1THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL IMPACTS OF CASINO RESORTS
Introduction
Tourism as an industry has gained rapid importance in the contemporary world. In order
to attract the tourists so that higher foreign revenues may be earned, the hotels have undertaken
various measures (Barsky & Maier, 2015). One such measure is the establishment of casino
resorts. Genting Highland Malaysia is a world premier casino resort situated in Malaysia. This
paper seeks to discuss about the economic impacts and social impacts that a casino resort has on
a society. Both the positive and the negative impacts of each aspect has been considered and a
few recommendations has been given to counteract the negative aspects. For the purposes of this
paper, an organization has been selected based in Singapore, known as the Genting Highland
Malaysia. The paper concludes on how the activities of the casino resorts affect the society at
large.
Genting Highland Resort is located on the peak of Mount Ulu Kali in Malaysia ("Genting
Highlands", 2018). The resort has many attractions for the travellers such as casinos, shopping
malls, horse ranches, cave temples, entertainment parks and mesmerizing hotel suites. The casino
of this resort is renowned and spending time here is a favourite activity of many customers.
Definition of Casino Resorts
Casino Resorts is one of the most enchanting initiatives of the hotels of the world. The
main aim of the hotels is to generate higher revenue earnings and for this purpose the hotels
continually innovate themselves to attract more travellers. A casino resort refers to a hotel which
has a variety of other entertaining features such as an entertainment theme park, horse ranches,
and most importantly, a casino (Io, 2016). The hotel resorts have gone one-step further to
decorate the casinos based on a theme, usually, along the looks of a tropical island or Las Vegas.
These places symbolize a peaceful and fun retreat and hence, the hotels try to portray to their
clients that no matter the location of the hotel, the clients can enjoy themselves within their
favourite surroundings (Horner & Swarbrooke, 2016).
