental Sustainability in Business (2010)
Environmental Sustainability is the term defined for processes designed to align the business
functions in a manner as to not to exploit the environment. The video titled as ‘Environment
sustainability in Business’ represents interviews and excerpts from the interaction with various
business leaders, leading the reforms in Australia, for a better sustainable and more profitable
business solutions. The key idea behind the environmental sustainability in business is that the
greener approaches and techniques to reduce the carbon footprint of a business not only supports
the greener initiatives, but also reduces the overall business costs by alternative solutions, that
are beneficial for both environment and users (Laszlo, 2017).
These days various business leaders, especially in the Australian and Oceania region are moving
towards environment friendly approaches and business strategies. One of the reasons of the shift
towards more sustainable products is the changing consumer perception and rising demand of
eco-friendly products. For the moto-giant of Toyota, the market in Australian region is shifting
towards electric and hybrid models of fuel saving, showing deflection in purchase of Petro-
chemical vehicles. Similarly, other businesses are drifting from standard business practices and
investing in innovation, not only for saving resources but also saving money on production
(Evans, et al., 2017). The Chief Executive at Sustainability Victoria highlights the benefits of
harnessing eco-friendly benefits. The Owner of Ferguson Plarre Bakehouse, Ralph Plarre choose
alternative approaches to saving fuel costs and other small precautionary steps to bring down the
costs in business.
These days, the sustainability efforts are not only a PR mechanism, to raise clientele and increase
sales, but is also viewed as an effective cost reduction mechanism. With the analysis of many
businesses, the evidential fact that surfaced was that sustainable business practices can support
any business unit, irrespective of its size. To initiative with sustainable approaches, small steps
can be strategized to begin with and note the impact (Rauter & Jonker, 2017). Owner Ralph
Plarre exclaims that it is essential to monitor the spending to control it. Therefore, initial steps of
saving water, electricity, paper wastage reduction and similar resources can be begun with. To

attain higher ecological model, many consultant organizations, whether government or non-
government can be reached out to for help, advice and support. It is not only important but
essential for survival.
On an everyday basis, precautionary decisions and control can lead to saving a lot of cost and
can help in preventing exploitation of natural and derived resource. For example, turning off the
lights or powered systems like desktops etc., once the rooms or factories or offices are left, using
energy efficient bulbs and air conditioning systems, utilizing battery enriched systems like
laptops or consuming alternative energy sources like solar power of hybrid vehicles in
commutation.
Minimizing waste, reducing carbon footprint, maintaining ecological balance are is the primary
attention requiring external influence that cannot be ignored. Researches indicate that 25%
people generates 75% of the total waste produced in the country, that does not get degraded or
recycled easily (Svensson, 2015). The dumped waste at landfills not only pollutes environment
but creates hazardous living conditions for people around. Methods to harvest natural resources
and limiting the exploitation of limited resources whether water or any other is essential. Most
importantly it is the openness to change and adjust the living habits to be adaptable to energy
saving mechanism and controlling the activities that overall lead to exploitation and
irrecoverable damage.
