AI Summary
This report presents Career Episode 2 of a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) focusing on the design and development of a manually operated eco-friendly road and floor cleaning machine. The project aimed to create a cleaning solution for roads and floors without relying on power, fuel, or engines. The student, acting as a team member, designed the machine's layout, selected components, and determined dimensions. The report details the project's objectives, the student's responsibilities, engineering knowledge applied, and the mitigation of challenges. It highlights the use of wheels, a shaft, chain, supporting wheels, gears, and a collecting box for waste. The student successfully designed a prototype and addressed issues such as weight and dirt trails, modifying the design to improve efficiency. The project successfully met its objectives by creating a functional, eco-friendly cleaning machine powered entirely by manual effort. The student's contribution involved designing the blueprint, selecting components, and improvising parts like the collecting box. The report concludes with an overview of the project's success in achieving its goals and the student's personal contributions.

friendly for the ease of the users to clean the floor and the roads. I had specifically undertaken
this particular project to make the roads and the floor dust free with the use of a cleaning
machine that will save energy as well as fuel and will perform the activity with efficiency at the
same time.
2.2.3 My work area
I had been assigned by the team leader with various responsibilities that I had performed
towards successfully completing the project. I had created the design for the entire layout of the
machine along with the prototype of the project. I had decided upon the fact of making the
system to be driven entirely with manpower without any consumption of any form of energy. I
had also carried out the calculation of the maximum amount of floor which the machine will
cover at one go that is supposed to be 5 feet. Lastly, I had tested the whole system to get hold of
any existing errors that might be fixed for a proper running of the system.

The following responsibilities had been performed by me,
i) I had developed as well as designed the entire layout depending upon which the
cleaning machine had been developed.
ii) I had selected the physical parts that need to be integrated into the system to make it
completely driven by manpower and not consuming any form of energy in the form
of fuel.

iv) I had also taken the decision of the maximum length that the machine will cover at a
single go.
2.3 Personal Engineering Activity
2.3.1 Theory of Project
On a primary basis, I had highlighted the idea of creating the design as well as
developing a cleaning machine that will have the capability to clean the floors as well as the road
without the prior usage of any kind of resources such as the likes of fuel, energy or electricity. I
had given this idea upon adhering to the cleanliness that is needed on the bus stands as well as
the railway stations after the littering is done by us humans. Each of the machine will have two
wheels that has been connected with a shaft in the middle. The shaft will be rotated using a chain
that will again be rotating the wheels. The most important component will be the brush that will
act as a primary cleaner for the roads along with the collecting box into which all the waste that
is cleaned an collected will be stored to be dumped later into the garbage.
2.3.2 Engineering knowledge and application of skills in the Project
In the project, I had designed the prototype in such a way that the machine will have a
pair of wheels connected to each other with the help of a shaft. The wheels will have a diameter
of 609.6mm and the shaft will have a diameter of 25mm and 500mm long. The rotational motion
of the wheel will be carried out with the help of a chain that shall be 1219mm in length. In
addition to this, I have made the proper usage of two supporting wheels of 200mm diameter
each. I have again included a handle that will be used for handling as well as holding the
machine while the cleaning procedure is carried out. This entire setup is built in such a way, that
the driving force is supposed to be manual sine there is no presence of any electricity or fuel for

running the machine. This handle can be adjusted in terms of height with the use of three
adjusting holes that have been provided into the cleaning machine. The chain that has been
provided to the machine moves on the basis of the wheel and the gear. I have built the machine
with the use of all the parts that have been mentioned in here and the machine can be moved with
the help of the handle in the desired direction.

2.3.3 Tasks performed
The project leader had entrusted upon me the following activities during the project that
have been stated,
i) I had designed the entire design on the basis of which the eco-friendly cleaning
machine was designed.
ii) I had chosen the dimensions of the wheels, shaft, gears and the chain that forms the
primary part of the cleaning machine.
iii) I had chosen the number of gears along with the dimension of the same to be
integrated into the cleaning machine.

iv) I had specifically taken the decision of how much ground area shall the cleaning
machine cover at one go.
2.3.4 Issue and Mitigation
Issues
i) Primarily, I had chosen to make use of four wheels within the cleaning machine to
make it stable. However, weight issues had been identified.
ii) Initially the wheels had not been moving efficiently as I had expected initially from
the design that I had made.
iii) I had made the design without the presence of a collecting box and that had led to a
trail of dirt behind when the cleaning procedure was getting carried out.
Mitigation
i) I had reduced the number of wheels present within the cleaning machine to two when
the stability issue had been identified.
ii) I had identified that if I provisioned the wheels with two supporting wheels, then the
efficiency of the movement had increased rapidly when the cleaning machine was
working.
iii) When I had seen the trail of dirt behind the cleaning machine, I had modified the
design and placed a collecting box to collect the dirt that the machine is cleaning on
its way.
2.3.5 Collaborated work

project, I had received help from my team members to carry out the activities with greater

efficiency and with collaboration. My team members had cross-checked the design of the
prototype and helped me identifying the issues that had initially been present within the design. I
had also successfully carried out my responsibility of checking the designed prototype at every
individual step with help from all of my team members.
2.4 Summary
2.4.1 Overview of the project
Initially, I had been given to design as well as develop a cleaning machine that will be
totally eco-friendly without using any form of energy such as fuel or electricity. I had made
proper use of a pair of wheels, a shaft, a chain, supporting wheels, gears as well as a collecting
box to retain the cleanliness. I had used a handle to manually power the cleaning machine as well
as change the direction of the machine while cleaning the road or the floor. In short, I had taken
up the idea of an eco-friendly machine and designed the machine in such a way that it requires
no energy consumption and is completely hand driven.
2.4.2 Meeting of objectives
Initially, before I had undertaken the project having the primary objective to design a
cleaning machine for cleaning the road and the floors but at the same time the machine has to be
eco-friendly consuming no energy in the form of fuel or electricity. I had successfully carried out
the project by considering all the objectives and carrying out a successful collaboration with my
team mates to get hold of successful end results to build the working prototype of the cleaning
machine.

2.4.3 Personal contribution
I had mainly acted as a contributor towards designing the entire blue print of the working
prototype of the cleaning machine. Additively, I had chosen the parts that are required to develop
the machine as well as the dimensions of each individual part that will be used for building up
the cleaning machine. Along with this, I had improvised some of the parts such as integration of
the collecting box for the garbage that is cleaned by the machine. As a reason, I had successfully
performed all the activities that I had undertaken during the entire course of the project.
