Career Research Project Report: Hospitality Industry Trends and Skills

This report, a career research project for the MG410 module, investigates the hospitality industry, focusing on the role of an assistant hotel manager. It analyzes both secondary and primary data to identify current trends, such as technological advancements and sustainability, and the skills required for success. The secondary data draws from academic journals and publications, highlighting communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills as crucial. Primary data, gathered through surveys of hospitality managers, supports these findings and explores the best methods for skill development, including training and on-the-job learning. The report concludes with an evaluation of the author's suitability for the assistant hotel manager role and a list of references and an appendix containing the questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION
After getting degree in hotel management course, I have decided to find a job in Hospitality
industry. I am looking to for role of Assistant hotel manager role in the industry. This report
highlights primary and secondary data about different trend which is prevailing in Hospitality
industry and also different skill require by individual to carryout operation of hospitality
industry.
ANALYSIS AND APPLICATION
Secondary Data
Secondary data refers to data that is collected by someone other than the user. Common sources
of secondary data for social science include censuses, information collected by different
magazines, organizational report and different journal related to topic.
As per Kim Schmidgall and Damitio, (2017) technology advancement is one of most
growing trend in hospitality industry. As almost all the organization is adopting more technology
devices in the organization, so that they are able to enhance the customer satisfaction in the
organization. As all customers always demands good amount of technological product to
enhance their experience. This trend will eventually ask the individual in building more
technical skill to carry out different operation of the business. Also it will ask the individual in
having more industry knowledge.
On the other hand Xie, (2019)Highlights that sustainability is another trend which is
prevailing in the market. All customers in the market are becoming more sensitive to different
environment as well as social issue which are prevailing in the market. This will eventually ask
the individual to build different skill related to problem solving in context of environment and
social issue this will eventually help individual in understanding customer need and preference
in better way in the firm.
In the published paper Verma and Chandra, (2016) explains that communication skill is main
skill which will be require to build career in hospitality industry. As in hospitality industry there
are many different customers who used to belong to different culture used to have their different
query. Also Author highlights that Soft skill are another skill which is require as it is very much
important for individual to have very good soft skill as with the help of same in the industry,

individual will able to pass on the effective solution to the different query which is faced by
customer belonging to different culture in the organization. Supporting above author Lee, (2016)
pass on opinion that organizational skill is another important skill which is generally demands
by hospitality industry. As it has been find out that employee in this organization has to perform
multiple duty at same time, so to carry out the same in the organization they need to possess
good organizational skill. Author also highlights that it is very much important for all individual
in Hospitality industry to have good problem solving skill as individual has to go through variety
of the issue which is faced by different employee in the organization. So that with the help
problem solving skill individual is able to solve different query of customer very efficiently for
the consumer. TO support same skill individual also need to have good listening skill as
individual will able to understand different query of customer very easily.
Lee, (2016) Highlights that knowledge about different industry trend is require by
individual to carry out different operation in hospitality industry. As trend in industry used to
change on regular basis. Another knowledge which generally needs to possess by employee is
about the target market for which different operation are carried in the organization.
Primary data
Primary data is the data collected for the very first time from the first hand sources, This
is data collection process generally perform with the help of different method surveys,
interviews, or experiments. For collecting primary data 20 manager of different hospitality has
been selected with the help of simple random sampling method.

Interpretation: After going through data collected with the help of primary data it has
been analysis that there is good sort of scope for all the individual who are looking to pursue
their career in Hospitality industry. As collected data shows that out of the total pool of 20
respondent 18 has gone with the option of Yes and only 2 respondent has gone with the option
of No in the survey.

Interpretation: Data collected with the help of primary data tool it has been summarized
that Technology advancement is one of the main trend which is growing in the market. It has
been analysed that out of the total pool of 20 respondent 14 has chosen the option of technology
advancement, 4 has gone with the option of sustainability. Remaining 1 each respondent has
gone with the option of Privatization and all of above. This is well supported by Author in
secondary data collection tool. As author highlights that technology advancement is one of the
main trend and preference which is there in all consumers in the Hospitality industry.

Interpretation: Data collected with the help of questionnaire and survey has helped in
analysing that out of the total pool of 20 respondent, all the respondent are confused in three
type of skill. As 6 respondents each has chosen the option of Communication skill and Problem
solving skill. 7 respondents has gone with the option of organizational skill and remaining 1
respondent has chosen the option of presentation skill. So it has been analysed that there is not
any one opinion of all respondent in the organization. Data collected with the help of secondary
data collection tool has also helped in analysing that communication skill and problem solving
skill are one of the main skill which is require by the individual to carry out different operation
of the business. So it can be interpreted that more than one skill is require by the individual
working in hospitality industry as there are multiple operation which are carried by one
individual in the organization.

Interpretation: Collected data with the help of primary data collection tool has helped
the individual in analysing that Training and development is one of the best way through which
individual can build variety of the skill in them to pursue their career very efficiently in
hospitality industry. This will eventually help individual in seeing more open opportunity
available in front of them to grow their professional career. This has been interpreted on the
basis of data collected that is out of total pool of 20 respondent 14 respondent has gone with the
option of training and development. 3 has gone with the option of conference, 2 has gone with
the option of On job learning and 1 has gone with the option of all of above.
Theme 5: skills are main thing which used are require to grow in hospitality industry
Interpretation: After going through the suggestion of different respondent it has been
analysed that skill are very important thing which need to be possessed by different individual
looking to operate in hospitality industry. Reason identify by different respondent is that it used
to help the different individual in understanding variety of different industry knowledge as well
as also help in building good confidence of different employee in the organization.

EVALUATION
Assistant Hotel management is the post which used to attract me in the Hospitality
industry. As different skill set which is possess by me is well suited for that type of role in the
industry. As this role generally requires a leadership, communication and problem solving skill
and I am the one who is very much confident to perform such skill very confidently in an
organization. Also, as I am have degree in hotel management I used to get attracted more toward
same in the market.
CONCLUSION
Above report conclude that there are many different type of skill which need to be
possessed by the individual to pursue their career in hospitality industry. Also report highlights
the different trends which are prevailing in hospitality industry and skill which will require to
sustain that trend in the industry very efficiently.
