1DIVERSITY AND CANADA
The aim of the paper is to analyze one of the social and political issues within the context
of Canada and the nuances of the same. This paper will be discussing the impact of the diversity
issue of Canada; this will be analyzed using the theoretical and practical understanding of the
same. Diversity is one of the buzzwords of the new century since it has been observed that
acceptance of diversity is one of the essences of the successful democracy.
The reason behind choosing this particular issue is that the acceptance and problem of
diversity is one of the most debated and discussed topic of the 21st century. One of the issues of
the Canadian politics is the concern of diversity within the context of the influx of refugees and
the attitude of tolerance (Schaeffer, 2016). What appealed to me about this topic is the growing
importance of the issue of diversity in the global context even though it did not have any
personal experience or reasons to pick. My reflection on this issue would be based on the
theoretical background and the inherent knowledge of the same and the perception I have
developed throughout.
In case of support of my reflection, it can be the viewed that Canadian liberal party would
be supportive of the view since it has been found that this particular party has progressive views
and attitude of tolerance towards issues like this. They have been favoring the entry of number of
refugees into the country and it can be expected that support will be given for this reasons.
It is to be noted that the issue of diversity is specifically important to the Canadian
context since there total percentage of diverse population present is 19.1% which is definitely
one of the largest of many countries with such diversity (Appelbaum et al., 2015). 65%b of the
total Canadians have some connection with overseas birth hence it is important to understand the
issue from the perspective of the large diversity it represents. In case of one of the policies to be

formulated, I would be implementing the Multiculturalism act that is already existing in the
country however the difference I would make would is to implement it with a difference and
assure there is no gap left which might the need for another new policy in place.
Democracy as a value is depended on the values of liberty, equality and fraternity. It can
be thus argued that diversity is associated with the issue of protection of equality and rights of
each individual in society. In case of democracy as a process, it is to be noted that the issue of
diversity is one of the pillars of all successful pillars of democratic countries. Countries like India
and Canada have developed the attitude of assimilation and amalgamation of large number of
diverse population within its own culture which is one of the reasons that practice peaceful
democratic process of the world (Wilkinson, 2018).
In case of any social issue arising it is always the voice of people that is presented at the n
national platform. There have been number of protests, demonstrations by people all around the
globe that have raised issues of social concern (Morgan et al., 2016). However frequent uprising
do not necessarily leads to fruitful results. Nonetheless, it cannot be argued that these protests are
meaningless since it is highlighting some of the concerns of people. Hence any peaceful method
of protests and demonstration is accepted and it is a sign of a true democracy. It has been argued
previously that dissent is one of the cornerstones of robust democracy and without dissent of
people democracy will no longer be voicing the opinion of the people (Morgan et al., 2016).
It has been previously noted that the Canadian media has not been sensitive to the cause
of diversity and it is has criticized that the media is extremely monolithic when it comes to the
media coverage of the issues like diversity (Beaman, 2015). Even though it has been highlighted
that race is not one of the serious concern for the people and the media, however there have been

number of instances where the Canadian media has been completely centered towards the
portrayal of the issues that re impacting the indigenous Canadian population and not the large of
refuges that the country has given shelter too. Hence it can be argued that the Canadian media is
partially restricted to the issue where racism has been subtle.
The issue of diversity impacts every aspects of the society starting from the tiniest unit of
family to the largest of a country. The significance of accepting diversity and the understanding
of mixing of people from different backgrounds impact the very process of socializations
(Schultz et al., 2017). This is also crucial to consider that culture heterogeneity is one of the most
important aspects of society where the people have equal choices and opportunities irrespective
of the diverse backgrounds (Wilkinson, 2018). The importance of understanding issues like this
as part of the social science subject helps us to understand the social and political, aspects at the
same time. This resents an overview of the structure of robust policy making (Morgan et al.,
2016). In case of family and individual, understanding the social aspects of diversity will enable
an attitude of acceptance, tolerance and acknowledgement of different people. Hence it can be
concluded that the social science constitutes one of the pillars of sound understanding of nuances
of the social issues.
This paper analyzed the issue of diversity within the context of Canada and it highlighted
the fact that acceptance of diversity and the understanding of issues that are both socially and
politically important is significant. However it is equally important to consider the fact that are
multiple dimension to one particular aspect and it is important for us to look into all the
perspectives.
