INTRODUCTION
JB Hifi and Harvey Norman are two retailers working in the retail industry. The retail industry
of Australia is highly competitive in the electronics segment. JB Hifi is an Australian based retail
company which deals in consumer goods which include electronics, video games, Blu-rays,
DVD-CD. It is one the most successful companies in the industry and is growing with swift rate.
JB HI-FI has its head office at Chadstone shopping centre, Melbourne. The chain has 112 stores
all over Australia and New Zealand. It was founded in 1974 was John Barbuto in the suburb of
Melbourne and later sold it to Richard Bouris, David Rodd and Peter Castera in 1983. They grew
the chain of stores to 10 stores. It was recorded to be %150 million in the year 2000. They sold
the company into private equity and company had a name in Australian Stock exchange in
October 2003. The company started to deal in HI-FI equipments when the popularity of Vinyl
records declined in the year 1991 (McKenzie, 2010). Although with the revival of the records,
stores were again stocked with the Vinyl records. They also specialise in the import of CD from
US. The mission of the company is to deliver HI-Fi products and recorded music in their stores
in Australia and New Zealand at the lowest price possible. Harvey Norman is Australian based
multinational retail chain of electronic products, computers and communication products. The
company has 280 company owned and franchise stores in around the world. The company
started with a small store in 1961 which sold electronic products. It was opened by two salesman
Harvey and Norman. By the year 1979 the retail chain was the largest chain and had 42 stores.
It was worth $240 million by the same year. In the tear 1982 they bought a new shopping centre
for 3 million in Sydney. They made a listing on the Australian stock in 1987 and created. The
company opened superstores in Us and started to sell computers and furniture during the early
1990's. The company had a bonding with Apple and sold apple products in its stores until Apple
decided ot not sell products to Harvey and Norman. The mission of the company is to become
the leader delivery of retail products and services in the industry.
