Calasanz School MN503 Internetworking Project: Network Infrastructure

This project report details the design and implementation of an IT infrastructure for Calasanz School, focusing on addressing challenges related to communication, printing, and web presence. Project scope
Calasanz School is a modern school located in Cucuta. You will agree with me that schools that perform
better in their results have impressed the deployment of IT Infrastructure in their schools. IT is taking over
every segment of education sector. In the recent past, many thought that IT was for business alone.
However, IT Infrastructure has demonstrated by itself that it can drive every sector of the economy. It is
good thing to announce that Calasanz School management has impressed the technology. The school
introduced partial IT infrastructure in the school, by the implementation of access of internet as a service
[1]. There are other IT infrastructure services that are important to Calasanz School. These services include
content management, web, and print, DNS, DHCP and messaging. In this task, we aim at implementing the
mentioned IT infrastructure services for the school. The task is planned to take 3 weeks beginning on 2nd
June 2019.
Challenges
It should be noted that having internet alone does not provide a solution to a number of challenges that are
faced by the Calasanz School. Internet service only offers access to the internet allowing both the students
to do their research and learn more in their areas of interest. This does not sort the issue of lack of an
official communication platform (email), does not sort the issue of having to purchase printers for every
employee and perhaps for each class room. In addition, it does not offer a solution to having client
computers which has information to be referenced to or to be worked on collaboratively by use of
applications such as excel. As if this is not enough, the school require to have a website that will be used for
the advertisement of the school. For sure, these challenges require to be addressed the soonest.
User-centric design concept
User-centric design refers to the development of a solution or a product bearing in mind who will be the
immediate user of the product. A product designed in a user centric design, makes the user to smile at it
and feel satisfied, hence urge to use it more and more. Indeed, TP-Link desired wireless network within
Calasanz School in User-centric approach. Having an interface that will filter out what you should access on
the basis of your logon to the Wi-Fi SSID is a feature that classifies this network design as user centric.
Additionally, the Wi-Fi is easier to control and monitor who is accessing the internet. This also confirmed by
one of the IT personnel. However, there is more that would have been done. Having wireless network
alone spanning the whole network at one point there may be challenges. Let’s say a there is a
videoconference ongoing within the school and wireless experiences interference from electricity, this
makes the conference to be terminated. This could be solved by use of Ethernet cable to access the
internet [2].

For us to implement this network design, we need an IP address, which will be host to uniquely identify
hosts on our network. We assume the ISP assigned IP address is 172.16.1.67/17. We subnet this network
address to fit into the said departments. Note that we are estimating the number users per subnet.

Outcomes
Having designed the above network, Calasazn School will find value for having IT infrastructure within its
premise. The school management will be able to communicate effectively by use of email and messaging
platform. In addition, the hustle of staff who do not have a printer on their desk seeking printing from

neighboring office will come to an end. Multipurpose Printers will be shared on the network and positioned
at strategic areas where users can access it with ease. Web service is another mile that the school will have
gone. Awareness of the school will be done via the web. Finally, the DNS and DHCP services on the network
will resolve computer IP addresses to computer names and computing nodes will be issued with IP
addresses automatically respectively.
Limitations
Our idea of hosting emails and web within our premise is not a brilliant idea. There are some benefits that
we will miss out because of hosting these services on our premise. For example the dynamic scaling feature
implemented by cloud computing where when services are have spiked up due to high demand, the elastic
feature avails the resources and when the demand goes down the resources in use are reduced minimizing
on cost. In addition, in-house hosted website will lack rich-media content and hence our website will
remain to look dull. The proposed solution is to take these services to the cloud [5].
Conclusion
In conclusion, IT infrastructure is the backbone to the continued smooth running of any educational
institution. Note that IT Infrastructure services such as email, print, DNS, messaging, IP telephony, file
storage and sharing are key to the school running processes. Therefore, Calasazn School has incorporate
these services in its operations.
