Introduction
Safety defines freedom from risk. Risk is the probability of suffering harm or loss. The
controllable and uncontrollable factor affects the risk. Awareness of these factors helps to reduce
the risk. It is required to do all the work with all the surety and safety. A minor risk will be
considered as the major factor for someone’s life. Risk should be controllable at the last level
weather it is difficult or not. Safety should be the priority of every organization as it is necessary
to work safe and secure (Alston, 2017). Safety is the major part of every workplace but
especially it is important in construction companies. It has been found that there is high risk in
construction companies as compare to the others that is why; it is required the company has to
introduce some hazards and safety tools to reduces the accidents. Many safety tools have been
introducing by instrument companies for the protection of people at the workplace. The
government also introduces the rules and regulations for the protection of the public. In this
paper, the discussion is made on the topic of “Safety and Risk Management”. Many accidents
have been caused just because of a lack of awareness like in the case of “Canberra Construction
Company”.
Overview of the case study
Canberra Construction Company is a construction company that does not use any hazard,
warning signs and safety instruments to develop a safe environment. The company was found
guilty due to which it was charged $1.1million over the death of the truck driver. Michael Booth,
48, was electrocuted when his tip trucked touch the power lines of a worksite. It is observed that
the company did not use any warning poster at the construction area due to which the truck
drivers park the truck over the construction area. During the parking time, the truck touched the

power lines and it led to Mr. Booth’s death. As per the investigation of the case, it has been
found that Kenoss had a poor organization structure and culture as it appoints the safety officers
with no qualification. The company also tries or hinders the investigation into death such as
attendance records. As per the investigator Walker, the company breaches the safety contract at
the higher end of such as breach. It can be said that it is the most avoidable accident as the
company needs to paste the posters of warning signs. ACT Work safe Commissioner has been
introducing in which the companies were warned for using the hazards and safety tools. The
company was charged $1.5 million to breach the contract.
Effect
As per the above case analysis, it has been found that the company was guilty not just for
death but also for not using the safety tools at the workplace which is an essential factor for
Construction companies. It is observed that the company did many wrong things that are
considered illegal. These things breach the contract between the company and the government. It
is observed that the company did not use any safety hazard due to which Mr. Booth has died
which is one of the causes of breach of contract. The other point is that the company hires the
security officer with no qualification just because of fewer fees but due to less qualification it
does not aware of these power lines. These factors are considered that breaches the contract of
safety. Apart from these, the company also tries to hide the evidence of investigation of death
which is necessary to represent the case in the court. Hiding the evidence is also a factor that
breaches the contract of loyalty among the company and government.
SAFE WORK Australia
The company can resolve the issue by doing the whole safe work in society. As per this
case study, it is observed that the company ignores all the safety measures at the workplace

which is essential to implement to resolve the issues. The government of Australia introduced a
new policy for safety that is SAFE WORK. According to the SAFE WORK Australia, the
company has to maintain the machines daily or a monthly basis so that the passage of electricity
can be measured and controlled (Safe Work Australia, 2018). It reduces the accidents of
electrocuted at the workplace. Safe work is a necessary part for the company to operate smoothly
and effectively without any worries of increasing death. The other factor of Safework is to use
the hazards and safety posters to protect the employees of the company. Using of Hazards and
Safety posters helps to reduce the causes of death and accidents. Especially the company has to
use the warning signs so that people should aware of all restricted areas. Safety measures not
only help to reduce the accidents but it also helps to do the work quickly and smoothly (Tauqeer,
et. al, 2015). The development of safe work does not only rely on top management but
employees also have to take care of themselves and implement the hazards as per the
requirement so that they are protected from the accidents. The organization has to organize the
training programmed for all employees to inform them about the warning signs and posters so
that they can understand the warning signs while doing the work. In the training period, it is also
required to train the employees that how the tools and instruments have been used and how these
are beneficial for the company (Namian, Albert, Zuluaga, & Behm, 2016). As per the case, it has
been seen that the company appoint the security officer without any qualification just to check
the areas but it failed that is why; it is suggested that the company has to appoint the people with
the high qualification or it has to train the employees regarding the uses of hazards and the
meaning of warning posts. Providing the training reduces half of the work of the company and
also reduces accidents with a high percentage (Demirkesen, & Arditi, 2015). The employees can
put the warning sign over the area and also outline the area with the safety hazards. It helps to

