Need of Employee Motivation in Care Homes
Motivation refers to the ability to change the behavior of an individual, it is a drive that
compels the individual to act. It is believed that human behavior is the ultimate factor that
directs the actions towards achievement of goal in the environment. Motivation is a force that
is either with or is a part of external environment of a person that develops the feeling of
persistence and enthusiasm within them. Without presence of motivation in an individual,
he/she would not be able to implement any sort of work effectively as there needs to be some
sort of motivation within the person so as to implement any function. For instance, an
employee works with an organization either because they like the environment or have the
willing to earn (Merkel, Ruokolainen, and Holman 2019).
Thus, considering the importance of motivation in an employee in a care home, it is because

seeking their request. Working in care home is different from working in any other basic
organization because in such organizations, the employees work for their own good and
benefits for that, however, in care homes, the employees work to the benefit the people
present in the care home. It requires extra motivation to provide assistance to the people who
could not express their feelings themselves (Eldh, et. al., 2016).
If the employees are appropriately motivated in the business environment then they would
work more efficiently to achieve the organizational objectives and provide high degree of
satisfaction to the organization and people connected with it. Thus, it is necessary for the
employees to motivate themselves and for the organization to motivate the employees so that
they could deliver benefits to the old people and take proper care of them (Skippon, and
Chappell 2019).
Factors Affecting Motivation of Employee
Public service motivation theory is an attribute of the governmental and non-governmental
organization employment that clearly defines the reason why individuals need the desire to
serve the public and link their personal actions with the interest of overall public. This theory
states that motivation is important for individual who aim to pick their career in government
and non-profit segment despite of having career in several other more lucrative industries.
This type of motivation is used within the employees so as to help them to provide them
reward for implement good actions that support the people present in NGO setting (Ertas
2016). The concept of Public service motivation theory refers to the theory that works upon
aspiration bias as according to this type of motivation theory, the employee have generated
this willing to serve to the society and provide benefits to the people in the society(Ritz,
Brewer, and Neumann 2016).

Further, analyzing another motivation theory that affects the behavior of employees in care
homes, it should be noted that two factor theory of motivation explains that there arecertain
factors that motivate the employees while there are some factors present in the business
environment that creates high degree of dissatisfaction among the employees. According to
this theory of Hertzberg, these two factors are motivators and hygiene factors.
The motivators are the aspects that encourage the employees to work hard for the success of
the company; while hygiene factors are the aspects that do not encourage the employees to
work hard, instead it demotivates the behavior of the employees. The motivator factors
according to this theory include achievement, growth, responsibility, recognition,
advancement and work motivation. In the care homes of UK, it is crucial for the employees to
enjoy the work that they which means that they need to have work motivation (Andersson
2017).
Work motivation means the employees love the work that do, due to which this work
automatically motivates them to work more effectively for the success of the organization.
People in UK who love doing charity of taking care of others should be employed by care
homes in UK so that they do not need to generate work motivation within them. Fringe
benefits and promotion offered by the organization are just another thing that boost up the
morale the employees working in care homes. Promotion and other additional on the job
benefits helps the employees in working with the organization for long period of time as well.
Also, according to Maslow’s hierarchy need, monetary benefits appears to be on the first and
second segment of the need theory. Every person requires money and a suitable job to buy
food and shelter for themselves and family (Alfayad, and Arif 2017).
Therefore, it can be said that if the care homes provide optimum salary to the employees and

to work with motivation in the care homes. The environment of care homes should be light
and positive so that it spread positivity among the people living in those care homes. Thus,
even if the employees comes demotivated in organization or feel burdened, then also, the
organizational culture should bring hope and happiness in the behavior of employees and
they should develop the feeling of going to organization to enjoy and not just for work
(Alshmemri, Shahwan-Akl, and Maude 2017).
Recognition and responsibility are two other factors present in the organization that increases
the level of motivation of employees in the workplace environment care homes. These
aspects provide a reason to the people to stay with the care homes resulting in which they get
motivated while working in company. It should be noted that even if there are several other
factors in internal environment of care homes, but if the employees are provided adequate
level of responsibility for work and recognition, then they would not get time to think of any
negative factor connected with the organization (Bernstein 2018).
On the other hand, recognition in front of whole organization helps the employees to feel
connected with the process of the business. It should be considered that the business
functioning of care homes is different from that of other organizations present in UK
(Holmberg, Caro, and Sobis 2018). In care homes, the employees require to work whole
heartedly, then only they would be able to provide ultimate satisfaction to the old people

Ways to Motivate the Employees working in Care Homes
In this crucial era where negativity is spread in every corner of the world, it has become
important for the organizations to motivate the employees and for the employees to motivate
the older people that they are safe in the care home surroundings. Therefore, with the
increasing time period of shifts of the employees, the organization need to increase the
benefits of the employees as well. Below mentioned is the list of factors that the care homes
should implement in order to satisfy the employees and motivate them in the workplace
environment:
Change Working Conditions: the care homes need to change the working conditions
in which they are making the employees work in the business environment. The
environment should be changed in such a way that it provides regular motivation to
the employees to appear in the organization and work efficiently as well. Only
motivated employees could provide services to the organization by provide complete
use of efforts (Skippon, and Chappell 2019).
Increase Fringe Benefits: the company should provide appraisal to the employees on a
regular basis so as to keep them interested in business. This activity would make the
employees wait for the time when they would get additional benefits and hike in their
basic salaries. The company should also provide incentives and additional benefits to
the employees for putting additional efforts in the workplace. Many times employees
stay extra time in the care homes because of the need or perform additional shifts.
Thus, in such cases, the organization should provide additional monetary benefits to
the employees against their extra efforts laid for the care homes (Lawrence, et. al.,
2016).

long term career opportunities to them. Any employee would stay in the organization
if they see their future in that business, otherwise not. Therefore, the care homes also
need to provide long term growth objectives and vision to the employees so that they
could survive in the organization with a vision of growth.
This is not an exhaustive list as there are several other ways that could motivate the
employees in healthcare setting. Also, it should be considered that differ from employee to
employee for the factors that upraise their level of motivation in the healthcare setting as for
some people money is the biggest motivator however, for others it could be recognition in
business that could upraise their interest in workplace environment. Also, in case of
healthcare setting, it is crucial for the top level management to consider the efforts induced by
the employees and appreciate them effectively. Along with monetary benefits, the
management need to provide non-monetary benefits to the employees as well (Prowse,
Prowse, and Snook 2019).

Findings & Discussion
Through the thorough analysis of the research paper on the topic ‘motivation of employees in
UK home care environment’, it has been found out that motivation level of employees keeps
on fluctuating on the basis of their interest in the organization. Resulting in which, it has
become crucial for the UK care homes to take care of the interest of employees working in
the healthcare segment. It should be noted that in tough times like these, where the whole
world is fighting with the pandemic situation, the doctors have become superheros for the
whole world. Therefore, it is important to provide high degree of satisfaction to employees
working in care homes. The employees in care homes are working for more than their regular
shifts, due to which it becomes the duty of the professional to provide additional perks to the
employees working in care homes (Van der Heijden, et. al., 2019). This would help the older
people in UK to stay safe in their premises which can only be done if the employees are
highly motivated to work without any break for the satisfaction of their people.

Further, it should be noted that the review of literature evaluated that there are several ways
to motivate the interest of employees. Also, there are several other factors that demotivate the

the employees as it could definitely reduce their interest in the functions of the business.
Therefore, it is the duty of the organization to align the interest of employees with
organizational objectives and provide them several benefits as well. There are two theories
that are being evaluated in the given paper, these theories are two factor theory of Hertzberg
