1IMMIGRATION POLICY IN CANADA
Introduction
The essay is focused towards analyzing immigration in Canada and the policies that are
present to control immigration. Currently the immigration policy in the country is quite lenient or
liberal. However, there is a significant threat for the rise of extremism and terrorism. This can
lead to problems that can be faced by genuine asylum seekers that are fleeing from conflict
situations in their countries.
The study considers the statement that the immigration policies of the country need to be
more cautions in the wake of the terrorist activities that have taken place across the world.
Historical Contexts
Historically the immigration system of Canada has been focused towards providing
people from various countries job opportunities in the Canadian economy. In the past people
from the Asian countries have immigrated and settled in the country. The majority were from
countries such as China, Philippines and India. The citizenship law historically came into being
in 1910 in which British subjects living in Canada were designated as citizens (Immigration,
2019). The Canadian policy has historically been focused towards providing immigrants with
safe and prosperous life in the country.
However, recently the country’s having an open door immigration policy on paper has
contributed to the influx of a large number of illegal immigrants. Canada has made the
immigration policies In essence, the immigration policy is focused greatly towards helping
people with strong educational and economic backgrounds.

Present Policies
The present legislation existing in regards to immigration in Canada concerning the
accommodation of refugees is the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. The department of
immigration, under the Trudeau government control the immigration policies and regulations
that are present in the country. The major problems has been associated with the open door
immigration policy that that country currently has. This enables a large number of immigrants to
enter the nation without proper background checks. Moreover, there are free passage areas
between the US and Canada that are being used by illegal immigrants to easily enter the country
(Casarico, Facchini and Frattini, 2015). The legislation has not been sufficient to stop this
problem. The policies for effective control are not in place and the major problem occurs in
regards to the policies being overly lenient. This impacts the prospects of the refugees for better
lives.
Future Implications
Firstly, an important thing is to consider the difference between genuine asylum seekers
and illegal immigrants. Secondly, the loopholes within the existing policies for immigration need
to be considered. Thirdly, there need to be stricter policies against the illegal immigrants. The
changes can be controlled by a stronger immigration vigilance teams in the country. The
prospects for changes are good as more illegal immigrants participating in extremist activities are
being caught.
Conclusion
Canada has shown great concern for the problems faced by refugees across the globe
recently. The country would need to improve their citizenship and immigration laws in order to
