Car Rental App Design Project

This document outlines a project focused on designing an interactive car rental application. It addresses the need for a mobile platform in the car rental industry due to technological advancements. The project includes a problem statement, user analysis, and task analysis. The proposed application aims to provide users with features such as renting cars, comparing prices, and locating rental stores. The user interface is designed to be dynamic, intuitive, and easy to navigate, catering to both one-off and returning customers. The project also identifies key stakeholders and outlines six preliminary tasks that users should be able to accomplish with ease, such as creating an account, searching for vehicles, obtaining price estimates, comparing prices, requesting additional information, and reserving vehicles.

Problem Statement and Solution
Our world today is consistently growing due to rapid changes in technology. Many
people and businesses are often engaged with the use of technology such as laptops, tablets, and
smartphones. Such developments have significantly influenced growth and competitive
advantage within several industries such as the Car Rental industry. According to Pat Farrell
Enterprise’s Chief Marketing Officer, there is a need to pay attention to customer preference due
to new digital and mobile technology (Enterprise, 2014). With technology being the largest
driver of change and opportunity, Car Rental companies are forced to shift towards adopting a
mobile platform that engages customers with ease and flexibility.
Acknowledging this need, we propose designing an interactive rental application that
lures and attracts individuals and businesses. The user interface should be dynamic and easy to
use with multiple functionalities. The application will provide users with features such as renting
cars, comparing prices and locating rental stores. The interface should be intuitive with a fluid
design hence making it easy to navigate. The user can choose to either “sign up to be a member,
earn membership rewards” or “reserve the car as a guest”. Then, indicating when and where to
pick up the car and return the car. Customer can rank their priorities by the brands, models,
years, sizes, colors, insurances and discount partners, price ranges. Then, the system should
process the entries and provide a final price (including tax, estimated) to the customers.
Customer need to fill out the name, phone number and email (for confirmation purposes) to
finish the reservation.
User Analysis
All rental company have two types of users, those who use the website to rent cars and
those who reserve in person or via phone. Our target customers are those who will use the
internet to reserve cars. Furthermore, they prefer an easy and efficient car-rental experience with
competitive pricing. Within this target market our user characteristics can be divided into design
and purpose. With regards to design the portal being used to access the rental application is
decisive. Our users can use a mobile phone, tablet or computer to access the application. With
each device comes additional design requirements that must be executed in order to maintain

fluidity and flexibility. With regards to purpose some users are one off customers therefore are
looking for a quick transaction with minimal effort. Whereas other users are returning customers
therefore require more personalization and accessibility. Consequently, in order to design the
correct interface, the following customer types will have to be analyzed and carefully integrated.
Although the user characteristics are the main concern there are several other stakeholders. The
major stakeholder is the business providing the rental service. Within that business, there are
internal stakeholders such as the employees who interact with the system and upper
management. There are external stakeholders as well, such as business partners and rivals. The
correct user interface and application can provide certain business competitive advantage thus
can affect the vehicle industry as well as the local economy.
Task Analysis
With regards to the interface we have identified 6 preliminary tasks that the user should be able
to accomplish with ease.
1. Customers should be able to create an account or access the system as a guest.
2. Customers should be able to search and browse vehicles based on price, vehicle type, car
brand and location.
3. Customers should be able to obtain price estimates for a rental by providing vehicle type
and location.
4. Customers should be able to compare price estimates of vehicles based on companies,
locations and vehicle type.
5. Customers should be able to request additional information on vehicles along with
customer rating.
6. Customers should be able to reserve vehicles and provide payment details online or the
location of their choosing.
