INTRODUCTION
Analysing one's capabilities and strength is the most important thing pertaining to
bringing change. For working at care home requires number of skills which is important for
carrying out the activities in a better and effective way. This essay provides an insight into my
internal strength and weakness along with the opportunity and threat. Based upon key areas for
further developed in determined in respect to my career as Manager at care home.
DISCUSSION
For effectively analysing the key aspects like skills and knowledge in respect to my area
of career pertaining to the care home manager I will be using SWOT analysis of my personal
learnings which will help in my career development (GRANT, 2021). A SWOT analysis is the
tool which is used for determining one's position in a specific field or areas in teams of
competitiveness based upon which strategies and planning is done and further improvement plan
is carried out. This tool is helpful for me in determining what is effective and ineffective in the
acre home system in regard to the things being handled by me as a Manager.
As a care manager I would be responsible for my handling all aspects of daily business
operations involving the recruitment and management of the staff, handling finances and the
quality of service being provided. Following is the SWOT analysis of myself for personal
learning and development which will be helpful in my career.
Strengths
As per the roles and responsibilities of the manager, I am having effective knowledge and
understanding about the aspects which are needed to be covered. I am having very good
understanding of this field of study which is my core strength as having better and effective
understanding is the most crucial thing which brings me into this field. No one can mislead me
and in addition to this, it requires effective leadership and motivational skills which will help in
providing direction to the staff in order to meet with the desired goals and objective by providing
right and quality services to the people living there (Evans and et.al., 2018). This will also
involve motivating the employees to perform better so that it does not create any ignorance to the
health and safety of the staff. Legal awareness is also an important factor which can be
considered as my strength as it is important as the manager of care home to gain an
understanding pertaining to the legal aspect which is required to be complied with in order to run

the business in a better and effective way. From the view of this position, I am having a good
communication skills which is essential for properly and accurately conveying things to one
another without any discrepancy and along with this, through this skill I can enter into
partnership with other organization for a specific requirement in a better way. I am having the
capability to work under pressure along with accepting the criticism of the people and
management. This will assist me in working effectively without any tension or getting hyper as I
comfortable and experienced in working under pressure. Therefore, these are the key strengths
which I have in respect to meeting with my responsibilities and duties in a better way as the
manager of care home.
Weaknesses
But apart from my skills there are certain weaknesses which might affect my position as a
manager. The planning and delivery skills is the aspect in which I am weak at. It is crucial to be
personally organized and motivated as a leader but it is also important to have an effective time
management and self motivation skills in order to effectively plan and deliver for the
organization. These are the important managerial skills but a leader can also have them (Harris
and Kelly, 2019). These skills in which I am not good at is the key weakness which can lead to
my failure as a manager. As the care home involves people having any disease which requires
timely look out and assistance and thus, under such circumstances inability to meet with the
requirement of the people there will be the biggest failure of my career and professional
development. This results into increasing the need for making my weaknesses into my strength
which will help me in my personal as well as professional development.
For overcoming my weaknesses I would be required to indulge into activities which will
help in sharpening these skills as without effective planning accomplishing the desired goals is
not possible. Through the way of making small time schedule will assist in effectively and
properly managing the time pertaining to the completion of the work. By maintaining a positive
attitude will support in converting problem or weaknesses into the opportunities and learning of
new experiences and gaining better understanding about the issue. People management is also
the skill which required to be efficient at by the manager in which I am not. This skill is needed
while carrying out tasks or activities with others in a team or group under various situations
which cannot be ignored. Handling people living there is also a task and requires high level of
efficiency and patience which cannot be avoided. In order to overcome this weakness, I would be

undertaking courses on people management through which I will get to know about the strategies
which can be used for effectively handling the people.
Opportunities
For professional development, there are number of opportunities available with me
pertaining enhancing my future prospects. First can undertake a degree course on in relation to
the subject like health and social care management after which I can take a specific training in
the field or work as an apprentice in an organization. In addition to this, I can undertake course
on learning IT and computer skills as it will help in managing the work even in a better way. It
will help in proper management of the work under extreme situations. Along with this, I have
chance to work on the financial aspect as well, like the budgeting, financial statement analysis,
analysing the contracts and terms of agreement and understanding fundraising opportunities
available (Dewar and MacBride, 2017). These opportunities can be availed through the way
undertaking course and then experience in the same. These skills are not only useful in this field
of care home management but is also helpful in other fields and jobs as well. Therefore, by
actively understanding and identifying the opportunities available to me, I can make a plan so
that I can easily get access to it without can barrier and thus, turning it into my strength which
will provide support in my future growth. These opportunities will add to my strength and
competencies which will also support in meeting up with my personal learnings and the
development of my career.
Threats
The manager of Care home comes across various barriers which can pose as a threat.
There are risk which is required to analysed if they incur and these are something which cannot
be ignored and every organization comes across it. The situation like the staff getting sick which
can create problem in effectively and smoothly running out the service. Residents getting sick
even in the care setting which results into creating risk for everyone the residents, staff and the
visitors if any (Penney and Ryan, 2021). Under the situation like the outbreak of Covid-19 as
such situation can result into causing staff getting sick who are providing support to the care
home residents carrying virus. Under such situation, the role of manager comes in where I have
to take decision in regard to the precautionary measures such as during pandemic the staff can
make use of PPE and comply with the other infection control protocols and taking preventive
steps for reducing the level of risk etc. All these measures are taken by the manager which

