Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment solution addresses key concepts in business operations, including the definition and importance of strategy, the three levels of operations strategy (corporate, business, and functional), and factors influencing process type selection (quality, flexibility, and cost). It explains fixed position and process layouts. The solution also delves into manufacturing hardware technologies like CNC and robots, used to enhance production efficiency and product quality, and explores different types of operational information systems such as Transaction Processing Systems (TPS), Office Automation Systems (OAS), and Workflow Management Systems (WFMS).

ALLOCATED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.
2Explain the hardware technologies being used in manufacturing organisations.
Recently, hardware technologies are used to perform tasks in almost all sort of firm to
maximize the quality of their products and reduce the costs of production (What is
Manufacturing Technology?, 2017).
The hardware technologies that are being used in manufacturing organisations include CNC,
robot, AMH, FMC, FMS, CIM or CADCAM.
These are the tools that enable the production of all manufactured goods. These master tools
of the industry magnify the effort of individual workers and gives them the power to turn raw
materials into affordable and quality goods (Nyori and K’Obonyo, 2015).
For examples:
Material Removal – Drilling, grinding, electrical discharge machines (EDM), water jet
cutting equipment, and laser process equipment.
Material Forming Bending, joining, shearing.
Work Holding Chucks, fixtures, angle plates.
Material Handling Conveyors, robots, pallet changers, and bar feed equipment.
Automated Systems – Transfer machines.
3Explain the types of Operational Information Systems.
Transaction processing system (TPS) is a computer information system used for the
purpose of handling large amount of data for daily business transactions such as inventory
(Stair and Reynolds, 2013). The TPS eliminates the redundancy of necessary operational
transactions and reduces the time required for manual execution.
Office Automation System (OAS) analyses the information to convert data or operation data
in an effective way to further share it and formally spread it throughout the organization
(JOSEPH and Mohapatra, 2014).
Workflow Management System (WFMS) is a software system that looks into the
management of workloads and performs workflow execution in accordance with pre-defined
logic of the workflow in the system (Orr, 1999).
