Introduction
Developing one’s own management skill is a very crucial requirement of any person who has
been working in a given position since a long time. It is quite essential to move further in the
career path so as to attain success (Daley, Coyle and Dwyer, 2016). However reaching this target
is not an easy task as this demand for a lot of commitment along with certain skills. The present
report has thus made an attempt to study the potential of a senior HR executive employed in
Hilton hotel to become a manager in the near term future. This has been done by carrying out the
persons assessment on the skill set possessed by him or her and the one required to become a
manager. Emphasis has further been given on carrying out one’s own career development.
A review of own potential as a prospective manager
I am employed in Hilton hotel as a senior HR executive whose work is to carry out tasks related
to HR in form of payroll, salary, training and development etc. I wish to move forward in the
career in the near term future and reach the position of Hr. manager. This is however not an easy
task but still as per the present scenario I am required to judge my potential as a prospective
manager so as to identify my strengths and work on the weaknesses. To become a good manager
I am required to possess an extensive skill set which starts from planning and ends up to
motivating my tram members. Hence here is my analysis of the skill set so as to identify the
current potential as a prospective manager.
Communication skill – Being a strong communicator is a very important skill set in order
to reach at the post of Hr. manager in the near term future. This is as a large number of
functions played by manager require communication be it with top management, team
members, outside parties etc. A good manager is required to communicate properly in
verbal and written manner and he should also have a presence of good listening skills
(Ulrich and Dulebohn, 2015). Seeing my present working I can say that I am quite good
in the area of written communication skill due to my education in English medium which
has also made me sound in vocabulary. However, I lag behind in oral communication.
This may hinder the confidence of my team members in believing in my overall
capability. It has been righty said that words have the power to motivate people and make
them do the unthinkable. Hence I am required to work hard on it. On a positive note, I

consider myself a good listener and pay full attention on the conversation that has been
done by the colleagues.
Mentoring skill – As per the input given by my team members, supervisors and according
to my belief I am a good mentor to the new employees. I try to focus on the hidden skill
set of the candidates and thus ensure that proper work has been rendered by him. I also
encourage the new employees who struggle with the work and try to motivate my
colleagues so that they can perform better. It is because of this quality of mine that I was
promoted to senior Hr. executive in a span of just 12 months. This was a big achievement
for me as well as a rare occurrence for my department which has boosted my confidence
to move on higher positions in the near term future.
Emotional intelligence – this is a skill set which involves for a natural ability present in
individuals to be able to perceive, control as well as evaluate the emotions of others so
that actions can be done accordingly. It has been argued by several authors that emotional
intelligence is inborn in people but can be learned as well as developed during the course
of lifetime (Cleveland, Byrne and Cavanagh, 2015). This is one of the major skill set that
is required to be worked upon me in order to become a good manager in coming future. I
am required to develop an ability to read a person so that rational decisions can be taken
that is of concern to them (Emotional Intelligence: 10 Ways to Enhance Yours. 2011).
Time management skill – As per my understanding, the work of Hr. team are quite tine
bound as they have to calculate the leaves in a timely manner so as to pay salaries to
employees on a fix date. There is a need to recruit candidates in a fixed time so as to
avoid loss that the organization may face in the absence of employees (Muratbekova-
Touron and Galindo, 2018). I as a senior Hr. executive of Hilton hotel have a good level
of consciousness with respect to time and also recognize its impact on working of Hr. if it
is not saved. I find myself quite sound in the given skill set as I try not to waste my time
within office premises and also adhere with the schedules that has been given to me. In
this way, I am able to complete my work in a timely manner as given to me by the
supervisors and thus able to generate time for guiding the new employees as well.
Problem solving and decision making skill - As an employee I find myself quite lagged
behind in the skill set as it is quite difficult for me to look at any issue from all angles and
find solution for the same. In this regard, I have to depend on my supervisor as well as

the advice of other colleagues so as to come out of the problem. Moreover, I am not able
to stand still on a decision that has been taken by me which is required to be worked
upon. Hence I will have to put in a lot of practice in order to learn the skill set so as to
increase my ability as a prospective manager (7 Unusual Ways to Improve Your
Decision-Making Skills. 2014)
Willingness for self-development – As an employee of Hilton hotel I constantly try to
carry out activities related to self-improvement and also ensure to hone my present skill
and become an expert in it. As a future manager I am further required to maintain this
skill set and possess a thirst for knowledge followed by having agreed to become better in
whatever I do. This skill is most likely to assist in my overall career advancement and as I
find myself sound in it hence I am least likely to face any issues.
Delegation and empowerment – I personally feel that this skill set is highly prevalent in
me. This has been instilled through my supervisors who delegates small responsibilties
once I learned the working of HR in Hilton hotel. I personally feel that if given a chance
then I can micromanage a small team of employees and delegate work to them which can
then be supervised by me before being done by my team lead.
Creativity and innovation – as per my own understanding, I consider myself as a creative
as well as innovative person who has the power to come up with new ideas by which
works can be done in a better manner. For example, I often come out with ideas related to
team building activities within Hilton hotel that is often approved by my team lead. I
have also been rewarded by the management for being the most creative and innovative
person in Hilton. IF given a chance to be an Hr. manager in the coming future then I can
surely come up with creative ideas that can keep the work environment a good one.
The development of own career development plan for employment within a business and
services context
As per the skill set mentioned by me as a perspective Hr. manager, I have created my own career
development plan which is as follows;
Summarizing my own self-assessment – An overall assessment has been carried out by me with
respect to identifying my strengths and weakness as an Hr. manager. In the area of strengths I
have found out that I am a creative and innovative person and also good in the area of time

management. I am also a good mentor and delegator to the team members and focus on my
overall self-development. However I lag behind in oral communication, emotional intelligence,
problem solving as well as decision making skills.
Inputs by supervisor - As per the inputs given by my supervisor I have found that I am required
to make myself technically sound which is a need of hr. manager within Hilton hotel in the
coming future. Moreover the company needs employees who are focused and passionate in the
work where I am quite close to it but still required to work on it a bit more.
Setting of career goals -On the basis of my self-evaluation as well as the one dine by my
supervisor, I have set some short, medium and long term goals which are as follows;
Short term goals
To earn an additional diploma degree in HR.
To increase my work experience in HR
To improve my communication, decision making and emotional intelligence skills.
Medium term goals
To apply for the position of HR manager in different companies
To gain certifications like Professional of Human Resources (PHR) and Certified
Employment Benefits Specialist (CEBS).
To make myself technically sound by self-learning.
Long term goals
To hold a key Hr. position in one of the organization.

Review CDAP – As per the above developmental activity it has been found that I can bring a
huge improvement in communication, decision making and emotional intelligence skill set in a
span of 3 to 4 months. This can then make me get prepared for all the future roles as a senior hr.
member of any company. My overall job performance in present scenario can get improved to a
great extent if I start communicating and making decisions in a better manner. This may take
time and may further demand for creation of other skill sets like
Conclusion
From the above report it can be concluded that various skill sets are required by me to become a
manager in the coming future. I have found myself quite good in a few of them being written
communication, mentoring and time management. However I am required to bring a huge
improvement in verbal communication, decision making, and emotional intelligence among
others. In this regard a career development plan has been made by me which is mostly likely to
assist in paving my future as a perspective manager in the field of Hr. in any company. I am most
likely to receive benefit if I bring an improvement in the given skill set.
