Case Conceptualisation
Part 1
Case Conceptualisation Meaning
Case conceptualisation relates to how the experts perceive the essence of the clients'
concerns, how and when they create challenges and what sorts of suggestions may be useful. It
should include the context of diagnosis, medical history, history of narcotics and alcohol and
connection background (with longer focus). A professional, unbiased expert with whom one can
develop a therapeutic and trustworthy partnership is known as a counsellor, who is qualified to
provide various kinds of help; most often talking counselling types, this is included in the case
conceptualisation process.
In the current study, the meaning of case conceptualisation and its importance for the
counselling process is discussed concerning the case of Charlie. The case of Charlie is related to
the need for counselling when the house and relationship of Charlie got hampered. In this study
the case conceptualisation of Charlie’s case is done by psychosocial assessment of headspace
and 5P model to analyse the situation and make suggestions to cope with the dissatisfactions like
Charlie was facing in his life (Headspace, 2020). It identified and suggested interactions between
the psychological mechanisms and other influences that induce and sustain the symptoms and
concerns of a particular patient to cope up with the situation.
Importance in Counselling
Professional therapy can affect the lives of individuals, families, and communities deeply.
The case conceptualisation process allows people to manage difficult situations, such as a loved
one's death, breakup, natural disaster, academic depression and job loss in an effective manner.
Conceptualise; one can see the concept of the word is that it is implying a thought instead of a
simple idea, though, like a stroll. Case conceptualization is a phenomenon where a complex
concept with many components is analysed so it takes a little brain work. It is important in
Charlie’s case as it can be formulating and interpreting the issues within the common context of
Charlie’s life. The purpose of the case conceptualisation services is to help customers accomplish
their objectives and develop a deeper view of their lives by resolving their issues. It is done with
the help of counselling process.

Case Conceptualisation
The purpose of consulting is to allow the individual to determine objectively on
alternative action without external influence. Advice should help people get facts and explain
personal issues that may conflict with or have a link with the decisions taken. Case
conceptualisation in the process of counselling can help in creating a mental image or forming a
concept or a hypothesis, the clinician can consider the concerns of the Charlie’s case by
objectively, as seen through a specific analytical approach; as described by the Charlie’s
biological, psychological and social contexts in the given information. The issues faced by
Charlie like discouragement in life, breakage of the relationship, etc can be handled effectively
by the process of conceptualisation of the case which can cut through and converts concepts
through science into specific definitions to create a user friendlily agreement. In upcoming lines,
the case of Charlie is discussed by the psychosocial assessment of Headspace organization and
applying the 5P model of case conceptualisation to interpret the results in an effective manner
(Headspace Foundation, 2019).
Part 2
Development of Model for Case Conceptualisation
a) Presenting Problem: In the case of Charlie, the impact of burning of house and breaking
of Charlie’s relationship with his partner can be presented in front of the counsellor by
psychosocial assessment of headspace. The initial signs, symptoms and the difficulties
faced by Charlie like constant drinking, depression, etc are discussed with the expert to
get things started and resolved soon.
b) Predisposing Factors: The next step is to determine the previous illness or disorders that
might be faced by the patient in his or her past life. In the case of Charlie, the depression
felt by him from the last few years shows the sign of irregular lifestyle and dissatisfaction
in him. Hence this can help the counsellor in the productive conceptualisation of his case
(Dryden, 2019).
c) Precipitating Factors: In this step that precipitating factors in the life of the patient are
identified and analysed to understand the situation. In the case of Charlie, the
precipitating factors are the burning of their house, long-distance relationship for two
weeks, the steps taken by Tom for ending the relationship with Charlie and some

miscellaneous encounters of Charlie with his life that increased sense of more non-
encouragement in him has led to depression and current circumstances.
d) Perpetuating Factors: The next step is to understand the in-depth influence of
precipitating factors in the current physical and mental state of the patient by
psychosocial assessment of headspace. Hence in this section, the influence of prevailing
conditions of the day to day life of Charlie is determined by the counsellor. In this
manner, the case conceptualization process can be carried on effectively.
e) Protective Factors: In this process, the emphasis is laid on influencing the strength and
mental state of the patient by psychosocial assessment of headspace. The relationship of
Charlie with Tom can be counselled where both of them can take part, Charlie can be
motivated to make more friends and get a secure job, etc. In this manner, these 5P’s can
help in the case conceptualisation process of Charlie (Simms, 2017).

Case Conceptualisation
case conceptualisation of Charlie’s case has been done by psychosocial assessment of headspace
and using the 5P model of case conceptualisation (Pelling & Burton, 2017). The strength of
reviewing and counselling about information by creating ideas, solving issues, arguing and
determining the factors in the form of an idea, an image, a sound, or even an emotional feeling
that might be encountered by Charlie in his day to day life.
The limitation in the case conceptualization of the current study is the identification of
minor and in-depth issues faced by Charlie to explain triggers and establish reasons that can
direct the behaviour of Charlie. There is another limitation is that human nature is restrictive
which restricts the patient’s to explain themselves in front of the counsellors so that their
problems cannot become public. This case conceptualisation process in the study help the
researcher in gaining insights into the process and the limitations that might be faced by the
counsellor in the process (Galbraith, 2017). The results and analysis in this study can help future
counsellors in conceptualisation of the cases that they come across in their future life or career.
