Introduction
According to the Eurominitor’s report, Hong Kong is the highly visited city across the world.
Indeed, the Eurominitor researchers conduct a global analysis determining the arrivals that spend
more than 24 hours, who stays less than a year in more than 400 cities across the world. The
visitors including those people traveling for business trip and vacations with a family or friends.
However the researcher’s analysis excludes those people who travel abroad for further education,
employment, militaries, refugees, transportation team and the cruisers. In the 2019 report, Hong
Kong is ranked by estimating the visitors data based on the few months of the year Lau at al.
(2019). However few critiques have affected the tourism industry in the city. Therefore this study
analyses critical challenges facing the tourism industry in Hong Kong and the approach towards
the amendments.
Background
In June 2019, an extradition bill was proposed in Hong Kong whereby, many were against the
bill and protested against it. Due to the misunderstandings, the tourist attraction of the city was
affected and it reduced the productivity of the industry. Indeed, the numbers of the protestors
increased thus turned to civil insubordination and revolutionary actions including distracting
airport operations, public transport and causing extensive strikes. Consequently due to the
mushrooming violence, the international media houses re- announced Hong Kong as a hazardous
city and thus visitors from other countries ought to be cautious and seek travel advisories. In
addition, Hong Kong was also stated as the dangerous city and thus not safe for visits.

In hong kong tourism is recognized as an economic pillar. However, the protests affected the
economic sector which led to a drop of arrivals in the city. Despite the rapid growth of arrivals
in june 2019, the tourism board of Hong Kong releases the latest figures from July 2019,
showing a drop of arrivals by 4.8% compared to the last year’s record. Although, from January
to July the city has recorded 11.1% increased growth of the arrivals.
Indeed the number of arrivals decreased as the year goes by; thus in August 2019 the arrivals
reduced by 40% comparing to the last year’s figures. Surprisingly people make early
arrangements while traveling, however the drastic events have affect the optimal bookings of the
destination. Therefore the city is hoping that the arrivals will increase before the year ends;
certainly it is not possible even when the protest ceases. Besides, the revenue sales in the hotel
rooms in the city have reduced by 50 % and still the hotels have reduced in the occupancy.
Additionally, the retail sectors for shopping by tourist who are the target have also been affected
by the situation.
Mainland china is the target market for tourist in Hong Kong Pang et al. (2019 p.1-24).
Therefore, over the past five years, approximately, 80 % of visitors were from the mainland
china Su et al. (2019 p.1-17). Besides from January to July around 32millions of visitors from
mainland visited Hong Kong at least four times compared to other countries. Besides, the
mainland visitors are known for spending more capital in Hong Kong compared to other
countries that visits the city whereby, the data shows that in the year 2018 every over night
visitor from mainland china spends a quarter more money than any other visitor other countries.
Additionally, the mainland visitor spends three times more money compared from other visitors
from different countries.

Therefore, considering that Mainland is bringing more profits to Hong Kong, the city is forced to
fight back and protect the image and reputation of the destination. Thus, Mainland authorities
and the media have paralyzed the protest with all the power and they also suggested that the
super powers foreigners are the major threat to the national security. Additionally, the mainland
and the media conducted a company of discouraging the information shared via the social media
plat forms.
However, according to the researchers, the china is still warned against the visits to Hong Kong
via the social media platforms despite the censorship. Therefore, it has become difficult for Hong
Kong to convince the mainland residents to visit their city since the protest shows that the

destination is not safe for travelling. Indeed, the business persons who target the mainland have
been affected by the protest and the tourism industry as well.
Additionally, the Hong Kong residents are more careful while visiting mainland china whereby,
the world tourism organization figures shows that 52 % of the Hong Kong visitors to mainland
are questioned against the protest and their phones are investigated to check if they have texts
and photographs that appear to support the protest. Thus, both the visitors of Hong Kong to china
and mainland to Hong Kong are affected by the protests. Besides, the Hong Kong city is
expecting the high number of international visitors but it is unpredictable since it relays much on
the final results of the protests.
Nelsen (2019) the People’s Liberations Army (PLA) was expected to crush the protest and the
Beijing central government to end the condition in Hong Kong though, there is a challenge since
the Hong Kong city will lose the international stand and the global companies will be transferred
to another city. The residents of the Hong Kong city are expecting that the war will end soon and
thus continue with their normal businesses. Possibly the Hong Kong government may also seek
for a political solution that is favorable to the residents.
Political crises affect the economy in many countries as the Panel data from111 countries
describes whereby, nations are announced as insecure places to visit and yet they have not
grown to an international brand. Thus Hong Kong is one of the developed destinations and the
possibility of regaining their arrivals levels is high and quickly within a period of uncertainty.

