Introduction
In this assignment a research has been done over the world famous festival named
‘Cannes film festival’. The focus will be given over the history and importance of this famous
international event. Cannes Festival is one of the famous film festivals throughout the world.
Previously it was also knows as ‘International film fare festival’ because it considers movies,
actors, actresses and different aspects of films across the globe. It has been running from last
73 years and still known as a very famous and eye-capturing event of France in film industry.
The official name of this festival is Festival de Cannes.
Special cultural features of the event
This festival has a lot of cultural value because of its world famous unique features.
Some of the aspects of the festival are as follows:
History of the Cannes film festival
This festival was founded in 20th September 1946 at the Cannes city of France. It
covers all global film industry at a massive level. At that time the French minister of national
education and fine arts, named as Mr Jean Jay decided to start a huge international festival in
the industry of cinema (CANNES, 2020). He decided to start this extraordinary film festival
to beat the ‘Venice film festival’. After 1946, it was proved as a major step in the World
Cinema. It became a world class film festival after the completion of Second World War. It
has been gone through various turmoil and scandals but still not only manage to survive but
also create its importance in the film industry. Now days this festival is known as the biggest
festival in the cinematography and media industry (Andrew, 2019).
International importance of the festival
Cannes film festival is a vital source of comparing quality of global film culture. It
also provides a platform to shine young artists in media industry. By giving awards in the
various segments of the film industry like Best Actor, Best Actress, Best short film, Best
director and many other awards, the festival establish an exclusive reputation in the film
industry. The name of the major awards given in Cannes film festival are Golden Palm

Award, Grand Prix, Prix du scenario, Prix du Jury, Prix-de-interpretation feminine and many
awards (Jazeera, 2020).
Cannes film festival: 12th to 23rd May 2020
Despite the threat of spreading the corona virus, France decided to keep on running its
international film festival. The Cannes festival 2020 is scheduled in between 12th May to 23rd
of May (CANNES F. D., 2020). The France is not going to cancel its 73rd edition of the
Cannes film festival which is a matter of pride for the country (Wire, 2020).
Conclusion
On the bases of the above stated analysis, it can be said that Cannes film festival is such a
famous and prestigious festival of the media and film industry. After a lot of struggle and
planning, this festival is came into existence. This international event helps and provides
recognition to the artists and actors of cinematography industry so that they can get a proper
platform to improve their talent and motivate towards innovations in the film industry.
