Alberta researchers look to artificial intelligence programs to predict
catastrophic wildfires.
The article by Bob Weber was published by The Canadian Press and later republished
in ‘The Globe and Mail’ on 17th of March, 2019. The article outlines the implementation of
artificial intelligence to combat the wildfires which turn out to be catastrophic at times. The
report also states that such an ambitious program is subject to around 150 academic
researches which would allow for the implementation of artificial intelligence to develop a
strategy to battle wildfires and their impacts. The report also claims that an anonymous
insurance company has developed a system that uses artificial intelligence to predict wild
fires. This would allow taking preventive measures before such conditions are predicted.
Monarch butterflies making a big comeback after being decimated in recent years
The article has been composed by Bob Weber and was published in The Globe and
Mail, published on 5th of February. The report states that there would be an increasing
migration of Monarch butterflies from Canada to United States in the winter. This is one of
the greatest natural migrations and is important for the health of the forests. The report states
that millions of Monarch butterflies migrate each year by travelling over 5000 kms and this
was receding recently. The report states that according one recent survey, the population of
the Monarch has grown 144 percent over 2017. This report provides hope for the restoration
of the Monarchs.
B.C. wildfires stoked by climate change, likely to become worse: study
The report was published In ‘The Globe and Mail’ by Jeff Lewis on 8th January, 2019. The
report states about the wildfire that had led to forced evacuation in British Columbia. The
report also states that it was the outcome of climate change and a record 1.2 million hectares

of land had been affected due to the fire. The report quotes the studies of Megan Kirchmeier-
Young at the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) research centre. It claims
that the impact would be 7 to eleven times greater without human influence. The report also
states that the incident brought about a significant change regarding public policies and
disaster related costs. The emphasis on climate change also took a major stride with this
incident.
How Canada is ‘faking it’ on climate change
The report by Lorrie Goldstein reports that the Canada has come up with a new plan
to meet the targets of the Paris climate accord. The report states that Canada is no way going
to achieve the Target by 2030, since the emissions have been increasing and the Carbon Tax
and low emissions initiatives are a trick, claims Goldstein. The emission cannot be reduced
unless man made emission using fossil fuels can be effectively managed instead of just
putting taxes on it.
America's love of luxury toilet paper is destroying Canadian forests
The report by the Sam Wolfsan published in the guardian reports about the impact of the
extensive Toilet paper use by the Americans and which is taking a toll on the boreal forests of
Canada. The reports refers to the Natural Defense Council and the Stand Earth, two major
environmental organisations regarding the impact that luxury toilet paper is creating on the
environment and the forests of Canada.
Canadian forestry producers see demand growing
The report claims about the growing demand of the Canadian Forest produce and claims that
China is one of the major importers of Canadian forest produce. The report published by the
Global News also states that after 2007 the lumbering activities have increased to meet the

growing demand of the international market. This is taking a toll on the environmental health
of the Canada’s forests.

Canada's forests actually emit more carbon than they absorb — despite what you've heard

The report by Robson Fletcher of CBC news states in this report that the amount of
carbon emitted by the forest had never been accounted but the forest also do emit carbon
through their decomposition and in their life time. This report claims that through the
accounting method the net carbon sink can be accounted and that would allow us to
understand the total carbon emission against absorbed, giving a true record of the emissions.