aware of the drivers not to enter the construction area. This safe work technique helps the
organization to resolve the issues of accidents and reduces the causes of death. It has been found
that safe work resolves all the issues of the company.
Recommendations
There are many other techniques that the organization can be used to resolve the issues. If
I have an opportunity to work on this place then I would like to implement all these measures for
protection and safety. These are safety and security tools that the organization should follow for
protection (Namian, Albert, Zuluaga, & Behm, 2016). The company has to implement all
security measures so that the chances of accidents can be reduced directly without any effects.
Using safety measures is not the only factor that protects the employees, the company also has to
provide the clothing and gear which helps to protect the employees from big disasters. The
clothing and gears equipment’s should be wear by the employees of the company while entering
the worksite and remove all gears while leaving for the day. The types of equipment depending
on the nature of the work such as goggles, gloves, visibility clothing, steel-toed shoes, protective
suit, and the others should be wearing at the construction site. Clothing and gears help the
employees to protect themselves from happening an event which is especially happening at the
construction site. If the truck driver were wore the clothing and gears for its protection, then his
chances of safe and secure is high (Leveson, 2015).
Clean the workplace is another factor that the organization should be implemented to
reduces the accidents like the truck drivers. As per the case study, the truck driver did not know
about the open power lines and park the truck. But due to power lines, truck driver get
electrocute. It is required to clean the areas and divide the departments. It means the employees
have been divided with different work as per their talent with the space so that they cannot do

their work in any area. Keeping the work area clean and free of debris will help to lessen the
chances of injuries for the workers of the company. It helps to resolve the small issues or
accidents such as slips, trips, and falls. Before leaving for the day or after finished the whole
work, the employees should store tools and material in the storeroom so that the chances of
leakage of gas and oil will reduce. It also helps to clear the walkaways to prevent the people
from accidents such as slips, falls, blasts and the others. As per the case study, the employees of
the company have to hold the posters in danger areas so that the driver takes care of all of its
parking areas (Glendon, & Clarke, 2015). Providing the training or posting the warning posters
supports in reducing the risk of accidents but still, there are some chances of accidents. It is
required for the company to implement all the safety measures appropriately as per the
description (Shamsuddin, Ani, Ismail, & Ibrahim, 2015). The company has to implement the
description of the equipment’s so that the chances of misusing the equipment’s have been
reduced and helps the employees to protect them from injuries. Misusing the equipment directly
affects the organization. Misusing and the lack of knowledge of using the instruments increase
the chances of an accident. The company has to put the covers and also put the warning signs
over the construction areas so that the truck driver was not entered the area. The driver should
also know about the signs so that he can easily understand the danger sign and not entered the
area (Boyle, 2015).
According to the case study, the officer has to provide the information to drivers about the
construction area. It also has to provide special training to security officers related to safety and
risk measurements so that it will help the employees. A security officer has to appoint the
responsibility to the other employees to inform the driver not to enter the construction area. To

tell the roles and responsibilities of the security officers also helps to develop a safe environment
(Ryzhova, Titova, & Gendler, 2017).
Conclusion
From the above analysis, it is concluded that safety is a very essential part of the
construction company. In the case study, it has been found that the company ignores the safety
and security hazards for employees due to which it faced challenges such as the death of his
driver and also it was warned by the court. Apart from all these punishments, the company was
also penalized by the government with the $1.5 million to breach the safety contract. SAFE
WORK helps the company to resolve these issues as there are many techniques that the
framework suggests to implement daily. This framework suggests the common techniques that
the organization has to follow but if I have an opportunity to work on this construction site. I
would like to use the different techniques that were helped to save the life of Mr. Booth’s such as
clothing and gearing tools, clean the workplace, describe using the instruments properly. These
instruments help the organization to resolve these issues and also help to protect the other
employees from future incidents.
