THE IMPACT OF SMES ON THE ECONOMY
SMEs are the businesses which has less than 250 employees and the annual turnover of
less than €50 million and balance sheet total does not exceed €43 million. SMEs are
considered as the backbone of the economy as they increase growth and provides
employment opportunities. They help to create workforce of skilled and semi-skilled
labors who can support future industries and in business expansion. The stability of UK
economy relies on the employment and growth of businesses. Increase of these enterprises
have decrease the rate of unemployment of the country. In 2021, there were around 5.58
million private businesses in UK and 99.9% were SMEs. These enterprises have given
monetary value to UK economy and has increased the GDP rate. Currently the rate of
employment due to SMEs in UK is around 16.3 million which is 60% of all jobs in UK. In
past 5 years these organizations have created over 2 million job opportunities.
