3.Discussing the statement,'' In the UK both men and women are treated equally in the
workplace''.
From the critical analysis of various studies it can be stated that the UK provide equal
status to all its citizen irrespective if their gender. The country encourage equality among men
and women through employing various rules and regulation. There are some laws designed by
the UK government in relation to the man and women with a motive to treated them equally in
the work place.
Sex discrimination Act 1975- Discrimination is treated someone less favorably then
compared to other. This act in UK, refers that, discriminate between man and women is
unlawful. All men and women have rights, to not to be discriminated against any work. Many
places, company allows or ignore sexual harassment in the work place and also apply rules at an
unfair disadvantage on men and women (Rosemann and vom Brocke, 2015). There should be
equal terms and conditions for the men and women of UK in selection process, as well as in
training, promotions and benefits. The government of UK designed this act with a motive to
protect the employees of a company from direct and indirect discrimination
Equality act 2010- This act protect from the discrimination of men and women in the
work place. In the work place, all employees men and women are treated as equally in all aspect
of their work. If applicants are treated unfairly in the selection, then this is an unlawful
discrimination. In this act all are equal for the job, they are protected by the age, disability, race,
sex, religion. Pays and benefits are to be provided equally to both men and women in their work
place (Rey-Martí, Porcar and Mas-Tur, 2015). For example, if one candidate is of female and
another is male, than according to this act, both this candidate are treated equally for the job.
Other activities like, training, promotion, appraisal etc, these all are to be provided equally to
them.
Anti discrimination act 1977- In this respect, government has generated this law and the
objective of this act was to provide equal employment opportunities to both the genders. With
this act government of UK aims at protecting the employees against various kinds of
discrimination at work place. According, to this act, equal pay, working conditions must be

provided to both men and women (Pollack and Adler, 2016). In addition to this, employment
terms and conditions should also be same for both male and female employees.
Equal pay act 1970- With an increase in the discrimination between the man and
woman, this law is designed to solve the problem for the female working at work place.
According to this act, all individual have right for the same pay and benefits. A person of the
oppostive gender is entitle to receive the same benefits (Harris, Gibson and Taylor, 2015).
Maternity leave and pay regulations 1975- This measures is taken by the government
of UK, where women is entitled to take statutory leave and pay, which can be up to 12 months.
They are guaranteed an entitlement to return to their own job, during their leave period with the
same terms and conditions under which they left.
More than two third of the employees are women and they earn a lot less than man. Since
the equal pay act come into force, but still men earn more than the women. On 100th anniversary
of the international woman's day, men earn and take home higher salary compared to women in
370 of the UK's 426 job classifications (Bawden and Rogers, 2011). It is examined that only in
53 categories, women earn more than men. Recently, in work place, the presence of the women
is growing steadily. In journalism, women are increasing rapidly, but still they have longer way
to go for considering equal to men.
In recent times, many countries made progress in achieving gender quality. As they are
considered both as an equal in the work place. At many places, men are still encountered more
challenges compared to women counterparts. Real gender equality in the workplace can only be
happen when both are enjoying the same reward, opportunities. All human being have same right
to work as well as same opportunities. Business organization must strive for the removals of
barriers between men and women of half and equal participation in the work place. Equal
participation of men and women should also be apply in selection and recruitment process.
According to their qualification and competence, employment opportunities is to be provided to
them rather than gender difference (Fuchsberger, 2016). Moreover, regardless of gender, all the
workers in the work place are rewarded equal consideration in the evaluation and assessment of
their work. All are entitled to paid leave and retirement benefits and they also have equal right to
protection of health and safe working condition. The achievement of gender quality in the work
place is very important for the company as it affect the productivity of the business as well as of

the nation. It improves the productivity of the company, this is because of diversity of talent and
perspective in both men and women, leads in better decision making. Implementing those
decision will bring positive impact on the production of the organization (Foster, 2015).
The equal opportunities commission is the key institution responsible to the Minister for
equality, which is involved in the promotion and implementation of gender equality issues. The
main function of this equal opportunities commission is to set the gender equality agenda, to
investigate the companies where the inequalities between men ad women exist. They also handle
the cases related to equal pay act and sex determination act.
In number of ways, inequality still exists in the work place, Pregnancy Discrimination,
under which company accommodate the women with medial complications from Pregnancy. Pay
inequality, in which there is inequality in the pay of both men and women, man are earning more
compared to the women (Donnelly, 2015). Gender inequality has been very apparent among
work place, where women are treated inferior then man. There is a male dominant population in
the work places and female are getting less paid.
Th advantage of gender equality in the work place helps in creating the environment with
high morale, it also helps in developing a good reputation and with an equality, company can
recruit the top talent people whether an or women for their business. The another advantage of
the equality in the work place is, it helps the company in measuring the effectiveness of man and
women in their business (Cenere and et.al., 2015). They can also motive both of them to
contribute towards the company in a positive way.