requires effective analytical skills for determining the risk level of the situation. While apart
from the situation of pandemic, I as a manager would be required to prepare a contingency or
emergency plan with relevant options so that during the time of emergency it can be
implemented for the purpose of mitigating the risks or reducing the negative impact of it.
CONCLUSION
It can be inferred from the above that for the purpose of being a manger at care home will
require me to be proficient in certain skills which is essential to carry out the activities and
efficiently meeting with the roles and duties of the organization. By carrying out the SWOT
analysis of myself, I can state that field knowledge including legal regulations, leadership and
communication skills are my key strengths while inefficient planning and delivery skills is my
major weakness. There are numerous opportunities available to me like enhancing my computer
skills and getting professional degree within the field on the other hand, in terms of threats
suddenly staff or the residents are sick affecting daily activities of the care home and taking care
of people. Thus, proper steps are being undertaken for overcoming such weaknesses and threats
and taking advantage of the benefits available.

Reflection
After creating my SWOT analysis in respect to the position of Manager at care home, I
have understood the key aspects or areas on which I am required to worked upon and thus, it
becomes important for my future. Therefore, I took it seriously developed my skills based upon
the analysis. In respect to my strength, I have further worked on getting expanded knowledge
into the care home setting by using the online material and resources available. This has helped
me in sharpening my skills so that I can use it in a better way thus adding value to my knowledge
and understanding (Shirley, 2020). On account of my weaknesses, I have undertaken the course
on the planning and execution which has helped me in providing direction pertaining to what is
required to be done and how the activity is planned and what are the key elements which are
needed to be taken into consideration for attaining success. After the completion of the course, I
have taken the job in order to gain an experience which will help in further developing my skills
through practical experience. In addition to this, I have worked in managing time and people
which was mainly done through communicating with the people and taking a short term course
on it. Through the course, I have got to understand certain strategies which can implemented for

ensuring better and effective management of the people. I have practically applied these skills in
my academic like timely completion of the assignment and working together in a team resulted
into sharpening my skills. The result of this has lead to the creation of the collaborative working
skills along with better and effective communication skills.
Pertaining to the opportunities which were available I have tried to understand the usage
of each of the opportunities so that effective measures or action could be taken on time.
Therefore, I have mainly worked upon my It skills as this skill is important all the managerial
position in every field (Yousefli, Nasiri and Moselhi, 2017). Apart from this, I have also worked
on expanding my knowledge in the field of finance like creation of budgets, understanding the
financial terms with the help of my colleague which helped me in effectively handling the budget
and financial requirement of care home. This results into reducing the need for another personnel
for taking care of this. In order to gain a practical exposure of the same, I have created few
budgets on practice with target set and got it reviewed by my colleague and the academic faculty
in order to ensure that I have understood the topic appropriately.
The major threats identified were the staff getting sick or the treating residents of care
home with infectious disease that Covid-19. In respect to the case of Covid-19, the measures
were taken as guidelines provided by the government as this was an uncertain situation and staff
were not having any prior experience in working under such crisis. Thus, nothing much has been
worked on this part but a separate plan is being prepared for such situation if similar
circumstances emerges (Hanratty and et.al., 2020). On the other hand, the staff getting sick
threat, some alternative courses of action has been created on my own which helped me to focus
more on the issue and using my creativity and presence of mind in preparation of the plan. After
preparation of the plan I have analysed it and consulted with the other having experience in the
same field like my tutors. In terms of practicality, I have created a plan for the university in
regard to how University can overcome the issue of panic and fear created by Covid-19 over the
studies of the students. This practical experience has assisted me in understanding the various
things which is needed to be accounted for in order to gain an understanding about the issue and
identifying the alternative solutions to it.
Thus, in this way, I have worked on improving my strengths, converting weaknesses into
my strength, undertaken steps for taking advantage of the opportunities available which will help
in my professional care as a manager of care home and even higher position. Critical steps were
