INTRODUCTION
Communication plays vital role as it enable in sending and receiving of information. In
every company there is need to have proper and systematic communication so that data and info
is shared in effective way (Bivol, 2018). For that there are various types of communication
methods and process to be used. The use of tools depends on business requirements. For
example- e mail, telephone, etc. are some tools. It is important to develop an effective and proper
communication. Besides that, there is two types of communication that is formal and informal.
Any loophole in communication method should be identified and eliminated.
The report will lay emphasis of theories of communication. Moreover, it will be explained
about barriers of communication and what are strategies to overcome those barriers.
ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION
Communication is process of sending and receiving of data and information to one person to
another. Within entire process there is a sender and receiver along with a recipient. Generally, it
is a complex process which require a lot of planning and organising of things. Within entire
process there are various signs, symbols, etc. are used as well. Basically, verbal and no verbal
communication form used. In verbal oral and written form is used. But in non verbal signs,
symbols, etc. form is used (Braithwaite, Suter, and Floyd, 2017). It is important to develop an
effective and proper communication. This is because having a policy provide a framework that in
what way message is to be sent and delivered. Along with that, there is need to use an
appropriate channel and medium of communication as well. This is because channel helps in fast
and quick sending and receiving of message. However, the use of method on nature and type of
message to be shared. For example- for short message telephone is used whereas for long
message e mail is used.
It has been analysed that there is various types of theories which is used within organisation.
There use of theory depends on organisation needs. It is necessary to use theory so on basis of it
communication process is developed. Thus, it is mentioned as below :
Oral and written – this theory state that communication can be either oral or written. Here, oral
is by use of words, conversation, etc. by which info is shared. For example- pubic speech, radio,
TV, etc. and in written it means writing message in some language. For instance- newspaper,
books, letter, etc. in organisation.

Formal and informal communication- this theory state that formal communication means
following a structure to send message or communicate. There is a chain of command followed in
it. And informal means no chain of command followed as communication is done freely.
Actor network theory – It is a theory which state that both human and non human factors
influence success of technological innovation and scientific knowledge. Besides, theory sows
that how networks are formed and is useful in success of communication process. Furthermore, it
shows that no person is responsible for any advancement in it. Thus both actor and network is
require to accomplish outcomes.
Adaptive structuration theory – this theory state that groups and organisation form rules and
resources which is defined as structure (Downing, 2019). The structure form social system which
develop their own life. In addition, quality of structure impact on decision making. This is
because decision also affect on structure.
Agenda setting theory – the theory state that mass media organisation identify what people
consider news which is worth by taking decision to pay attention to news and story. In this
salience transfer term is used that refer to ability of media. Then, the media transfer agenda to
public in order to gain attention.
Cognitive dissonance theory – It is a psychological conflict that result in holding some
contradictory attitude and beliefs. So, theory state that person needs to look for balance in their
beliefs. Hence, to reduce dissonance one person will change his or her views or belief so that
their action are matched.
Two step flow theory- The theory revealed that informal social relationships had played a part in
modifying the manner in which individuals selected content from the media campaign. The study
also indicated that ideas often flowed from the radio and newspapers to opinion leaders and from
them to the less active sections of society (Ibekwe, 2020). Thus, informal social groups have
some degree of influence on people and mould the way they select media content and act on it.
Communication accommodation theory – The theory describe that people need to adjust their
communication style to others. It means that there is change in verbal and non verbal style done
either in divergence or convergence. Here, divergence is used to highlight identity of group that
are having strong ethnics. Whereas convergence is used by powerless individual with whom they
are speaking.

While doing communication there may occur various types of barriers which may impact
on message content. Alongside, due to barriers it may results in failure of entire communication
process. The barriers can also make message unclear by which it becomes difficult to interpret
and get clear meaning of message. Thus, the barriers which can occur in BusinessUnited
identified are as follows :
Emotional barriers- they are those barriers in which person is not able to express their emotions
in effective way (Kristjánsson, Salek, and Chiribella, 2019). So, a person is not able to speak or
communicate message properly.
Language barriers- It is a barrier in which there occurs language problem. Here, a person
speaking to another one may not be able understood language of another person. It is because
receiver may speak different language.
Psychological barriers- this is a barrier which occurs due to psychological state of communicator.
Hence, it influence message which is sent or received or perceived. This barrier entirely depends
on mental state of person. For example – anger, low self esteem, lack of confidence, etc. These
are some barriers which may influence message.
Physiological barrier- it is a barrier which may result from receiver physical state. The person
hearing or listening problem may act as physiological barrier in it. For instance – person having
reduced hearing or is not able to grasp conversation (Mayfield, Mayfield, and Walker, 2020).
Physical barriers- The barrier which may occur due to geographical distance between sender and
receiver. Here, this may be due to inappropriate use of channel, tools, technology used in it, etc.
Systematic barriers – it is a barrier which may occur due to inappropriate structure or system
within BusinessUnited. Hence, this leads to inappropriate sending and receiving of info through
various channels as there is lack of roles for communication. Hence, it leads to unclear sending
of info.
Attitudinal barriers- the barriers which arise due to change in behaviour and perception of people
to communicate in effective way. It may arise due to personal conflicts, poor management,
resistance to change, etc. (Rodriguez,2017)
Therefore, these are various barriers which exists in BusinessUnited. These highly impact
on overall communication process. Besides that, they affect flow of communication and sending
of message. In addition, message sent is unclear as well.

RECOMMENDATIONS
It is necessary for BusinessUnited to overcome barriers so that there is clear sending of
message and flow of data. For that there is need to develop effective strategies so that barriers are
overcome. Thus, it is defined as below :
The company can use various technological tools and equipment for communication
methods. In that they can use e mail, chat bots, messenger app, etc. by which it data and
info is shared confidentiality. It will enable in systematic sharing of message from one
person to another.
Here, BusinessUnited can give training to their staff so that they are able to speak
different language and is able to easily interact with one another. Also, they will
understand language and signs of person and it will overcome barriers of communication.
The organisation can monitor all communication process continuously so that there is no
barrier occurred within it (Waisbord, 2020). In that if there is any barrier that it can be
overcome or changes are made into it.
BusinessUnited can form a policy and communication process that needs to be followed
by entire organisation. Thus, it will ensure that all data and information is shared through
particular process. In this way barrier can be overcome easily.
CONCLUSION
From report it can be summarised that communication is a two way process of sending and
receiving of information from one person to another. Also, there are various theories of
communication such as actor network theory, adaptive structuration theory, agenda setting
theory, etc. that is applied. Moreover, there are various barriers of communication as well like
physical, language, psychological, etc. that exist within BusinessUnited. Besides, there are
various strategies that can be followed by company to overcome barriers such as use of
technology, giving training, etc.