Economic has negatively affected the tourism sector in Hong Kong though, economic
sustainability has been less considered in many cases. Therefore, the Hong Kong city has
conducted analysis to develop and approve a framework for estimating economic sustainability
from the prospect of the local stakeholders. During the analysis the tourism sector interviewed
12 stakeholders and they also conducted telephone survey. Indeed three measurements were used
in determining the economic sustainability they included; economic positivity, development
control and individual welfare. Thereby, the results show the reliability and the validity of the
measurements and later they are detected by data of subsamples. Besides during the analysis
various characteristic such as social demographic are evaluated to determine their attitude
towards the tourism economic sustainability Qiu et al. (2019 p.226-248). Besides, the analysis
increases the understanding of tourism sustainability by widening from the global level to the
local level.
Economic sustainability tourism in Hong Kong
Among the Asians cities, Hong Kong is recognized as the crowded city but it also leads in
cleanliness. However the city is also affected by the environmental pollutions including; the air
pollution, fueled industries from mainland china and the vehicle traffic. Besides, according to the
research the pollution worsens and it therefore affects the weather predictions.
Despite the drastic environmental issues, the city try to improve inbeing economical thus reduce
the global challenges. Therefore, Hong Kong strategizes on using a nonstop flight since less fuel
will be consumed compared to the indirect flights that keeps on stopping by and then takes off.
Additionally the destination plans their trips during the day whereby, according to the science
research, during the night, the flights are more harmful to the environment. Additionally, the
tourism sectors at Hong Kong advices the visitors to carry a light luggage to emit the carbon
dioxide.
In hong Kong public transport is more efficient and convenient compared to taxi Thereby the
buses, ferries, and trains are the preferred means of transport. Although, taking a walk is also
healthy thus stay more fit and healthy and reduce the zero emissions.

Indeed, where the visitors stay during the travels can have the environmental influence.
Therefore, the visitors ought to ask for the green credentials of the property whereby be be
informed about the water conservation, recycling and the bins and the consumption of energy.
Additionally, the visitors are also free to ask the sustainability of the materials used in the
construction of the property. Amazingly, many hotels in Hong Kong are environmental aware
and thus they are more efficient and environmental friendly. Thus, they are designed with hybrid
fuel system tor instant showers that have low temperature within the hotel. Besides, the Hong
Kong hotels employ the environmental managers who are responsible enough to observe the
environmental and the social performances. Trang, et al (2019 p.14-28) the hotels have the green
house team that recycles anything that can be recycled and the team also serves the community
whereby they make mats using the old table clothes from the restaurant. Furthermore, the
visitors may be economical by turning the air conditioner while living the rooms and change the
towels and the bed sheets after two days.
Indeed, the local restaurants in Hong Kong uses the produce grown from within such as paosto
pubblico whereby, dining from these restaurants reduces the economy and greenhouse gas
emissions. Additionally, promoting the local restaurants whose food not transported in long
distances. Besides in Hong Kong some hotels offer the leftover food donations to the food
pantries. Interestingly, visitors are advised to carry with them a shopping bag while shopping at
the supermarkets, malls convincement stalls and beauty shops to avoid the extra cost of the
plastic bags thus save the little cash.
while in vacations, there include a certain visitors who are interested in exploring more by
experience different cultures, learning different languages, interacting with different kinds of
people from the city and thus enjoy the vacation to the maximum. Therefore, the Hong kong
tourism department offer the volunteer opportunities which could be long term or short term
through the Hong Kong YWCA website. Additionally the website also offers courses and
various classes including; cooking, mandarin and Cantonese which is open to everyone
interested.

Thus, sustainability in tourism is more of conserving the environment and respecting the
communities within the city Kwan, Kong, and Liu, (2019 p.101). Therefore being more ethical in
tourism, Hong Kong is the preferred city at the Tai O village on Lantau Island.
Conclusion
Essentially, Hong Kong is globally known and it has incredible transportation and infrastructure
whereby, the city is also unique with multiple tourist attraction and furthermore loaded with
highly skilled industries. Thus, the tourism sector can recover quickly despite the harsh condition
in the city
It is unfortunate that the reputation of the Hong Kong global city has been ruined though not
polished. Thus, mangers ought to strategize, plan and team up with the stakeholders and improve
the tourism sector of the destination. Thereby, get rid of the losses made during the protest and
focus on the sustainability and the optimization of the tourism department. Additionally become
more responsible environmental conscious for the well being of the Hong Kong residents.
Indeed, Hong Kong as in international city is going through under difficult and hard times.
However the residents and the businesses in the city are strong enough to develop the
sustainability. Furthermore, Hong Kong is known as an exciting city that that accommodate
different persons with different cultures and personalities. Therefore, despite the protest and the
negative image of the city, the destination is open and honored to welcome the visitors over.
The tourism board in Hong is concerned about the future of the sector thus, they have introduced
a new executive director known as Dane Cheng who is willing to lead and control the challenges.
Additionally team up with the trade partners and maintain the city as the preferred tour
destination.
