2CANTERBURY COUNCIL PROFILE
Introduction
In studying sociology and social science, demography plays an important role in
understanding the society of a particular nation, state, district, city or village. The study of
demography reveals how progressive or regressive a nation/state is. Demographics is the
study of population based on several factors such as age, race and gender. Social profiling is
also important in terms of tracking the activities of the users (Forbes.com.2013). The
respective paper is the study of demographic and social profile of a newly made city known
as Canterbury Bankstown that comes under the jurisdiction of Sydney, Australia. The
particular paper is done in order to materialize the impact of the heat wave on the population,
flora, fauna and services delivery of Canterbury. This is done through the means of literature
review, which sheds light on the impact of the heat wave on the population.
Discussion
Canterbury Council
Canterbury Council is a civil institution in the city of Canterbury Bankstown that was
first proclaimed by the government of New South Wales on the year of 12 March, 2016 that
replaced the former Bankstown and Canterbury Councils, becoming the largest council in the
district of New South Wales by population and demography and is also considered that the
area has almost more than 361,000 residents. Mr. Richard Colley is the government
appointed administrator of the new Canterbury Council and the transition of the council was
led by him for the period of eighteen months, which led up to the election of September 2017.
Fifteen counsellors were elected in the election procedure and three of them were in each of
the five wards. The deputy mayor of Canterbury Council is Nadiah Saleh who will be holding
the position for the next upcoming year (Cbcity.nsw.gov.au.2020).

The focus of the paper is on the issue of extreme heat and the responses of the
Canterbury Council towards minimizing the risks.
Extreme heat
According to the statements of the Australian government, extreme heat has been
defined as “the significantly hotter climate than the average temperature, affecting flora and
fauna, infrastructure, delivery and other services.” (Nsw.gov.au 2020)
Planning responses
The NSW government indulges in collaboration with the Bureau of Metereology for
the formulation of Heatwave Sub Plans. These plans differ for the different regions,
depending on the impact and the intensity. Canterbury Council uses Local Emergency
Management Planning Template for creating the plans. Consistent approach is exposed
towards measuring and predicting the location of the heat waves (Nsw.gov.au 2020). This
measurement is effective for issuing public warnings for saving the lives and property in the
communities. State and the local governments are involved in the process of ensuring the
wellbeing of the communities. Risk and Hazard Assessments are crucial part of the
management planning (Nsw.gov.au 2020). The operations revolve around the cycle of
planning, designing, operation and maintenance.

Nature of the risk
Extreme heat waves have taken a toll on the life and property in the threshold of
Australia. With the rise in population, the impacts of the heat are alarming to note, especially
for the vulnerable groups. The health of the communities experience high and intensified
risks in the form of dehydration, heat stroke, exhaustion and others (Ipcc.ch 2020). The
persons suffering from chronic health diseases are also to encounter worsening of the
conditions due to the extreme heat. Along with this, the impact on the water, air, food and
service deliveries are also high.
Definition of heat wave and vulnerability
According to the revelations of Australian Bureau of Statistics.com (2016), heat wave
adds vulnerability into the ecosystems of a particular area. In this context, mention can be
made of the impact on the flora, fauna, people, properties and others. Variability persists in
the impact, which ranges from high to low confidence zones. Hazard and risk assessment is
done for forecasting the impact on the communities. Assessments, including forecast and
estimations prove effective for enhancing the triple bottom line approach. Typical evidence
of this lies in the tropical zones, which adds vulnerability to the sustenance of the
communities due to fires, cyclones, droughts, hails and floods (Nsw.gov.au 2020).
Social profiling
Social profiling is the process through which portfolios are conducted for the
population. The mediums adopted for creating the profiles are social medias. Collaboration
applications like Jive, IBM Connections and Socialtext are also used for the creation of the
profiles. Data science processes of algorithms have been found to be effective for the creation
of the social profiles (Cbcity.nsw.gov.au. 2020). Maintaining data security is an important
aspect of the social profiling, which is done through the compliance with the data processing
directives. Important legislation is that of the Data Protection Act (2018), according to which
security cookies and policies are mandatory for averting the instances of data leakage.

(Source: Cbcity.nsw.gov.au. 2020)
Vulnerability in terms of:
Age- People over 75 years are more vulnerable to the impacts of the heat waves. This
is especially for the indigenous populations in the communities.
Children- Infants, young children, who are suffering from obesity, are also vulnerable
to the impacts of the heat wave. This is because of the issues like inadequate water
and food supply (Ipcc.ch 2020).
Disability- Aggressive crimes have been found to increase in the extreme heat wave
conditions. Typical exemplars of these are civil unrest, street violence, attacks,
homicide, road rage, domestic violence and others. The people suffering from
disabilities are incapable of handling all these issues and need flexible support and
guidance (Nsw.gov.au 2020).
Low quality housing- People living alone or are isolated are also vulnerable to the
harmful impacts of the heat wave.
Access to public transport, shops, parks, library- People having inadequate access to
the transport and other amenities have high vulnerability to the impacts of the heat
waves.
Health- Heat waves adds vulnerability into the health of the people suffering from the
chronic illness and disease. Typical examples of this are heat strokes, exhaustion and
cramps. In some cases, the medication can increase the vulnerability (Australian
Bureau of Statistics.com. 2016). Along with this, the people suffering from high blood

pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, dementia, alcohol and drug use are also adversely
affected through the harmful impacts of the heat waves.
Conclusion

also important in terms of tracking the activities of the people on the social media and others.
Herein lays the importance of data protection, which is effective for averting the risks of
cyber crimes. The main focus of the paper is on the impact of extreme heat wave on the
population, especially of the communities under the Canterbury Council.
